OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to synthesize English and Spanish literature to determine whether electronic health interventions (EHIs) such as telehealth, telemedicine, digital health, and mobile health (mHealth) improve A1C, blood glucose, BMI, and/or weight among Hispanic/Latino adults with type 2 diabetes or overweight/obesity in the Americas. DESIGN AND METHODS: Searches were conducted in June 2021 using the Scientific Electronic Library Online, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PubMed, and PsycInfo literature databases...

Community involvement in research is key to translating science into practice, and new approaches to engaging community members in research design and implementation are needed. The Community Scientist Program, established at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston in 2018 and expanded to two other Texas institutions in 2021, provides researchers with rapid feedback from community members on study feasibility and design, cultural appropriateness, participant recruitment, and research implementation. This paper aims to describe the Community Scientist Program and assess Community Scientists' and researchers' satisfaction with the program...

The study of terroir, increasingly popular in scientific circles, remains a challenging field, particularly in terms of sensory analysis. This paper summarizes our own contribution to the field-an approach for tracing the typicity of wines by sensometrics, using the Malbec variety as a case study. This large-scale research fingerprinted 81 wines from 29 parcels from highly contrasting environments (varying climate, elevation, and soils), produced under standardized conditions in three consecutive vintages. Wines were evaluated through descriptive sensory analysis (DA) by a trained panel, and sensory descriptors were associated with different size geographic scales (zones, departments, and Geographic Indications (GIs))...

Single-center prospective cohort diagnostic accuracy study. Our study aimed to evaluate the accuracy and reproducibility of Thoracic Ultrasound (TUS) in detecting pulmonary pathology in immunosuppressed patients. We conducted a single-center prospective study. Consecutive patients with febrile neutropenia who underwent CT (Computerized Tomography) underwent TUS evaluation within 24h of CT. Both studies were performed by an expert who was blinded to the clinical information and results of the alternative imaging modalities...

Antimony, extensively used in energy applications, poses toxicity and contamination concerns, especially in anaerobic environments where its impact on microbial activity is poorly understood. Emerging remedies, like biochar, show promise in soil and water treatment. This study investigates biochar's influence on methanogenic activity under Sb(V) and Sb(III) stress using anaerobic sludge as inoculum and lactate as the carbon source. Sb(III) and Sb(V) were introduced at varied concentrations (5-80 mg/L), with or without biochar, monitoring changes in biogas production, pH, Sb, and lactate levels over time...

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has influenced the approach to the health-disease system, raising the question about the principles of bioethics present in physician-patient relations. The principles while widely accepted may not be sufficient for a comprehensive ethical analysis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the perception of these principles and the physician-patient relationship during a hospital stay through a qualitative approach. METHOD: Sixteen semi-structured interviews took place to know the patients' perception during their 2020 hospitalization for COVID-19...

OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence rates (IRs) of catastrophic injuries and exertional medical events in lacrosse athletes. METHODS: Catastrophic injuries and exertional medical events in lacrosse in the US among youth or amateur, high school and college athletes were analysed from the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research (NCCSIR) database from 1982/83 to 2019/20. Frequencies, IRs per 100,000 athlete-seasons (AS) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs), and incidence rate ratios (IRRs) with 95% CIs were calculated...

Volumetric Additive Manufacturing (VAM) represents a revolutionary advancement in the field of Additive Manufacturing, as it allows for the creation of objects in a single, cohesive process, rather than in a layer-by-layer approach. This innovative technique offers unparalleled design freedom and significantly reduces printing times. A current limitation of VAM is the availability of suitable resins with the required photoreactive chemistry and from sustainable sources. To support the application of this technology, we have developed a sustainable resin based on polyglycerol, a bioderived ( e...

BACKGROUND: Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by hyperphosphorylated tau (p-tau) accumulation. The clinical features associated with CTE pathology are unclear. In brain donors with autopsy-confirmed CTE, we investigated the association of CTE p-tau pathology density and location with cognitive, functional, and neuropsychiatric symptoms. METHODS: In 364 brain donors with autopsy confirmed CTE, semi-quantitative p-tau severity (range: 0-3) was assessed in 10 cortical and subcortical regions...

In this article, we present results from a literature review of intrinsic, instrumental, and relational values of nature conducted for the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, as part of the Methodological Assessment of the Diverse Values and Valuations of Nature . We identify the most frequently recurring meanings in the heterogeneous use of different value types and their association with worldviews and other key concepts. From frequent uses, we determine a core meaning for each value type, which is sufficiently inclusive to serve as an umbrella over different understandings in the literature and specific enough to help highlight its difference from the other types of values...

The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound global impact, characterized by a high fatality rate and the emergence of enduring consequences known as Long COVID. Our study sought to determine the prevalence of Long COVID syndrome within a population of Northeastern Mexico, correlating it with patients' comorbidities, number of COVID-19 reinfection, and vaccination status. Employing an observational cross-sectional approach, we administered a comprehensive questionnaire covering medical history, demographics, vaccination status, COVID-related symptoms, and treatment...

BACKGROUND: Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) is a serious neurological disorder that is underdiagnosed. This case report highlights a patient who had persistent fevers for weeks and rapidly progressing pericardial effusion following a positive test for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) two weeks before presentation to the hospital. The initial thought was that her fever was of infectious etiology, but relevant investigations led to the diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). AML, which is characterized by clonal expansion of immature "blast cells" in the peripheral blood and bone marrow resulting in ineffective erythropoiesis and bone marrow failure, is the most prevalent form of leukemia...

Guidance on indications for, and types of, feeding tubes recommended in Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is needed. A Global PWS Registry survey was developed to investigate nasogastric (NG) and gastrostomy (G) tube use and associated complications. Of 346 participants, 242 (69.9%) had NG-tubes, 17 (4.9%) had G-tubes, and 87 (25.1%) had both NG- and G-tubes. Primary indication for placement was "feeding difficulties and/or poor weight gain" for both NG- (90.2%) and G-tubes (71.2%), while "aspiration/breathing difficulties" was the procedural indication for 6...
