In May of 2020, November of 2021 and May of 2022, a preharvest fruit rot with white mycelia was observed inside and outside of the fruits of thick skin muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) growing in about ten greenhouses (each greenhouse had about 320 muskmelons) with disease incidence of 70% in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province of China. In order to identify the causal agent, plant tissues from the margin of the symptomatic tissue were sterilized for 1 min with 1% sodium hypochlorite (NaClO), 2 min with 75% ethyl alcohol, rinsed in sterile distilled water three times (Zhou et al 2019), and then placed on potato dextrose agar (PDA) plates containing streptomycin sulfate (100 μg/mL) at 25℃ for 4 days...

Over the past three decades, the synthesis of new ionic liquids (ILs) and the expansion of their use in newer applications have grown exponentially. From the beginning of this vertiginous period, it was known that many of them were hygroscopic, which in some cases limited their use or altered the value of their measured physical properties with all the problems that this entails. In an earlier article, we addressed the hygroscopic grade achieved by the ILs 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium methyl sulfate, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethyl sulfate, 1-ethyl-3-methylpyridinium ethyl sulfate, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tosylate, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, 1-butyl-3-methylpyridinium tetrafluoroborate, 1-butyl-1-methylpiperidinium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl)imide, 1-methyl-1-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl)imide, 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl)imide, and methyl trioctyl ammonium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl)imide...

A key to understanding the roles of RNA in regulating gene expression is knowing their structures in vivo. One way to obtain this information is through probing structures of RNA with chemicals. To probe RNA structure directly in cells, membrane-permeable reagents that modify the Watson-Crick (WC) face of unpaired nucleotides can be used. While dimethyl sulfate (DMS) has led to substantial insight into RNA structure, it has limited nucleotide specificity in vivo, with WC face reactivity only at adenine (A) and cytosine (C) at neutral pH...

Pesticide residues may be present in olive oil because pesticides are applied to olive trees during their cultivation and growth for pest prevention and some of these pesticides are not easily degraded. Studies on pesticide residues in olive oil have mainly focused on the detection of single types of pesticide residues, and reports on the simultaneous detection of multiple pesticide residues are limited. At present, hundreds of pesticides with different polarities and chemical properties are used in practice...

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by a decades-long prodrome, consisting of a collection of non-motor symptoms that emerges prior to the motor manifestation of the disease. Of these non-motor symptoms, gastrointestinal dysfunction and deficits attributed to central norepinephrine (NE) loss, including mood changes and sleep disturbances, are frequent in the PD population and emerge early in the disease. Evidence is mounting that injury and inflammation in the gut and locus coeruleus (LC), respectively, underlie these symptoms, and the injury of these systems is central to the progression of PD...

Persulfate-based advanced oxidation process has been proven to be a promising method for the toxic pesticide chlorpyrifos (CPY) degradation in wastewater treatment. However, due to the limitation for the short-lived intermediates detection, a comprehensive understanding for the degradation pathway remains unclear. To address this issue, density functional theory was used to analyze the degradation mechanism of CPY at the M06-2X/6-311++G(3df,3pd)//M06-2X/6-31+G(d,p) level, and computational toxicology methods were employed to explore the toxicity of CPY and its degradation products...

Changes in the chemical composition of white tea during storage have been studied extensively; however, whether such chemical changes impact the efficacy of white tea in ameliorating colitis remains unclear. In this study, we compared the effects of new (2021 WP) and 10-year-old (2011 WP) white tea on 3% dextrose sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis in mice by gavaging mice with the extracts at 200 mg kg-1 day-1 . Chemical composition analysis showed that the levels of 50 compounds, such as flavanols, dimeric catechins, and amino acids, were significantly lower in the 2011 WP extract than in the 2021 WP extract, whereas the contents of 21 compounds, such as N -ethyl-2-pyrrolidinone-substituted flavan-3-ols, theobromine, and (-)-epigallocatechin-3-(3''- O -methyl) gallate, were significantly higher...

Sandwich culture systems are techniques that cultivate cells by sandwiching them between the top and bottom substrates. Since the substrates can be separated, the system is expected to be applied to the construct layering of patterned cells and to the isolation of stacked cells. In this study, we prepared hydrogels composed of zwitterionic sulfabetaine polymers, poly[2-(2-(methacryloyloxyethyl)dimethylammonio)ethyl-1-sulfate] (PZBMA). The ZBMA homopolymers have been shown to form aggregates in aqueous solutions due to their intermolecular interactions...

Fetal bovine serum (FBS) substitution remains one of the challenges to the realization of cultured meat production in the marketplace. In this study, three methods were developed to extract a substitute for FBS using egg white extract (EWE): using 25 mM CaCl2 /2.5 % ammonium sulfate/citric acid (A); ethyl alcohol (B); and 5 % ammonium sulfate/citric acid (C). B EWE can effectively replace up to 50 % of FBS in growth media (10 % of the total). The clinical treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is challenging. We developed copper sulfate (CuS)/disulfiram (DSF)/methacrylic acid-ethyl acrylate copolymer (EL)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) nanoplatform (CuS/DSF/EL/PVP) and evaluated its efficiency for treating IBD. After oral administration, the pH-sensitive EL protected the CuS/DSF/EL/PVP against degradation by acidic gastric juices. Once the colon was reached, EL was dissolved, releasing DSF and Cu2+ . Further, the main in vivo metabolite of DSF can bind to Cu2+ and form copper (II) N, N-diethyldithiocarbamate (CuET), which significantly alleviated acute colitis in mice...
