Alternative therapies that can help achieve complete remission in dogs with lymphoma include total body irradiation and hematopoietic cell transplant, though there are few reports describing successes and pathologic sequelae of these procedures. During a 10-year period, 94 dogs with multicentric lymphoma received a hematopoietic cell transplant following total body irradiation at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Seven of these 94 dogs (7%) died prior to discharge, five (5%) of which presented for postmortem examination...

Interleukin receptor associated kinase 4 (IRAK4) plays an important role in innate immune signaling through Toll-like and interleukin-1 receptors and represents an attractive target for the treatment of inflammatory diseases and cancer. We previously reported the development of a potent, selective, and brain-penetrant imidazopyrimidine series of IRAK4 inhibitors. However, lead molecule BIO-7488 ( 1 ) suffered from low solubility which led to variable PK, compound accumulation, and poor in vivo tolerability...

Auricular chondritis of unknown cause was suspected in a 10-year-old male Bolognese dog with a five-month history of painful bilateral nodular and ulcerative pyogranulomatous dermatitis of the pinnae with putative auricular cartilage destruction. Pain and lesions resolved with immunosuppressive doses of prednisolone, yet the condition resulted in deformity of both pinnae and external canals.

BACKGROUND: Canine babesiosis is a clinically significant tick-transmitted disease caused by several species of the intraerythrocytic protozoan parasite Babesia, which result in a wide range of clinical manifestations, from mild, transient infection to serious disease and even death. OBJECTIVES: The current study aimed to estimate the global prevalence and associated risk factors of Babesia in dogs. METHODS: Multiple databases (PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest, Web of Science and Google Scholar) were searched for relevant literature published from January 2000 up to December 2022...

Shiga toxin‑producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are considered one of the most significant E. coli pathotypes transmitted by food, causing life‑threatening conditions in children and elderly people. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence and determine the prevalence of STEC in dogs in Serbia by conventional PCR method, targeting three major virulence genes (stx1, stx2, and eae). The overall percentage of positive samples was 12.87% (13/101), with the stx2 gene, the more potent of the two toxins, found in all the positive samples...

PURPOSE: Pet guardians are increasingly seeking vegan dog foods. However, research on the impact of these diets on gastrointestinal (GI) physiology and health is limited. In humans, vegan diets modify the GI microbiota, increasing beneficial digestive microorganisms. This study aimed to examine the canine fecal microbiota in response to a vegan diet compared to an animal-based diet. METHODS: Sixty-one client-owned healthy adult dogs completed a randomized, double-blinded longitudinal study...

A young miniature poodle was presented following blunt force trauma to the head. The dog initially responded well to medical management before developing clinical signs associated with increased intracranial pressure 48 h post-injury that became refractory to hyperosmolar therapy. A computed tomography scan obtained 76 h post-injury showed a short, oblique, non-displaced, complete fissure in the right temporal bone and a second short, oblique, non-displaced, complete fissure in the ventral aspect of the temporal bone...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the signalment and clinical, laboratory, treatment, and outcome features of dogs diagnosed with anticoagulant rodenticide (AR) intoxication in Saskatchewan. ANIMALS: We studied 349 dogs. PROCEDURE: Medical records from the Veterinary Medical Centre (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) between 1999 and 2022 were reviewed. Cases were included if they met at least 1 of the following criteria: owner witnessed the dog ingesting an AR; AR was seen in the vomitus when emesis was induced; the dog had clinical signs of coagulopathy, with elevation of PT ± aPTT that normalized after vitamin K1 therapy, in the presence of appropriate clinical and paraclinical data and the absence of other causes of hypocoagulable state determined by the primary clinician...

An 8-month-old intact male golden retriever dog was seen as a case requiring urgent attention 2 d after an altercation with a cat. The dog was febrile, anorexic, and reluctant to move. There was soft-tissue swelling on the left ventral abdomen that progressed to necrotizing cellulitis. Despite the severity of the wound, client financial constraints necessitated management on a low-cost, outpatient basis using empirical antibiotics and raw-honey bandages. The wound resolved fully in 5 wk.

Linguoverted mandibular canine teeth (LMC) is a common malocclusion in dogs. Several inclined bite-plane techniques using acrylic resin have been introduced to correct LMC in dogs. Although these techniques have suggested modifications to overcome shortcomings, there are still limitations; e.g ., high technical sensitivity, as the viscous acrylic resin must still be fabricated in the oral cavity. The authors developed a novel method for small-breed dogs that uses a doughy acrylic resin form to achieve an easy intraoral design and extraoral fabrication...

Controlled hypothermic storage (CHS) is a recent advance in lung transplantation (LTx) allowing preservation at temperatures higher than those achieved with traditional ice storage. The mechanisms explaining the benefits of CHS compared to conventional static ice storage (SIS) remain unclear and clinical data on safety and feasibility of lung CHS are limited. Therefore, we aimed to provide a focus review on animal experiments, molecular mechanisms, CHS devices, current clinical experience, and potential future benefits of CHS...

INTRODUCTION: Despite the potential health risks associated with feeding raw and non-traditional diets, the use of these diets in dogs is increasing, yet the health outcomes associated with these diets is not well understood. This study investigates the effect of feeding dogs a kibble or raw meat-based diets on fecal microbiota composition, serum metabolomics and inflammatory markers. METHODS: Clinically healthy dogs with a history of consuming either kibble (KD, n  = 27) or raw meat-based diets (RMBD, n  = 28) for more than 1 year were enrolled...

RESULTS: The prevalence of infection was 86.0% (270/314 wild rabbits) ranging from 18.2% to 100% in natural geographical regions. The estimated average parasite load was 324.8 [CI 95% 95.3-554.3] parasites per mg of ear lobe ranging from 0 to 91,597 parasites/mg per tissue section. The study investigated whether malondialdehyde (MDA), a biomarker for oxidative stress, can be used as a viable parameter in dog saliva for the diagnosis or early detection of periodontal disease (PD). Saliva MDA concentrations were measured preoperatively in dogs diagnosed with PD during dental prophylaxis and compared with those of dentally healthy dogs. 35 dogs were included in the study. The average MDA concentration was 270 ng/ml (range 27-633) in the dogs without PD (n = 10) and 183 (36-833) ng/ml (ng/ml) in the dogs with PD (n = 25)...
