Sinonasal papilloma (SP), formerly Schneiderian papilloma, represents a rare group of benign epithelial neoplasms, most commonly identified in the sinonasal tract, while less frequently identified in the pharynx, lacrimal sac, and middle ear. Within temporal bone sinonasal-type papilloma (TBSP), there seems to be a much higher recurrence and malignant transformation risk than those identified in the sinonasal tract. Based on this clinical report and a review of the cases reported in the English literature, 49% of the 57 cases developed in the setting of concurrent or antecedent sinonasal or nasopharyngeal SP...

Tuberculous otitis media (TOM) is a rare disease. This study presents our experience in the diagnosis and treatment of TOM. A 49-year-old female had repeated ear discharge, vertigo, and severe hearing loss for six years, and underwent mastoid surgery four times because she was misdiagnosed with chronic suppurative otitis media. The patient had left-sided facial paralysis for two weeks when she was admitted to our hospital and was managed with radical mastoidectomy and facial nerve decompression. After surgery, facial nerve function gradually improved from grade V to grade II, and the patient was diagnosed with an unusual primary bilateral TOM after tuberculosis smear culture, pathologic examination, and tuberculosis DNA testing by the PCR technique...

INTRODUCTION: For pediatric patients, bone-conduction hearing devices (BCHD) have demonstrated excellent outcomes. Unique to this population, BCHD implant surgeries can be technically challenging in children due to thinner, developing bone and syndromes with atypical anatomy. Image-guided surgical navigation (IGSN) clarifies underlying skull structure, potentially improving outcomes. IGSN is commonly used in otorhinolaryngologic surgeries, but current use in BCHD placement surgeries remains unprecedented...

Malignant external otitis (MEO) is a rare inflammatory and infectious condition, typically caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa , that mainly affects diabetic or immunocompromised elderly patients and is associated with severe morbidity and mortality. It begins in the external auditory canal and rapidly progresses through the skull base, leading to osteomyelitis and may result in cranial neuropathy, especially of the facial nerve. Here we describe a rare neurological presentation of MEO in a 65-year old diabetic man, who presented with an 8-month progressing left otitis externa and evolved with ipsilateral proptosis, ophthalmoplegia, blindness, facial palsy, hearing loss and contralateral evolvement of the temporal bone with hearing impairment...

In cases of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks, reliable detection of their origins is needed to seal the leak sufficiently and prevent complications, such as meningitis. A method is presented here using intrathecal administered fluorescein in a clinical case of bilateral congenital ear malformation. A fluorescent dye is administered intrathecally to achieve intraoperative visualization of CSF leaks. The dye is applied 20 min before surgery, and concentration of 5% is used. Per every 10 kg of body weight, 0.1 mL of the fluid is applied intrathecally...

Involvement of the ear and temporal bone in acute leukemias are uncommon. We report a case of atypical mastoiditis with bilateral facial paralysis in a child diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). A 20-month-old male child was diagnosed with ALL and developed otorrhea unresponsive to antimicrobial treatment during the first week of chemotherapy followed by hearing loss, loss of balance, and bilateral facial paralysis. A CT scan of the mastoids showed cortical erosion of the temporal bone and presence of soft tissue contents filling the mastoid cells and external auditory canal bilaterally...

Labyrinthectomy is an effective surgical procedure for the management of poorly compensated unilateral peripheral vestibular dysfunction in the presence of a nonserviceable hearing. It involves removal of labyrinthine portion of the inner ear and exenteration of the neuroepithelium. In our institution, 8 cases underwent surgical labyrinthectomy from a period of 2013-2018 for various extensive disease manifestations, age ranges from 2 to 48 years. Includes, a child of 2 years age presented with bilateral foul smelling otorrhoea with external auditory canal cartilaginous stenosis, 5 cases of extensive cholesteatoma with labrynthitis and 2 cases of purulent labrynthitis among them 1 were suffering from Tuberculosis and was on Category 1 ATT and other one suffering from extensive granulation at the tympanomastoid area which was inconclusive of the diagnosis even after histopathological examination, so treated as tuberculosis and started on prophylactic antitubercular treatment in addition to surgery...

OBJECTIVES: To compare contralateral to ipsilateral stimulation with percutaneous and transcutaneous bone conduction implants. BACKGROUND: Bone conduction implants (BCIs) effectively treat conductive and mixed hearing losses. In some cases, such as in single-sided deafness, the BCI is implanted contralateral to the remaining healthy ear in an attempt to restore some of the benefits provided by binaural hearing. While the benefit of contralateral stimulation has been shown in at least some patients, it is not clear what cues or mechanisms contribute to this function...

OBJECTIVE: Cochlear implantation is routinely performed all over the world via the post-auricular, facial recess approach. Our case study describes the middle fossa approach for the management of bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss in a female child with multiple external, middle and inner ear malformations. The middle fossa approach has been reported sporadically and has been used inconsistently in patients with chronic otitis media and inner ear malformations. CASE STUDY: A 3-year-old female child presented with bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss, bilateral anotia, right cochlear nerve agenesis, right facial paralysis, bilateral mild inner ear dysplasia and an aberrant left facial nerve covering the left round window...
