INTRODUCTION: Empagliflozin is a sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitor used to treat type 2 diabetes (T2D) to improve glycemic control, reduce risk of cardiovascular death in patients with T2D, and treat patients with symptomatic chronic heart failure (HF) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). The safety profile of empagliflozin is well documented, although adverse events (AEs) remain of interest to clinicians. This study provides an up-to-date safety evaluation of empagliflozin. METHODS: Data were pooled from four long-term trials which included: patients with T2D and established cardiovascular disease (EMPA-REG OUTCOME), patients with HF, with/without diabetes (EMPEROR-Reduced and EMPEROR-Preserved), and patients with CKD, with/without diabetes (EMPA-KIDNEY)...

BACKGROUND: according to the International Agency for Cancer Research on Cancer, in 2022, breast cancer is the most common cancer in the Italian population, followed by colorectal cancer. Oncological screenings represent an effective secondary prevention strategy to counteract colorectal and breast cancers, significantly reducing mortality. In Lombardy Region (Northern Italy), screening programmes have been active since 2007, but adherence, especially in specific population subgroups, remains lower than expected...

BACKGROUND: The aim was to analyze the correlation between serum microRNA (miR)-18a level, endothelial function, and prognosis in female coronary heart disease (CHD) patients. METHODS: One hundred sixtyfemale patients admitted to our hospital for the first occurrences of chest pain and tightness were divided into CHD and non-CHD groups based on the coronary angiography results. Clinical data, laboratory indexes, serum miR-18a level, and endothelial function [flow-mediated dilation (FMD) function, endothelin 1 (ET-1), and nitric oxide (NO)] were compared...

OBJECTIVE: Patients with moderate aortic stenosis (AS) exhibit high morbidity and mortality. Limited evidence exists on the role of aortic valve replacement (AVR) in this patient population. To investigate the benefit of AVR in moderate AS on survival and left ventricular function. METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study, patients with moderate AS between 2008 and 2016 were selected from the Cleveland Clinic echocardiography database and followed until 2018. Patients were classified as receiving AVR or managed medically (clinical surveillance)...

CONTEXT: Sex and gender are related concepts, but they have distinct meanings and implications. Respiratory diseases are a major driver of morbi-mortality. It is frequent that respirologists, primary care doctors, or other specialists, when dealing with respiratory patients, and aiming for a holistic management of their patients, they all skip any question or matter associated with sexual activity or behavior. OBJECTIVES: To review how sexual activity is explored in respiratory patients...

UNLABELLED: Longitudinal dyssynchrony correction and strain improvement by comparable cardiac resynchronization therapy techniques is unreported. AIMS: Our purpose was to compare echocardiographic dyssynchrony correction and strain improvement by conduction system pacing (CSP) vs. biventricular pacing (BiVP) as a marker of contractility improvement during one-year follow-up. METHODS AND RESULTS: A treatment-received analysis was performed in patients included in the LEVEL-AT trial (NCT04054895), randomized to CSP or BiVP, and evaluated at baseline (ON and OFF programming) and at 6 and 12 months (n = 69, 32% women)...

PURPOSE: We investigated whether longitudinally assessed physical activity (PA) and adherence specifically to World Health Organization PA guidelines mitigates or moderates mortality risk regardless of genetic liability to cardiovascular disease (CVD). We also estimated the causality of the PA-mortality association. METHODS: The study used the older Finnish Twin Cohort (FTC) with 4,897 participants aged 33-60 years (54.3% women). Genetic liability to coronary heart disease, systolic and diastolic blood pressure was estimated with polygenic risk scores (PRSs) derived from the Pan-UK Biobank (N ≈ 400,000; > 1,000,000 genetic variants)...

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection is becoming an important cause of acute coronary syndrome, particularly among young women. Its association with female gender, pregnancy, and postpartum period and emotional stress differentiate it from atherosclerotic heart disease. In recent years, there has been more awareness and improved diagnostic and management capabilities, which in turn has increased the diagnostic yield, although knowledge gaps remain. In the present case, a 36-year-old female, who was at 1-month postpartum period, presented with ventricular fibrillation and cardiac arrest...

Our center has observed a substantial increase in the detection rate of fetal left-right(LR) asymmetry disorders between March and May 2023. This finding has raised concerns because these pregnant women experienced the peak outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 in China during their first trimester. To explore the relationship between maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection and fetal LR asymmetry disorders. A retrospective collection of clinical and ultrasound data diagnosed as fetal LR asymmetry disorders was conducted from January 2018 to December 2023...

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is the strongest risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and although glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels are known to vary by race, no racial and ethnic-specific diagnostic thresholds exist for diabetes in prediction of cardiovascular disease events. The purpose of this study is to determine whether HbA1c thresholds for predicting major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) differ among racial and ethnic groups.
