Chromium (Cr) leached from iron (Fe) (oxyhydr)oxide-rich tropical laterites can substantially impact downstream groundwater, ecosystems, and human health. However, its partitioning into mineral hosts, its binding, oxidation state, and potential release are poorly defined. This is in part due to the current lack of well-designed and validated Cr-specific sequential extraction procedures (SEPs) for laterites. To fill this gap, we have (i) first optimized a Cr SEP for Fe (oxyhydr)oxide-rich laterites using synthetic and natural Cr-bearing minerals and laterite references, (ii) used a complementary suite of techniques and critically evaluated existing non-laterite and non-Cr-optimized SEPs, compared to our optimized SEP, and (iii) confirmed the efficiency of our new SEP through analyses of laterites from the Philippines...

Lead (Pb), a heavy metal environmental pollutant, poses a threat to the health of humans and birds. Inflammation is one of the most common pathological phenomena in the case of illness and poisoning. However, the underlying mechanisms of inflammation remain unclear. The cerebellum and the thalamus are important parts of the nervous system. To date, there have been no reports of Pb inducing inflammation in animal cerebellums or thalami. Selenium (Se) can relieve Pb poisoning. Therefore, we aimed to explore the mechanism by which Se alleviates Pb toxicity to the cerebellums and thalami of chickens by establishing a chicken Pb or/and Se treatment model...

The reusability of by-products in the food industry is consistent with sustainable and greener production; therefore, the aim of this paper was to evaluate the applicability of multiple linear regression (MLR), piecewise linear regression (PLR) and artificial neural network models (ANN) to the prediction of grape-skin compost's physicochemical properties (moisture, dry matter, organic matter, ash content, carbon content, nitrogen content, C/N ratio, total colour change of compost samples, pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids and total colour change of compost extract samples) during in-vessel composting based on the initial composting conditions (air-flow rate, moisture content and day of sampling)...

Electric cars are desirable for their environmental and economic benefits yet face limitations in range in cold weather due to the increased energy demands for cabin heating. To provide efficient heating for vehicles, flexible composite electrothermal heaters offer a viable solution owing to their lightweight design, efficiency, and adaptability for use within and beyond vehicle interiors. The current study aims to improve electrothermal heater stability and performance by understanding the impact of the polymer structure on composite properties...

Ulotaront (SEP-363856) is a TAAR1 agonist, with 5-HT1A agonist activity, currently in clinical development for the treatment of schizophrenia. In vitro studies indicate ulotaront is an OCT2-specific inhibitor with IC50 of 1.27 μM. The primary objective of this study is to determine if a single dose of ulotaront affects the PK of metformin, an index substrate of OCT2, in subjects with schizophrenia. In a randomized, single-blind, 2-period crossover study, 25 adults with schizophrenia received a single dose of metformin-HCl 850 mg (approximately 663 mg metformin) with and without coadministration of 100 mg ulotaront...

BACKGROUND: Determining oxacillin susceptibility using reference methods and automated systems is crucial for treating invasive infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus . This study compares the oxacillin susceptibility results from the two automated systems with agar dilution and correlates them with genotypes of invasive S. aureus . METHODS: Non-duplicate S. aureus invasive isolates were collected over an 11-year period. The oxacillin susceptibility was determined with Phoenix 100 (Jan 2011 to Aug 2018) or Vitek 2 (Sep 2018 to Dec 2021), and susceptibility for oxacillin and cefoxitin was determined with agar dilution...

BACKGROUND: This study investigated real-world time on treatment (rwToT) and overall survival (OS) for patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (mNSCLC) who initiated first-line (1L) pembrolizumab monotherapy. We also explored discontinuation reasons and subsequent treatments, stratified by number of cycles among those who completed ≥17 cycles of 1L pembrolizumab. METHODS: Patients with mNSCLC without actionable genetic aberrations, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG PS) 0-2 and unknown, and PD-L1 TPS ≥ 50% starting 1L pembrolizumab monotherapy between 24-Oct-2016 and 31-Dec-2018 within The US Oncology Network were identified retrospectively and evaluated using structured data, with a data cutoff of 30-Sep-2021...

We quantified the lifetime impact of CRC and its variation by SEP, using individualised income to conceptualise SEP. METHODS: Data included all adults with a first-time diagnosis of colon or rectal cancers in Sweden between 2008 and 2021. In the study of bodily-awareness, the Predictive Coding Theory has revealed that our brain continuously modulates sensory experiences to integrate them into a unitary body representation. Indeed, during multisensory illusions (e.g., the rubber hand illusion; RHI), the synchronous stroking of the participant's concealed hand and a fake visible one creates a visuo-tactile conflict, generating a prediction error. Within the Predictive Coding framework, through sensory processing modulation, prediction errors are solved, inducing participants to feel as if touches originated from the fake hand, thus ascribing the fake hand to their own body...

Since the pioneering electron counting rule for borane clusters was proposed by Wade, the structures and bonding of boron clusters and their derivatives have been elegantly rationalised. However, this rule and its modified versions faced problems explaining the electronic structures of less spherical deltahedra, unlike the core geometries of borate dianions [B n H n ]2- ( n = 6-12). Herein, we report the isolation of a series of osmaborane clusters [(Cp*Os)2 B n H n ], 1-5, ( n = 6-10) by the thermolysis of an in situ generated intermediate, obtained from the rapid condensation of [Cp*OsBr2 ]2 and [LiBH4 ·THF], with [BH3 ·THF] or [BH3 ·SMe2 ]...

Socioeconomic position (SEP) may have different effects on cognitive development and family context could play a role in this association. This work aimed to analyse the role of socioeconomic positions, measured via various indicators collected longitudinally, in cognitive development at 7-11 years of age, evaluating the role of family context as a potential mediator. The study sample included 394 and 382 children from the INMA Gipuzkoa and Valencia cohorts, respectively. SEP indicators were assessed during pregnancy (family social class, parental education, employment, and disposable income) and at 7 (Gipuzkoa) and 11 (Valencia) years of age (At Risk of Poverty or Social Exclusion (AROPE))...
