PURPOSE: Determine whether reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) glenoid baseplate tilt is influenced by surgical approach and/or associated with functional scores. METHODS: In total, 501 shoulders (483 patients) who underwent RSA, by anterosuperior (AS, n = 88) or deltopectoral (DP, n = 413) approach. Preoperative and immediate postoperative anteroposterior and scapular Y-view radiographs were used to measure: Inclination of the supraspinatus fossa's floor relative to the horizontal (Sigma angle), inclination of the glenoid fossa line (or glenoid baseplate surface) relative to the horizontal (beta-h angle) or to the supraspinatus fossa's floor (beta-s angle)...

Inferior scapula avulsion fractures are rare injuries, with few cases reported and only a small number managed operatively discussed in the literature. We report the case of a man in his 40s who fell from a height and presented with right-sided scapular winging and point tenderness at the inferior pole of his right scapula with no neurological deficit. Radiographs and CT diagnosed avulsion fracture of the inferior scapula. The patient underwent surgical fixation and, following a course of physiotherapy, successfully recovered with no residual winging and full range of movement...

The axillary artery is the primary arterial supply of the upper limb and functions as a key landmark in the region of the axilla. Anatomical variations in the axillary artery may arise from abnormal angiogenesis in the upper limb bud during embryological development. The routine dissection of the upper limb of an 88-year-old male cadaver revealed unilateral variations in the left axillary artery, including an abnormal anteromedial course with respect to the divisions and cords of the brachial plexus, while no variations were observed in the right axillary artery...

INTRODUCTION: Glenoid bone loss is a known challenge in primary and revision reverse total shoulder arthroplasty. In severe deficiency, even placing the baseplate in alternative centerline or using an augmented baseplate may be insufficient. This study reports on the use of a soft tissue resurfacing technique using Achilles tendon allograft, coined Yoke procedure, for salvage treatment of glenoid deficient shoulder requiring reconstruction. MATERIALS & METHODS: All patients who underwent the Yoke procedure between 2014 and 2020 by a single surgeon at a single academic center were identified and had their charts retrospectively reviewed...

Osteochondromas are benign bone tumors that occur only rarely in the scapula. We report a case of an eight-year-old boy with dorsal scapular osteochondroma that initially presented as middle back pain, scoliosis, and a winged scapula. Unlike in most reported cases, the patient did not report severe pain. The chiropractor reviewed his previous radiograph and ordered a computed tomography scan, which revealed a bony mass on the dorsal aspect of the left scapula consistent with an osteochondroma. Given the patient's age and lack of symptoms, a conservative chiropractic treatment plan, focusing on posture, flexibility, and close monitoring, was adopted...

Locked shoulder dislocations account for up to 5% of shoulder dislocations. These relatively rare injuries are characterized by dislocation of the humeral head from the scapular glenoid cavity with the humeral head incarcerated on the glenoid in a "locked" fashion. Diagnosis is often delayed because of the complexity of clinical presentation and subtle radiographic findings, resulting in locking of the humeral head out of the glenoid cavity with severe functional deficits. Most commonly, there are bony injuries to the glenoid and humeral head that engage and prevent closed reduction...

INTRODUCTION: Bilateral scapular fractures are a very rare injury with only few cases reported in the literature. They are said to be consequence of a violent trauma to the upper part of shoulder or as a result of electrocution or seizures. Glenoid involvement or open scapular fractures are one of the indications for operative treatment in these injuries, in other cases, simple immobilization is sufficient to obtain good results. Here, we report a case of a bilateral scapular fracture following an epileptic seizure, discussing the mechanism and outcome of conservative treatment...

CASE SUMMARY: A 15-year-old male castrated domestic shorthair cat originally presented to its primary care veterinarian with a chief complaint of a multi-month history of decreased appetite, weight loss and mild weight-bearing lameness. On physical examination, over the right scapula there was mild-to-moderate muscle wasting and a palpable firm, bony mass measuring approximately 3.5 cm × 3 cm. A complete blood count, chemistry panel, urinalysis, urine culture and baseline thyroxine were clinically unremarkable...

Pseudo-pneumothorax refers to several conditions that can mimic pneumothorax on chest radiography, leading to diagnostic uncertainty and unnecessary interventions. These include skin folds, bed sheet folds, clothes, scapular borders, pleural cysts, and elevated hemidiaphragm. We report a case of a 64-year-old patient with pneumonia whose chest radiograph revealed, in addition to the typical pneumonia findings, what appeared similar to bilateral pleural lines raising the suspicion of bilateral pneumothorax, but this finding was not supported clinically...

The scapulothoracic, acromioclavicular and sternoclavicular joints play a fundamental role in the shoulder function. Shoulder complex kinematics have been studied with different methods using: goniometers, 2 static radiographs, 3D motion analyzers (invasive or noninvasive) and digital inclinometers. Goniometers have been used traditionally to assess scapular rotation in relation to the thorax. The intrinsic limit of multiple static two-dimensional shoulder radiographs is the attempt of describing in two what is occurring in three dimensions...

BACKGROUND: Scapulothoracic orientation, especially scapular internal rotation (SIR) may influence range of motion in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) and is subjected to body posture. Clinical measurements of SIR rely on apical bony landmarks, which depend on changes in scapulothoracic orientation, while radiographic measurements are often limited by the restricted field of view (FOV) in CT scans. Therefore, the goal of this study was (1) to determine whether the use of CT scans with a limited FOV to measure SIR is reliable and (2) if a clinical measurement could be a valuable alternative...

PURPOSE: Scapular fractures are uncommon and mainly treated nonoperatively. Judet's posterior approach allows access to the fracture site through the infraspinatus fossa and may be a technical option when ORIF is decided. The aims of this study were to determine clinical and radiographic outcomes of patients who underwent scapular body and/or glenoid fractures fixation via Judet's posterior approach. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective single-centre study, and all patients admitted for scapular fracture who underwent osteosynthesis via Judet's approach between January 2014 and September 2021 were included...
