PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the value of MR sialography in diagnosis of Sjoigren's syndrome in parotid gland. METHODS: MRI and MRS were used to diagnose Sjoigren's symdrome and differentiate with other disease combined with clinical, serologic and histopathologic result. Meanwhile, the result of MRS was compared with sialograph. RESULTS: 25 cases were ultimately diagnosed as Sjoigren's syndrome among 32 cases by clinical, serologic, histopathologic and sialography or MRS method...

Mutations at exon 12 of the nucleophosmin (NPM1) gene are the most frequent acquired molecular abnormalities in adult and pediatric acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) with normal karyotype. We screened 28 patients with new diagnosed primary AML with normal karyotype, 38 patients with myelodysplastic symdromes (MDS) and 19 healthy volunteer for mutations at exon 12 of NPM1 gene. NPM1 mutations were identified in four AML patients and two MDS patients, including one novel sequence variant. As far as we know, this is the first report of NPM1 mutation in patients with MDS in the English literature until now, and our primary data support that NPM1 mutations may be also involved in the pathogenesis of MDS...

BACKGROUND: We report a case of invasive sinus aspergillosis that extended to the orbital cavity and cavernous sinus and was improved by treatment with micafungin and itraconazole. CASE REPORT: A 83-year-old woman was referred to our hospital because of headache and impaired of eye movement on the right side. Physical examination revealed impaired function of cranial nerves, II, II, IV, and VI on the right side. MRI showed evidence of inflammation of the right sphenoid sinus and ethmoidal sinus and an enhancing mass in the right cavernous sinus and orbit...

Endothelial factor VIII staining in renal microcirculation was performed in eight nephrotic patients associated with mesangial proliferation (MesP) and six nephrotic patients associated with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). The result in MesP revealed a greater staining for glomerular endothelial factor VIII (35 +/- 15%) and for postglomerular capillary endothelial factor VIII (65 +/- 21%) than that observed in FSGS, which revealed a 11 +/- 8% staining for glomerular endothelial factor VIII and 19 +/- 15% staining for postglomerular capillary endothelial factor VIII...

The pharmacoeconomics of the low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) enoxaparin in the prophylaxis and treatment of venous thromboembolism have mostly been investigated in cost-effectiveness studies that estimated direct costs associated with treatment, using decision analyses and clinical outcome data from randomised controlled trials. These studies have shown enoxaparin to be cost effective compared with unfractionated heparin (UFH) and warfarin in short-term thromboprophylaxis for hospital inpatients undergoing orthopaedic surgery and in thromboprophylaxis following trauma...

The antiphospholipid syndrome has been associated with many clinical conditions since its description by GRV Hughes in 1983. The linkage to Type 1 diabetes mellitus has not been established. There have been no reports of deep venous thrombosis in association with antiphospholipid syndrome and diabetes mellitus. We present the case of an African-American teenager with multiple miscarriages, diabetic ketoacidosis, deep venous thromboses, and elevated immunoglobulin M and G anticardiolipin antibodies. We urge that clinicians consider testing for antiphospholipid antibodies when diabetic patients present with multiple miscarriages or deep venous thrombosis...

71 patients of obstructive sleep apnea symdrome (OSAS) were treated by Nd:YAG laser assisted uvulopalptoplasty (LAUP). According to the atonamic features of every patient, and type of operation which should be selected, the success rate of surgery would increase, and complications would be reduced. The effect rate is 97.2% by clinic, 90.0% by polysimnograph (PSG).

Four patients with infiltrative orbital disease involving an extraocular muscle demonstrated a characteristic retraction-motility pattern. The cardinal feature was retraction of the globe on attempted gaze opposite the field of action of the involved muscle. Variable eye movement limitation was present in the field of action and opposite to the field of action of the involved muscle. When motility was restricted, the force-duction test was positive. Modest proptosis and episcleal vascular congestion over the extraocular muscle insertion were associted physical findings...

A 51-year-old female presented herself with complaints of mis-swallowing, hoarseness, speech disturbance and right stiff shoulder of 3 months duration. She had left breast cancer operated on elsewhere 10 years previously. Pertinent neurological findings were 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th cranial nerve palsies on the right (the Collet-Sicard syndrome). Cerebral angiography, retrograde jugular venography, polytomography of the skull base and bone scintigraphy with 99mTc-MDP raised a question of metastasis of the breast cancer to the skull base of the right mastoid region...

Coagulation is explored in 129 children infected by dengue virus and presenting either banal symptoms, or an hemorrhagic fever. Results are given, and commented according to the disease's clinical staging. A disseminated intravascular coagulation symdrome is brought out in all the cases, but with less or more intensity, though it belongs to dengue virus infection. Etio-pathogenic mechanism is then discussed.

Autoimmunity to salivary duct cells has been suggested in Sjögren's symdrome (SjS). We were interested in the secretory component (SC) of secretory IgA (s-IgA) as a common duct cell antigen of systemic exocrine glands because of the possible analogy between SC in SjS and thyroglobulin in Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Therefore, we isolated s-IgA as a source of SC from human milk and investigated lymphocyte responses to s-IgA in patients with SjS. Higher mitogenic indices against s-IgA were demonstrated in SjS than in rheumatoid arthritis, other autoimmune diseases and normal persons...

A pair of monzygotic twins with the Marfan syndrome with variable expression is presented. One of the twins, in addition to more severe musculoskeletal and ocular manifestations, had coarctation of the aorta as the cardiovascular manifestation of this symdrome. Analysis of red cell antigens, serum proteins and dermatoglyphic examination suggests a high probability of monozygosity. Accordingly, the variation in expression of this autosomal dominant disorder between the twins is most likely due to the modifying influences of environmental factors...
