Transfusion-transmitted hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is an increasing concern in many countries. We investigated the detection rate of HEV viremia in blood donors in Russia. A total of 20,405 regular repetitive voluntary non-renumerated blood donors from two regions (Moscow and Belgorod) were screened for HEV RNA using the cobas® HEV test in mini-pools of six plasma samples. Samples from each reactive pool were tested individually. The average HEV RNA prevalence was 0.024% (95% CI: 0.01-0.05%), or 1 case per 4081 donations...

BACKGROUND: Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) increases the early detection of lung cancer. Identifying modifiable behaviors that may affect tumor progression in LDCT-detected patients increases the likelihood of long-term survival and a good quality of life. METHODS: We examined cigarette smoking behaviors on lung cancer stage, progression, and survival in 299 ever-smoking patients with low-dose CT-detected tumors from the National Lung Screening Trial. Univariate and multivariate Cox models were used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) for smoking variables on survival time...

BACKGROUND: Cancer patients are often treated with radiation, therefore increasing their exposure to high energy emissions. In such cases, medical errors may be threatening or fatal, inducing the need to innovate new methods for maximum reduction of irreversible events. Training is an efficient and methodical tool to subject professionals to the real world and heavily educate them on how to perform with minimal errors. An evolving technique for this is Serious Gaming that can fulfill this purpose, especially with the rise of COVID-19 and the shift to the online world, by realistic and visual simulations built to present engaging scenarios...

OBJECTIVE: Pre-eruptive intramural resorption (PEIR) is defined as an abnormal, well-circumscribed radiolucency within the coronal dentin of the tooth, which is often overlooked in plain radiographs. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of PEIR and its related factors using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: CBCT images of 590 unerupted teeth were evaluated for the presence of PEIR, location of PEIR, number of lesions in the affected tooth, PEIR score, tooth angulation, tooth position, and pericoronal space...

BACKGROUND: Recent modifications to low-dose CT (LDCT)-based lung cancer screening guidelines increase the number of eligible individuals, particularly among racial and ethnic minorities. Because these populations disproportionately live in metropolitan areas, we analyzed the association between travel time and initial LDCT completion within an integrated, urban safety-net health care system. METHODS: Using Esri's StreetMap Premium, OpenStreetMap, and the r5r package in R, we determined projected private vehicle and public transportation travel times between patient residence and the screening facility for LDCT ordered in March 2017 through December 2022 at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas...

Infective endocarditis (IE) is characterised by fever, heart murmurs, and emboli. Splenic emboli are frequent in left-sided IE. A systematic review of the literature published on splenic embolism (SE) between 2000 and 2023 was conducted. Search strategies in electronic databases identified 2751 studies published between 1 January 2000 and 4 October 2023, of which 29 were finally included. The results showed that the imaging tests predominantly used to detect embolisms were computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography (PET)/CT, single-photon emission computed tomography/CT, ultrasound, and contrast-enhanced ultrasound...

Low-dose computed tomography screening for lung cancer is currently targeted at heavy smokers or those with a family history of lung cancer. This study aimed to identify risk factors for lung cancer in individuals who do not meet the current lung cancer screening criteria as stipulated by the Taiwan Health Promotion Agency's low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening policy. A cohort analysis was conducted on 12,542 asymptomatic healthy subjects aged 20-80 years old who voluntarily underwent LDCT scans from January 2016 to December 2021...

BACKGROUND: Renal artery thrombosis is rare and limited reports exist in the young population. The most common aetiology is thromboembolic disease or abdominal trauma in this population and isolated occurrences are extremely rare. We present the case of an 18-year-old woman with spontaneous unilateral renal artery thrombosis and infarction for whom reperfusion was achieved through endovascular intervention. The aetiology of her thrombosis remains unclear and is under investigation with differential diagnoses being fibromuscular dysplasia, large and medium vessel vasculitis, and thromboembolic causes...

Four randomized controlled trials of large infarct core volume (LICV) included three imaging modalities: non-contrast CT (NCCT)-Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS), diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI)-ASPECTS, and NCCT-ASPECTS combined with CTP (CT perfusion). However, there is no clear consensus on the optimal imaging modality for endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) trials of large core infarcts. The variety and complexity of imaging modalities make it difficult to apply them in clinical practice. By familiarizing ourselves with these imaging modalities, we can better apply them in the clinic and correctly screen patients with large core infarcts in the anterior circulation who can benefit from EVT therapy...

BACKGROUND: Current research on radiomics for diagnosing and prognosing acute pancreatitis predominantly revolves around model development and testing. However, there is a notable absence of ongoing interpretation and analysis regarding the physical significance of these models and features. Additionally, there is a lack of extensive exploration of visual information within the images. This limitation hinders the broad applicability of radiomics findings. This study aims to address this gap by specifically analyzing filtered Computed Tomography (CT) image features of acute pancreatitis to identify meaningful visual markers in the pancreas and peripancreatic area...

The intricate nature of lung cancer treatment poses considerable challenges upon diagnosis. Early detection plays a pivotal role in mitigating its escalating global mortality rates. Consequently, there are pressing demands for robust and dependable early detection and diagnostic systems. However, the technological limitations and complexity of the disease make it challenging to implement an efficient lung cancer screening system. AI-based CT image analysis techniques are showing significant contributions to the development of computer-assisted detection (CAD) systems for lung cancer screening...

OBJECTIVES: Parainfluenza virus type 3 (PIV3) outbreaks among hematology patients are associated with high morbidity and mortality. Prompt implementation of infection prevention (IP) measures has proven to be the most efficacious approach for controlling PIV3 outbreaks within this patient population. The most suitable IP measures can vary depending on the mode of virus transmission, which remains unidentified in most outbreaks. We describe the molecular epidemiology of an outbreak of PIV3 among hematology patients and the development of a new method that allows for the differentiation of outbreak and community strains, from which a closed outbreak could be inferred...

INTRODUCTION: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) encompasses a spectrum of disability including early cognitive impairment (ECI). The Brain Injury Guidelines (BIG) suggest mTBI patients can be safely discharged from the Emergency Department. Although half of mTBI patients with intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) have evidence of ECI, it is unclear what percentage of these patients' ECI persists after discharge. We hypothesize a significant proportion of trauma patients with mTBI and ECI at presentation have persistent ECI at 30-day follow-up...

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate whether routine screening for silent pulmonary embolism (PE) can be justified in patients with deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
