Nephroblastoma or Wilms' tumor is the most common malignant tumor of the kidney in the pediatric population. Metastasis is caused by hematogenous spread. The most common localizations in decreasing order of frequency are lymph nodes, lungs, and liver. The bone is very rarely affected. According to the literature, bone metastases have been described in the iliac bone, skull, and mandible. The vertebral localization was described in 3 cases only, the first 1 in 2009, and the 2 others in 2015 . The goal of our work is to report a very rare case of metastatic vertebral localization of a Wilms' tumor in relapse after treatment; and thus to underline the potential for vertebral and intracanal involvement in nephroblastoma...

Breast cancer is a major contributor to cancer-related morbidity and mortality in women, which is primarily attributed to metastases. Common metastatic sites include the lungs, liver, and bone, whereas bladder metastasis is rare. We report a case of bladder metastasis from breast cancer in a 61-year-old woman, highlighting the challenges in diagnosis and treatment. The patient, previously diagnosed with invasive lobular carcinoma, presented with renal failure and underwent transurethral resection of bladder tumor...

Breast cancer affects around 13% of women. Breast cancer gene 1 ( BRCA1 ) carriers are prone to lung and lymph node metastasis, while breast cancer gene 2 ( BRCA2 ) carriers tend to have bone metastasis. Findings of pulmonary nodules, mediastinal lymphadenopathy, and elevated markers such as cancer antigen (CA) 15-3 and CA 27-29 suggest metastatic disease. Here, we present the case of a patient with BRCA1 -positive breast cancer in remission and a history of ovarian cancer with mediastinal lymphadenopathy and pulmonary nodules, with avid fluorodeoxyglucose uptake on positron emission tomography (PET) scan and elevated CA 15-3 and CA 27-29...

Pulmonary atypical carcinoid (AC) is an extremely rare neuroendocrine tumor. The neurotrophic tropomyosin receptor kinase (NTRK) fusions are reported in only 0.5% of nonsmall cell lung cancer, and are more rare in AC with only one previously reported case. Currently, there is little established evidence on the optimal therapeutic strategies and prognosis for advanced cases. We present a female patient with metastatic AC after complete resection. Due to low expression of somatostatin receptor in this case, somatostatin analogs and peptide receptor radionuclide therapy were not available...

BACKGROUND: Although carotid body tumors (CBTs) are rare, they attract particular attention because of their propensity for malignant transformation and the high surgical risk. Because data are scarce and as it is difficult to achieve a large sample size, no study has yet comprehensively analyzed the characteristics, management, or operative complications of CBTs. Therefore, we collected and analyzed all currently available information on CBTs and used the pooled data to derive quantitative information on disease characteristics and management...

BACKGROUND: Clear cell sarcoma (CCS) is a rare soft-tissue sarcoma. The most common metastatic sites for CCS are the lungs, bones and brain. CCS is highly invasive and mainly metastasizes to the lung, followed by the bone and brain; however, pancreatic metastasis is relatively rare. CASE SUMMARY: We report on a rare case of CCS with pancreatic metastasis in a 47-year-old man. The patient had a relevant medical history 3 years ago, with abdominal pain as the main clinical manifestation...

PURPOSE: Tumor classification is a key component in personalized cancer care. For soft tissue and bone tumors, this classification is currently based primarily on morphology assessment and immunohistochemical staining. However, these standard-of-care methods can pose challenges for pathologists. We therefore assessed how whole-genome and whole-transcriptome sequencing (WGTS) impacted tumor classification and clinical management when interpreted together with histomorphology. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We prospectively evaluated WGTS in routine diagnostics of 200 soft tissue and bone tumors suspicious for malignancy, including DNA and RNA isolation from the tumor, and DNA isolation from a peripheral blood sample or any non-tumor tissue...

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma is a very rare vascular neoplasm, which is often multifocal or metastatic at diagnosis. Most frequently arises in the liver, followed by the lung and bones. The authors present a case of a liver transplant recipient who developed a pattern of hepatic cholestasis associated with the appearance of a proliferative hepatic lesion with infiltrative growth. Histological examination and immunohistochemical study were compatible with the diagnosis of epithelioid hemangioendothelioma...

INTRODUCTION: Over the past decade, immune checkpoint inhibitors such as antibodies against cytotoxicity T-lymphocyte-associated protein 4 (CTLA-4) and programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) have become an important armamentarium against a broad spectrum of malignancies. However, these specific inhibitors can cause adverse autoimmune reactions by impairing self-tolerance. Hematologic side effects of immune checkpoint inhibitors, including autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA), are rare but can be life-threatening...

OBJECTIVE: Staging workup and detection of distant metastases is important in newly diagnosed breast cancer in order to make treatment decisions and establish the prognosis. There is wide variation in current recommendations for staging investigations in breast cancer. Routine staging is performed for all patients in Bahrain because of lack of consistent guidelines. Optimization of the criteria for staging is important for identification of metastases, while minimizing harm and costs...

OBJECTIVE: Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common malignant tumor in the male genitourinary system. Once PCa has metastasized, it is very difficult to cure. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prognostic risk factor analysis of patients with different prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in distant metastatic PCa. At the same time, we construct effective models for predicting the survival rate of prostate cancer patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data on prostate cancer patients with the presence of distant metastases were obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database...

Resistance to androgen receptor (AR) inhibitors, including enzalutamide (Enz), as well as bone metastasis, are major challenges for castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) treatment. In this study, we identified that miR26a can restore Enz sensitivity and inhibit bone metastatic CRPC. To achieve the highest combination effect of miR26a and Enz, we developed a cancer-targeted nano-system (Bm@PT/Enz-miR26a) using bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (BMSC) membrane and T140 peptide to co-deliver Enz and miR26a...

INTRODUCTION: The bone tumor, osteosarcoma, remains challenging to treat in children and young adults, especially when patients present with metastatic disease. Developing new therapies based on genomic data from sequencing projects has proven difficult given the lack of recurrent genetic lesions across tumors. MYC overexpression has been associated with poor outcomes in osteosarcoma. However, other genomic markers of disease severity are lacking. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We utilized whole genome sequencing of 106 tumors and matched normal controls in order to define genomic characteristics that correlate with overall survival...

Bone metastasis in urothelial cancer is underreported and not well-researched. A case of urothelial carcinoma (UC) with bone metastasis presenting as musculoskeletal pain is reported. The patient presented with persistent lower back pain associated with right lower extremity pain, numbness, and tingling. Initially, a diagnosis of sciatica was suspected, but the patient did not respond to treatment. An MRI spine was done, which revealed a bright signal mass in the vertebral body suspicious for a metastatic lesion, left hydroureteronephrosis, and a nonspecific cystic focus in the right iliacus muscle...

PURPOSE: Brain metastasis (BM) in colorectal cancer (CRC) is a rare event with poor prognosis. Apart from (K)RAS status and lung and bone metastasis no biomarkers exist to identify patients at risk. This study aimed to identify a gene expression signature associated with colorectal BM. METHODS: Three patient groups were formed: 1. CRC with brain metastasis (BRA), 2. exclusive liver metastasis (HEP) and, 3. non-metastatic disease (M0). RNA was extracted from primary tumors and mRNA expression was measured using a NanoString Panel (770 genes)...
