Strigolactones are a class of phytohormones with various functions in plant development, stress responses, and in the interaction with (micro)organisms in the rhizosphere. While their effects on vegetative development are well studied, little is known about their role in reproduction. We investigated the effects of genetic and chemical modification of strigolactone levels on the timing and intensity of flowering in tomato ( Solanum lycopersicum L.) and the molecular mechanisms underlying such effects. Results showed that strigolactone levels in the shoot, whether endogenous or exogenous, correlate inversely with the time of anthesis and directly with the number of flowers and the transcript levels of the florigen-encoding gene SINGLE FLOWER TRUSS ( SFT ) in the leaves...

Gouda-type cheeses were produced on a pilot-scale from raw milk (RM-G) and pasteurized milk (PM-G). Sixteen key aroma compounds previously characterized by the sensomics approach were quantitated in the unripened cheeses and at five different ripening stages (4, 7, 11, 19, and 30 weeks) by means of stable isotope dilution assays. Different trends were observed in the formation of the key aroma compounds. Short-chain free fatty acids and ethyl butanoate as well as ethyl hexanoate continuously increased during ripening but to a greater extent in RM-G...

In the present study, a total of 11 andrographolide-loaded emulgels (ANG 1- ANG 11) were prepared by emulsification and solvent evaporation method using flaxseed oil and xanthan gum in different ratios, as suggested by the Design-Expert software. A 2-factor-5-level design was employed with different responses including spreadability, extrudability, viscosity, and drug release after 1 h (h) and 24 h. Based on the Design-Expert software response, the optimized emulgel ANG 12 was formulated and evaluated...

Citrus reticulata dropped fruits are generally discarded as waste, causing environmental pollution and losses to farmers. In the present study, column chromatography has been used to isolate quinic acid (1,3,4,5-tetrahydroxycyclohexane-1-carboxylic acid) from the ethyl acetate fraction of a methanol extract of citrus fruits dropped in April. Quinic acid is a ubiquitous plant metabolite found in various plants and microorganisms. It is an important precursor in the biosynthesis of aromatic natural compounds...

Here we report a carbene-catalyzed enantio- and diastereoselective [4+2] cycloaddition reaction of cyclobutenones with isatins for the quick and efficient synthesis of spirocyclic δ-lactones bearing a chiral chlorine. A broad range of substrates with various substitution patterns proceed smoothly in this reaction, with the spirooxindole δ-lactone products afforded in generally good to excellent yields and optical purities under mild reaction conditions.

The activation of esters by strong Lewis acids via the formation of covalent adducts is a classic strategy to give reactivity; however, this approach frequently incurs limited turnover due to the low efficiency in the dissociation of catalyst from a stable catalyst-product complex. While the use of some weak interaction catalysts that can easily dissociate from any bonding complexes in the reaction system would solve this catalyst turnover problem, the poor catalytic activity in the ester activation that can be provided by these noncovalent forces in turn sets up a formidable challenge...

The detection of N-hexanoyl-l-homoserine lactone (C6 -HSL), a crucial signal in Gram-negative bacterial communication, is essential for addressing microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) induced by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in oil and gas industries. Metal oxides (MOx) intercalated into conducting polymers (CPs) offer a promising sensing approach due to their effective detection of biological molecules such as C6 -HSL. In this study, we synthesized and characterized two MOx/polyaniline-dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid (PANI-DBSA) nanocomposites, namely ZnO/PANI-DBSA and Fe2 O3 /PANI-DBSA...

Synthesis of monomer-recyclable polyesters solely from CO2 and bulk olefins holds great potentials in significantly reducing CO2 emissions and addressing the issue of plastic pollutions. Due to the kinetic disadvantage of direct copolymerization of CO2 and bulk olefins compared to homopolymerization of bulk olefins, considerable research attention has been devoted to synthesis of polyester via the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of a six-membered disubstituted lactone intermediate, 1,2-ethylidene-6-vinyl-tetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-one (𝜹-L), obtained from telomerization of CO2 and 1,3-butadiene...

Owing to stereoelectronic effects, lactones often deviate in reactivity from their open-chain ester analogues as demonstrated by the CH acidity (in DMSO) of 3-isochromanone (p K a = 18.8) and 2-coumaranone (p K a = 13.5), which is higher than that of ethyl phenylacetate (p K a = 22.6). Molecular interactions are crucial to stabilize amorphous drugs in amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs). Most polymers, however, have only a limited ability to form strong molecular interactions with drugs. Polymers tailored to fit the physicochemical properties of the drug molecule to be incorporated, for instance by allowing the incorporation of specific functional groups, would be highly sought-for in this regard. For this purpose, the novel allyl-terminated polymer methoxy(polyethylene glycol)-block-poly(jasmine lactone) (mPEG-b-PJL) has been synthesized and functionalized to potentially enhance specific drug-polymer interactions...

The present research is focused on the proposal of use of flow-modulation comprehensive two-dimensional enantio-gas chromatography (FM eGC × GC) as a valid, flexible, and possibly superior alternative to heart-cutting multidimensional enantio-GC (eMDGC). The latter, a technique of demonstrated utility, is used specifically for the targeted separation of chiral compounds, whereas FM eGC × GC can produce both targeted and high-resolution untargeted information in a single run. It is clearly possible to use eMDGC for untargeted analysis, often with a flame ionization detector (stand-by analysis), to monitor a first-dimension (1 D) separation, of much lower peak capacity compared to FM eGC × GC...
