INTRODUCTION: Trophoblastic diseases correspond to a very heterogeneous group. OBJECTIVE: To establish the importance of imaging in the management of trophoblastic diseases. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective study from 1995 to 2008, including all patients with a gestational throphoblastic disease in our department. RESULTS: Seventy-four cases were identified with 58 molar pregnancies, 14 trophoblastic tumors and two cases of hydatiform mole coexistent with a twin live fetus...

A twin pregnancy is described consisting of a complete hydatiform mole (CHM) with coexisting healthy fetus. Pregnancy occurred after IVF-ICSI. The couple wished to continue the pregnancy and a decision to accept was taken after having consulted the available literature, but at 18 weeks gestation pregnancy termination was inevitable for severe vaginal bleeding. A rising HCG, 25 days after the curettage made methotrexate treatment necessary and 24 months later there is no evidence of disease.

A twin pregnancy with a coexisting complete hydatiform mole and a healthy fetus is rare. Associated with this condition are potentially serious maternal and fetal complications. We describe a case of a woman, 23/40 pregnant, who was diagnosed with a twin pregnancy complicated by a hydatiform mole, vaginal bleeding, hyperthyroidism and preterm labour at 26/40. Her hyperthyroidism was successfully treated with propylthiouracil. The preterm labour resulted in the livebirth of a healthy male infant. The baby developed biochemical hypothyroidism post-natally...

OBJECTIVE: To explore the role of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and tissue inhibitor of MMP-2 (TIMP-2) in the pathogenesis, development and prognosis of gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD). METHODS: In situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry were utilized for MMP-2/TIMP-2 mRNA and protein detection in normal chorion of women with early gestation, hydatidiform mole, invasive mole, or choricarcinoma. RESULTS: The results revealed that specific staining for mRNA and protein of MMP-2 and the expression of TIMP-2 was reduced in normal chorion of early gestation...

The recurrent hydatiform mole is rare, its frequency is lower to 1%. We report the observation of a 28 years old women. without antecedents of molar pregnancy in the family and without considerable pathological antecedents. She had 9 successive molar pregnancies, without inset normal pregnancies and without living children. The delay of at least 1 year between the gestations has been respected in 6 pregnancies. The etiologic balance in particular the caryotypes of parents is normal. The authors debate the étiopathogénic and prognostic factors of this pathology...

AIM: Especially in the first weeks of pregnancy, complete and partial hydatiform moles are not easily detected by sonography, symptoms and clinical signs. Due to the rarity of moles, it is possible that they may be confused with abortive pregnancies until the pathological examination. The aim of this study is to identify the sensitivity, specificity, predictive positive and negative value of the main symptoms and clinical signs of molar pregnancies. METHODS: Thirteen molar pregnancies have been detected after pathological examination from January 2003 to July 2005 in Perugia...

Choriocarcinoma is a gestational trophoblastic tumour with a high metastatic potential but presentation with gastrointestinal haemorrhage due to jejunal mucosal metastasis is very rare. A 25-year-old Nepali woman presented with severe anaemia and massive gastrointestinal haemorrhage after normal pregnancy following evacuation of a hydatiform mole. During laparotomy, the patient was found to have extensive jejunal mucosal metastases.

INTRODUCTION: Gestational trophoblastic disease represents a variety of conditions that include hydatiform mole and choriocarcinoma. The common manifestation is high levels of beta human chorionic gonadotropin. In Mexico the incidence of the disease is 2.5 per 1,000 pregnancies. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective and descriptive analysis of patients with partial, complete or persistent hydatiform mole or choriocarcinoma diagnosis made from January 1988 to December 2003...

INTRODUCTION: Histopathologic analysis of aborted tissue in molar pregnancy is frequently complicated by scarcity of tissue as well as by the fact that ultrasound and biochemistry permit the clinical diagnosis of gestational trophoblastic disease at the very beginning of pregnancy, when all classical morphologic features have not yet developed. Flow cytometry is today a widely used method that can help the pathologist reach a correct diagnosis, having implications for the patient. AIM: To show the role of flow cytometry in addition to classical histopathologic methods in the early diagnosis of gestational trophoblastic disease, i...

OBJECTIVE: To assess the potential clinical utility of in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) in patients with various endometrial lesions. METHODS: Twelve patients with untreated uterine bleeding were included in this study. In-vivo proton MRS was performed using a 1.5 T MR scanner. The metabolite levels were classified into three classes in comparison with the noise level by visual examination. All the patients have endometrial biopsy. For each type of lesions, chemical compound were described...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to highlight the outcome of complete hydatidiform mole (CHM) coexisting with a live co-twin. METHODS: We investigated four cases of such pregnancy by ultrasound, pathological, cytogenetic, and molecular techniques. Information on clinical follow-up and outcome was also available. RESULTS: All four pregnancies were spontaneous: two ended with the delivery of a live-born baby, while the other two were terminated because of signs of serious maternal pathology or intrauterine fetal death...

Hydatiform mole is a gestational trophoblastic disease characterized by the dominance of dispermic fertilization. Micromanipulation techniques in assisted reproduction technologies have enabled direct evaluation of the zygotes and the formation of pronuclei in the zygote. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) of oocytes ensures that only a single spermatozoon enters the ooplasma. This study reports a case of partial hydatiform mole following the transfer of day 3 frozen-thawed embryo. ICSI was used as the assisted fertilization method because there was male factor infertility due to severe oligoasthenoteratozoospermia...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association, if any, between serum concentrations of folate, vitamin B12 and homocysteine in complete hydatiform mole (CHM). STUDY DESIGN: Blood samples were taken from 37 women with CHM and 52 healthy controls in the first trimester of pregnancy. Serum was analyzed for folate, vitamin B12 and homocysteine using electrochemiluminescence and chemiluminescence assay. RESULTS: In patients with CHM, significantly higher mean levels of serum vitamin B12 were encountered (247...

Seventy-two patients with gestational trophoblastic tumors (GTTs) and 20 first-trimester healthy pregnant women (controls) participated in this study. According to the WHO scoring system, GTTs were subgrouped into 24 hydatiform mole spontaneous regression (HMSR), 18 postmolar high-risk (PMHR) and 16 low- and 14 high-risk cases of choriocarcinoma. Patients with choriocarcinoma were treated with hysterectomy and methotrexate chemotherapy, whereas molar pregnancy was managed by either oxytocin infusion followed by suction evacuation or by hysterectomy...
