Graptemys ouachitensis (CAGLE, 1953) belongs to the Graptemys genus, the Emydidae family, and the Testudines order. This study involved sequencing the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of G. ouachitensis using next-generation sequencing, and analyzing the essential characteristics, and phylogenetic relationship. The results revealed that the G. ouachitensis mitogenome was 16,674 bp in length (A: 34.1%, C: 26.0%, G: 13.0%, T: 26.9%) and included 22 tRNAs , 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and a non-coding control region (GenBank accession: NC071766)...

A total of 333 vials of nematodes collected from three species of Isoodon (representing three individuals of I. auratus, 63 of I. fusciventer and 92 of I. obesulus ) held in the Australian Helminthological Collection of the South Australian Museum were examined. Nematodes were identified and the nematode assemblages of the three hosts were compared with each other and with the assemblage of Isoodon macrourus. Two fully identified species were recovered from I. auratus, eight from I. fusciventer and 14 from I...

The factors that affect resident satisfaction with emerging residential integrated care for older people in China have been unclear due to a lack of validated instruments. Based on psychometric assessment procedures, we developed a new scale for older resident satisfaction with residential integrated care (SORSRIC). The scale was developed using a two-step process and a sample of 16 Chinese institutions and 333 residents. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis was used to evaluate reliability and validity...

Osmotic energy from proton gradients in industrial acidic wastewater can be harvested and converted to electricity through membranes, making it a renewable and sustainable power source. However, the currently designed membranes for harvesting proton gradient energy in acidic wastewater cannot simultaneously achieve excellent chemical/mechanical stability and high power density under a large-scale area and require high cost and complex operations. Here, we demonstrate that commercial Nafion membranes with high chemical/mechanical stability and proton transport selectivity can generate a power density of 5...

BACKGROUND: Skeletal muscle injury in Ebola virus disease (EVD) has been reported, but its association with morbidity and mortality remains poorly defined. METHODS: Retrospective study of patients admitted to two EVD Treatment Units, over an eight-month period in 2019, during a large EVD epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. RESULTS: 333 patients (median age 30 years, 58% female) had at least one creatine kinase (CK) measurement (total 2,229 CK measurements, median 5 (IQR 1-11) per patient)...

BACKGROUND: Hemoptysis is a challenging and potentially life-threatening medical condition. The most appropriate diagnostic work-up is debated and several diagnostic approaches are implemented worldwide. METHODS: An international, online survey was carried out to investigate the current practice of the diagnostic work-up of patients with hemoptysis of unknown etiology. RESULTS: overall, 604 physicians responded to the survey. At baseline, chest X-ray was suggested as the first diagnostic investigation by 342 (56...

The escalating global demand for clean energy has spurred substantial interest in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) as a promising solution for large-scale energy storage systems. However, the insufficient reaction kinetics and considerable volume changes inherent to anode materials present significant hurdles to enhancing the electrochemical performance of SIBs. In this study, hierarchical MoS2 /WS2 heterostructures were constructed into dual carbon layers (HC@MoS2 /WS2 @NC) and assessed their suitability as anodes for SIBs...

This study investigated the morphology of Rhinella crucifer cutaneous glands, as well as the protein/peptide profiles and bioactivities of body gland secretions (BGS) and parotoid macrogland secretions (PS). The parotoid as well as dorsal and ventral skin fragments of male and female individuals were processed for histological analysis. The protein and peptide profiles of male and female gland secretions were evaluated. Male secretions were also assessed for proteolytic, trypsin inhibiting, hemagglutinating, hemolytic, antimicrobial, and anticoagulant activities...

BACKGROUND: In the beef industry, bull calves are usually castrated to improve flavor and meat quality; however, this can reduce their growth and slaughter performance. The gut microbiota is known to exert a significant influence on growth and slaughter performance. However, there is a paucity of research investigating the impact of castration on gut microbiota composition and its subsequent effects on slaughter performance and meat flavor. In the present study, green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (VNE-AgNPs) via Verbascum nudatum extract was carried out for the first time. The synthesized AgNPs were characterized by different spectral methods such as UV-vis, FTIR, XRD, TEM, and EDAX. According to TEM analyses, the average size range of AgNPs was 17-21 nm, and the dominant peaks in the 111°, 200°, 221°, and 311° planes in the XRD pattern indicated the Ag-NPs FCC crystal structure. FTIR data showed that VNE-AgNPs interacted with many reducing, capping, and stabilizing phytochemicals during green synthesis...

We investigated the potential of waste materials from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to serve as an alternative lipid feedstock for biodiesel production. The average lipid recoveries from fat balls (46.4%) and primary scum (49.5-54.5%) were higher than the lipid recovery of primary sludge (15.8-16.4%). The yield of biodiesel produced from the extracted lipids ranged from 5.7 to 20.1%. There were considerable site- and season-dependent variations in the characteristics of the lipid waste materials. Radiocarbon analysis indicated the presence of fossil-derived carbon (26...

PURPOSE: In the literature, the propriety of the meta-analytic treatment-effect produced by combining randomized controlled trials (RCT) and non-randomized studies (NRS) is questioned, given the inherent confounding in NRS that may bias the meta-analysis. The current study compared an implicitly principled pooled Bayesian meta-analytic treatment-effect with that of frequentist pooling of RCT and NRS to determine how well each approach handled the NRS bias. MATERIALS & METHODS: Binary outcome Critical-Care meta-analyses, reflecting the importance of such outcomes in Critical-Care practice, combining RCT and NRS were identified electronically...

Partial nephrectomy (PN) is the primary surgical method for renal tumor treatment, typically involving clamping the renal artery during tumor removal, leading to warm ischemia and potential renal function impairment. Off-clamp approaches have been explored to mitigate organ damage, yet few results have emerged about the possible effects on hemoglobin loss. Most evidence comes from retrospective studies using propensity score matching, known to be sensitive to PS model misspecification. The energy balancing weights (EBW) method offers an alternative method to address bias by focusing on balancing all the characteristics of covariate distribution...
