BACKGROUND: The anatomy of myocardial fibers around the right cardiac veins (RCVs) and their roles in accessory pathways (APs) are rarely reported. METHODS: Six RCV-APs were identified from 566 patients with right-sided APs. Mapping of retrograde atrial activation was performed using CARTO 3 system under orthodromic tachycardia or right ventricular pacing. Venography of RCVs was acquired at the earliest retrograde atrial activation. RESULTS: Patients enrolled had a median age of 30 (11-51) years, 5 of them were male...

Compared to an incisional skin or mucosal wound, a tooth extraction wound results in far more soft tissue loss. A blood clot instantly fills the gap left by the extracted tooth. An embryonic type of bone forms during the healing of extraction wounds, and mature bone only later replaces it. Osteocytes in embryonic bone, also known as coarse fibrillar bone or immature bone, differ from those in adult bone in terms of number, size, and irregular arrangement. This immature bone is more radiolucent than mature bone due to the higher cell density and the smaller volume of calcified intercellular material...

PURPOSE: Proximity to critical neurovascular structures can create significant obstacles during surgical resection of foramen magnum meningiomas (FMMs) to the detriment of treatment outcomes. We propose a new classification that defines the tumor's relationship to neurovascular structures and assess correlation with postoperative outcomes. METHODS: In this retrospective review, 41 consecutive patients underwent primary resection of FMMs through a far lateral approach...

Posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) aneurysms account for 0.3% of all intracranial aneurysms, and they commonly present with a complex fusiform morphology that necessitates unique bypass strategies.1-5 An adolescent boy with a familial predisposition to aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage was identified as harboring a fusiform aneurysm of the right distal PICA, characterized by 2 outflow branches. Our recommended treatment strategy involved a right far lateral craniotomy, followed by P1 PICA reanastomosis and P2 PICA reimplantation...

The topology of the transcription factor network (TFN) of Escherichia coli is far from uniform, with 22 global regulator (GR) proteins controlling one-third of all genes. So far, their production rates cannot be tracked by comparable fluorescent proteins. We developed a library of fluorescent reporters for 16 GRs for this purpose. Each consists of a single-copy plasmid coding for green fluorescent protein (GFP) fused to the full-length copy of the native promoter. We tracked their activity in exponential and stationary growth, as well as under weak and strong stresses...

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether using ultrasound (US) in addition to clinical information versus only clinical information in a treat-to-target (T2T) strategy leads to more clinical remission and to less radiographic progression in RA. METHODS: Patients with RA from the 2-year prospective BIODAM cohort were included. Clinical and US data (US7-score) were collected every 3 months and hands and feet radiographs every 6 months. At each visit, it was decided whether patients were treated according to the clinical definition of T2T with DAS44 remission as benchmark (T2T-DAS44)...

BACKGROUND: The principle of joint reconstruction surgery is to try to recreate the native joint biomechanics and stability. With respect to acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) surgery, much focus to date has been on restoring the superoinferior stability. There is concern that persistent horizontal instability following ACJ reconstruction could lead to poorer patient outcomes; therefore, we evaluated whether acromioclavicular (AC) ligament repair offers improved horizontal stability in conjunction with ACJ reconstruction...

Schooling is a collective behavior that relies on a fish's ability to sense and respond to the other fish around it. Previous work has identified "rules" of schooling - attraction to neighbors that are far away, repulsion from neighbors that are too close, and alignment with neighbors at the correct distance - but we do not understand well how these rules emerge from the sensory physiology and behavior of individual fish. In particular, fish use both vision and their lateral lines to sense each other, but it is unclear how much they rely on information from these sensory modalities to coordinate schooling behavior...

Archaeological evidence supports sporadic seafaring visits to the Eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus by Epipaleolithic hunter-gatherers over 12,000 years ago, followed by permanent settlements during the early Neolithic. The geographical origins of these early seafarers have so far remained elusive. By systematically analysing all available genomes from the late Pleistocene to early Holocene Near East (c. 14,000-7000 cal BCE), we provide a comprehensive overview of the genetic landscape of the early Neolithic Fertile Crescent and Anatolia and infer the likely origins of three recently published genomes from Kissonerga-Mylouthkia (Cypriot Late Pre-Pottery Neolithic B, c...

RATIONALE: Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is a rare, highly malignant form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma categorized under the diffuse large B-cell type. It accounts for merely 1% of all non-Hodgkin lymphoma cases and comprises approximately 3% of all brain tumors. The involvement of the cerebellum is observed in only 9% of these cases. Recently, we came across an unusual instance: a young man presenting with multiple lesions located specifically within the cerebellum. We present the description of a new species of Solifugae from the Iberian Peninsula, Gluvia brunnea sp. nov., which has been found so far in southeast Spain. The morphological description is accompanied by molecular and multiple factor analyses, jointly giving full support to the specific status of the taxon. Finally, we discuss the intraspecific variability of both species, G. dorsalis and G. brunnea sp. nov., and the recent history of the genus. We also discuss the usefulness of multiple factor analysis for quantitatively separating species, and we stress that some specimens of this new species were found in Mesovoid Shallow Substratum stations, representing the very first time that Solifugae have been captured in this type of trap...

In animal models of LGI1-dependent autosomal dominant lateral temporal lobe epilepsy, Kv1 channels are downregulated, suggesting their crucial involvement in epileptogenesis. The molecular basis of Kv1 channel-downregulation in LGI1 knock-out mice has not been elucidated and how the absence of this extracellular protein induces an important modification in the expression of Kv1 remains unknown. In this study we analyse by immunofluorescence the modifications in neuronal Kv1.1 and Kv1.2 distribution throughout the hippocampal formation of LGI1 knock-out mice...

Both water management measures like damming and changes in precipitation as a result of anthropogenic induced climate change have exerted profound effects on the dynamics of streamwater-groundwater interaction (SGI). However, their compound effects on SGI have not been investigated so far. Taking the Fen River of China as an example, this study aims to examine the synergistic impacts of damming and precipitation anomalies on SGI dynamics. The sampling considered the seasonal and interannual variability of precipitation (May and September in 2019 representing a dry year; May and August in 2021 representing a wet year), and long-term daily observational data, including water levels and water discharge were combined to elucidate the compound effects...

The origin of paired appendages became one of the most important adaptations of vertebrates, allowing them to lead active lifestyles and explore a wide range of ecological niches. The basic form of paired appendages in evolution is the fins of fishes. The problem of paired appendages has attracted the attention of researchers for more than 150 years. During this time, a number of theories have been proposed, mainly based on morphological data, two of which, the Balfour-Thacher-Mivart lateral fold theory and Gegenbaur's gill arch theory, have not lost their relevance...

Knowledge of human body composition at the dawn of the twentieth century was based largely on cadaver studies and chemical analyses of isolated organs and tissues. Matters soon changed by the nineteen twenties when the Czech anthropologist Jindřich Matiegka introduced an influential new anthropometric method of fractionating body mass into subcutaneous adipose tissue and other major body components. Today, one century later, investigators can not only quantify every major body component in vivo at the atomic, molecular, cellular, tissue-organ, and whole-body organizational levels, but go far beyond to organ and tissue-specific composition and metabolite estimates...
