BACKGROUND: Healthcare providers carry the occupational risk of being exposed to pathogens. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) requires proficiency whenever used. Yet, evidence shows significant errors and variation in competency when applying PPE. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we developed a three-phase intervention to promote PPE proficiency. METHODS: Education and assessment of participants' PPE knowledge and skills occurred at a large academic university in Western Canada...

OBJECTIVES: Prevention programs that can help adults improve the quality of their diets to reduce cancer risk are needed. This Phase IIa study prospectively tested a mHealth intervention designed to improve adherence to dietary quality guidelines for cancer prevention. METHODS: All participants (N = 62) received nutrition education and a self-regulation skills curriculum, with a primary target of changing grocery shopping behavior. Using a randomized, factorial design, the study varied whether each of the following 4 components were added to the 20-week intervention: (1) location-triggered app messaging, delivered when individuals arrived at grocery stores, (2) reflections on benefits of change, delivered with extra coaching time and tailored app messages, (3) coach monitoring, in which food purchases were digitally monitored by a coach, and (4) involvement of a household member in the intervention...

GOAL: Employee assistance programs (EAPs) have been evolving since they first became prevalent in the 1970s. The important counseling component of EAPs is sometimes lost in discussions about what they do, with many EAPs marketing a broad portfolio of services such as childcare, elder care, legal referral, and other concierge services rather than counseling. The objective of this study was to examine outcomes for the EAP of one organization (Mayo Clinic), compare them to outcomes reported in the literature, and gain insights to help all healthcare organizations best support their employees...

BACKGROUND: Evaluating organ suitability for transplantation based on infection risk is a core competency in transplant infectious disease (TID). It is unclear if trainees have opportunities to practice during training. We created a simulation curriculum to develop and evaluate this skill among infectious disease (ID) trainees. METHODS: We created six simulation questions about organ suitability for transplant based on infection risk. During trainees' TID rotations, faculty texted or paged the simulation cases posing as the transplant coordinator...

The purpose of the present study was to conduct a process evaluation of intervention delivery for a randomized controlled trial (RCT) conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic (NCT03915548). The RCT tested the effects of a telephone-delivered behavioral intervention on changes in breast cancer survivors' satisfaction with social roles and activities, as compared to an attention control condition. This process evaluation examined (a) fidelity monitoring scores; (b) participants' perceived benefit ratings for gaining confidence, reducing distress, adjusting habits and routines, setting goals, and increasing exercise; and (c) field notes, email communications, and transcripts of coach supervision and debriefing sessions...

In addition to medical knowledge and psychomotor skills, anesthesiology practice requires the ability to work within a complex system, navigate social situations, manage conflict, and lead teams. Coaching has foundations in psychology and adult learning theory and uses a process of inquiry, reflection, and shared discernment to discover values, goals, and solutions. There is increasing use and evidence for coaching in medicine and anesthesiology to support personal and professional growth. Individual and group coaching for anesthesiologists may improve anesthesiologists' ability to communicate, collaborate and solve problems, improving well-being, culture, and plausibly, patient outcomes...

PURPOSE: The R2C2 (relationship, reaction, content, coaching) model is an iterative, evidence-based, theory-informed approach to feedback and coaching that enables preceptors and learners to build relationships, explore reactions and reflections, confirm content, and coach for change and cocreate an action plan. This study explored application of the R2C2 model for in-the-moment feedback conversations between preceptors and learners and the factors that influence its use. METHOD: A qualitative study using framework analysis through the lens of experiential learning was undertaken with 15 trained preceptor-learner dyads...

INTRODUCTION: Nursing competency is an essential component for improving the quality of care in the healthcare system. However, assessing competency solely on the dimensions of skills and knowledge does not provide complete picture of a nurse ability to provide quality patient care. This is because it lacks focus on the nurse's attitudes and values, which are also important determinants of clinical competence. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the comprehensive clinical competence of nurses and its associated factors in public hospitals of Gamo Zone, Southern Ethiopia...

Developing the future leaders of biomedical science is fundamentally the most important role that we play in academic medicine. Similar to the path to elite championship athletics, the path begins early: engaging young minds to find excitement in science, enlightening medical students on the importance of curiosity, challenging faculty to achieve milestones and mature as leaders. Coaching strategies are critical and are different at each developmental stage. It may seem that it is becoming harder to entice young talent to pursue a career in biomedical research, or that the perpetually leaky pipeline is corroding to the point of hemorrhage...

BACKGROUND: Opportunities to practice procedural skills in the clinical learning environment are decreasing, and faculty time to coach skills is limited, even in simulation-based training. Self-directed learning with hands-on practice early in a procedural skill course might help maximize the benefit of later faculty coaching and clinical experience. However, it may also lead to well-learned errors if learners lack critical guidance. The present study sought to investigate the effects of a hands-on, self-directed "study hall" for central line insertion among first-year residents...
