PURPOSE: To report three cases of hemorrhagic unilateral retinopathy, diagnosed by multimodal imaging. METHODS: Case report of 3 patients, 2 women and one man, aged 51, 74, and 52, respectively. RESULTS: Symptoms were acute floaters, blurred vision, or central scotoma, unilateral in all cases. The best-corrected visual acuity was 20/20 in the affected eye in 2 patients with a paracentral scotoma, and 20/160 in the third patient. Funduscopic examination revealed multiple unilateral posterior hemorrhages located in the Henle fiber layer in the macula and beneath the internal limiting membrane around the optic disc on spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT)...

The high-altitude imaging capabilities of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) offer an effective solution for maritime Search and Rescue (SAR) operations. In such missions, the accurate identification of boats, personnel, and objects within images is crucial. While object detection models trained on general image datasets can be directly applied to these tasks, their effectiveness is limited due to the unique challenges posed by the specific characteristics of maritime SAR scenarios. Addressing this challenge, our study leverages the large-scale benchmark dataset SeaDronesSee, specific to UAV-based maritime SAR, to analyze and explore the unique attributes of image data in this scenario...

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Optometrists should look to take every opportunity to expand their knowledge, understanding and skills pertaining to vitreoretinal conditions. BACKGROUND: Despite the existence of acute eye care schemes and the up-skilling of optometrists, many units are still noticing large numbers of poor-quality referrals with high false positive rates. The authors pondered whether these schemes are effective. METHODS: At two different time points, a prospective analysis of patients took place, of all the flashing lights and floaters referrals coming into secondary care at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Wales, UK...

Introduction: Professional rugby union players can improve their performance by engaging in small-sided games (SSGs), which simulate the movement patterns of the game. This study collected metrics related to running performance and mechanical workload and their relative values from both forward and back positions, aiming to explore the impact of different SSGs factors on athlete workload, as well as the workload difference between official games (OGs) and SSGs. Methods: The monitored GPS data were collected from SSGs with different player numbers and pitch sizes (five sessions), SSG rules (5 weeks, four sessions per week), and OGs conducted throughout the year...

Faricimab is a newly approved bispecific antibody for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). Our study aims to evaluate clinical outcomes of faricimab switching in patients with treatment-refractory nAMD; determine parameters that predict these outcomes; and obtain patient subjective experience on this new injection. This is a retrospective case review with clinical and imaging data from a tertiary referral unit (Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre, UK), involving patients who were switched to faricimab between 1 January and 1 December 2023...

BACKGROUND: We report an unusual case of retinal vein occlusion (RVO) associated with vitreous hemorrhage (VH) without visible traction from the posterior vitreous membrane (PVM) at the bleeding point, challenging our current understanding of VH pathophysiology. CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old man presented with VH in the right eye. A detailed examination using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and ultra-widefield fluorescein angiography revealed branch RVO with non-perfused areas (NPAs) extending peripherally and neovascularization elsewhere (NVE)...

The research platform includes the Microgravity Active Vibration Isolation System (MAVIS) for isolating the FPR from disturbances arising from the space station itself. The MAVIS is a structural platform consisting of a stator and floater that are monitored and controlled with non-contact electromagnetic actuators, high-precision accelerometers, and displacement transducers...

OBJECTIVES: "Floaters," a common complaint among patients of all ages, was used as a query term because it affects 30% of all people searching for eye care. The American Academy of Ophthalmology website's "floaters" section was used as a source for questions and answers (www.aao.org). Floaters is a visual obstruction that moves with the movement of the eye. They can be associated with retinal detachment, which can lead to vision loss. With the advent of large language model (LLM) chatbots ChatGPT, Bard versus virtual assistants (VA), Google Assistant, and Alexa, we analyzed their responses to "floaters...

Investigations of eye movements were transformed by Ewald Hering in 1879. He developed a novel method for recording them using the muscular sounds attendant on their rapid movements. Brief "clapping" sounds could be heard with the aid of a device like a stethoscope placed on the eyelid and they occurred when afterimages or "floaters" were seen to move. Hering applied the technique to record eye movements during reading and he called the rapid eye movements Rucke (jerks in English). Hering published a long review of eye movements and spatial vision later in 1879, but without a description of the muscle sounds...

INTRODUCTION: Gardner Syndrome (GS) is a variant of Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP). FAP is characterized by several precancerous adenomatous intestinal polyps while GS has additional distinct extraintestinal features such as congenital hypertrophy of retinal epithelium (CHRPE), which we describe here. DISCUSSION: Subtle CHRPE findings differentiate pathological, described in the present case, from non-pathological etiologies and may guide further management...

Acute retinal necrosis (ARN) is an inflammatory disease that is primarily caused by herpesvirus infection, most commonly varicella-zoster virus (VZV), followed by herpes simplex virus (HSV) and occasionally cytomegalovirus (CMV). Sintilimab is an immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) that can enhance the body's anti-tumor immune response. However, treatment with ICIs may lead to reactivation of the VZV. Here, we present a case of ARN caused by VZV infection in a patient receiving sintilimab for cervical cancer...

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC) is an extremely rare and highly aggressive malignant neoplasm of the nasal cavity and/or paranasal sinuses. SNUC is clinicopathologically distinctive from other tumors but is difficult to study due to its low incidence. There is also very little consensus about the etiology of SNUC, including its association with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Treatment modalities include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation depending on the stage and grading. Herein, we discuss a patient who presented to the emergency department with chronic rhinorrhea and various ophthalmologic symptoms such as flashes, floaters, and diplopia...

Wildlife conservation strategies focused on one season or population segment may fail to adequately protect populations, especially when a species' habitat preferences vary among seasons, age-classes, geographic regions, or other factors. Conservation of golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) is an example of such a complex scenario, in which the distribution, habitat use, and migratory strategies of this species of conservation concern vary by age-class, reproductive status, region, and season. Nonetheless, research aimed at mapping priority use areas to inform management of golden eagles in western North America has typically focused on territory-holding adults during the breeding period, largely to the exclusion of other seasons and life-history groups...

Purpose: To present a case of full-thickness macular hole (MH) that developed in association with acute subretinal hemorrhage from wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Methods: A retrospective observational review of a single case was performed. BACKGROUND: Vitreous floaters are a common ocular condition that affects individuals of all ages. Although vitreous floaters are typically benign, they can significantly impair visual acuity and quality of life. Laser vitreolysis, which uses an Nd: YAG laser to vaporize collagenous vitreous opacities, is increasingly being used as a treatment option. However, there is currently a lack of evidence regarding its efficacy and the appropriate timing of its application. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of early intervention with YAG laser vitreolysis in treating symptomatic vitreous floaters...
