Citrullination is an emerging post-translational modification catalyzed by peptidyl-arginine deiminases (PADs) that convert peptidyl-arginine into peptidyl-citrulline. In humans, the PAD family consists of five isozymes (PADs 1-4, 6) involved in multiple diseases, including cancer. Given that high-risk (hr) human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are the etiological agents of cervical cancer, in this study, we sought to determine whether PAD-mediated protein citrullination would play a functional role in the HPV-driven transformation of epithelial cells...

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is a common malignancy arising in the parotid gland. The diagnosis of MEC is typically based on its morphological features alone, characteristically containing mucocytes, intermediate cells and epidermoid cells. However, when cystic degeneration is diffuse, it is challenging to distinguish MEC from other benign cystic tumors. This is a case report of a 58-year-old Caucasian man who presented with a parotid mass. H&E sections of the mass reveal multiloculated cysts lined by bland-looking epithelium with only rare papillary architectures...

Intracranial epidermoid cysts, also referred to as intracranial primary cholesteatomas, are uncommon, benign tumors characterized by slow, linear growth patterns akin to normal epidermal tissue. They typically become symptomatic around age 43, with a slight female predominance, and are most frequently located in the cerebellopontine angle. This summary presents the case of a 62-year-old woman suffering from paroxysmal excruciating pain of the right hemiface, indicative of trigeminal neuralgia, linked to an intracranial epidermoid cyst in the cerebellopontine angle...

Mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MECas) are malignant epithelial salivary gland neoplasms composed of a variable mixture of epidermoid and mucus-secreting cells arising from the ductal epithelium. Of all salivary gland tumors, MECas are the most common malignant lesions of the parotid gland. This case report aims to present a 14-year-old female patient with a history of progressive enlargement of a 3 cm in diameter, painless, mobile mass located at the parotid gland without facial nerve dysfunction. The lesion was exhaustively studied preoperatively, and studies were carried out...

Dentigerous cysts are the second most common developmental odontogenic cysts that develop around the crown of unerrupted teeth with the maxillary canine region being one of the common sites of occurrence. The cystic lining of this lesion has been shown to develop into ameloblastoma, Muco epidermoid carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinomas. However, the development of cholesterol granuloma (CG) in the cystic lining of a dentigerous cyst is extremely rare. CG is a histological observation distinguished by the presence of a conglomeration of connective tissue and granulation tissue...

Cystic lesions in the preauricular may have various histological origins, ranging from the skin to the acinar and non-acinar lesions from the parotid. Though advanced radiological investigations provide a good insight into the diagnosis of these lesions, diagnostic dilemmas may still prevail and warrant good clinical and surgical acumen to provide optimal treatment. The aim of the current report is to describe a case of an epidermoid cyst that mimicked a parotid cyst and discuss in detail the probable differential diagnosis and their management strategies...

BACKGROUND: Intracranial epidermoid cysts are rare, benign tumors. Nevertheless, the microsurgical removal of these cysts is challenging. This is due to their capacity to adhere to the neuro-vascular tissue as well as the associated difficulties in micro-surgically peeling off their capsular wall hidden in dead angles. To better understand the rate of recurrence after surgical intervention, we have performed pre- and postoperative volumetric analysis of epidermoid cysts allowing the estimation of their growth rate after resection...

Epidermoid cysts are benign lesions most commonly found in the skin but which can arise in many other locations including, very rarely the salivary glands. This rarity often leaves them off standard differential lists and can create a diagnostic dilemma. A patient with an incidentally detected parotid mass on MRI underwent core biopsy, which was unfortunately complicated by formation of a pseudoaneurysm and persistent arterial bleeding requiring coil embolisation. The histology showed only keratinous material and, in retrospect, the signal characteristics of the mass were entirely typical of an epidermoid cyst...

Splenic cysts are uncommon and are classified as primary cysts or secondary cysts based on the presence or absence of an intact epithelial lining, respectively. Epidermoid cysts have an epithelial lining of stratified squamous epithelium and have been reported in normal and intra-pancreatic accessory spleens. An 18-year-old girl presented with a symptomatic, uncomplicated splenic cyst causing massive splenomegaly and symptoms due to mass effect. Peripheral cytopaenias and lymphoproliferative neoplasm were excluded...

BACKGROUND: Management of interhemispheric pathologies requires surgical intervention through a restricted anatomical corridor ensconced within critical cerebral structures. The use of retractors to facilitate operative access may cause damage to cerebral tissue. The development of an innovative retraction technique designed to alleviate cerebral damage in such cases is imperative. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we present a novel and gentle retraction method to facilitate the interhemispheric approach...

Anticancer drugs induce apoptotic and non-apoptotic cell death in various cancer types. The signaling pathways for anticancer drug-induced apoptotic cell death have been shown to differ between drug-sensitive and drug-resistant cells. In atypical multidrug-resistant leukemia cells, the c-Jun /activator protein 1 (AP-1)/ p53 signaling pathway leading to apoptotic death is altered. Cancer cells treated with anticancer drugs undergo c-Jun /AP-1-mediated apoptotic death and are involved in c-Jun N-terminal kinase activation and growth arrest- and DNA damage-inducible gene 153 ( Gadd153 )/CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein homologous protein pathway induction, regardless of the p53 genotype...

Epidermoid cysts are infrequent, benign, slow-growing, space-occupying lesions that account for 0.5-1.8% of primary intracranial tumors. We report the case of a 17-month-old child who presented in 2015 for one episode of pallor associated with hypotonia. Epilepsy was excluded and MRI was recommended. The MRI was performed and there were no focal parenchymal lesions, but it showed an extra-axial ovoid lesion with imaging characteristics consistent with epidermoid cyst. Follow-up MRI at one year was performed and it showed minimal increased in dimensions of the cyst, without changes into the signal of the lesion...

Cystic lesions of the diaphragm are rare and accordingly present a diagnostic challenge. Specific radiological features with which to clinch a diagnosis may be elusive. Herein we present the case of a patient who presented with symptoms attributable to a cyst in the left upper abdomen, irritating the diaphragm. Surgery was considered appropriate for diagnostic and symptomatic purposes. Final histology demonstrated an epidermoid cyst. Resolution of symptoms was reported after surgery. Diaphragmatic epidermoid cysts appear to be a rare entity with only three prior cases reported in the literature...

Epidermoid cysts are infrequent lesions occupying the intracranial space, comprising approximately 1-2% of all intracranial tumors. Brainstem epidermoids are exceptionally uncommon in children; up until now, only a few scattered case reports have been documented in the literature regarding this unique location. These cysts commonly arise from the inclusion of ectodermal elements during neural tube closure. Complete excision of these cysts is challenging due to their close proximity and adherence to the brainstem, which makes it difficult to achieve...
