Fluorophores displaying concentration-dependent luminescence are becoming increasingly valuable in stress-sensing, tagging, and dyeing applications, including the quantification of recycled content in plastic packaging. In this work, we investigate the effects of the polymer matrix, dye structure, and crystallinity on aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE). We demonstrate that the aggregation threshold required for successful quantification can be adjusted through modulation of guest-host (dye-polymer) interactions and monitored using an array of fluorescence characterization...

Slow-releasing carbohydrates may delay the effects of fatigue after exhaustive exercise. The purpose of this study was to observe the influence that hydrothermally modified starches (HMS) and traditional maltodextrin (MAL) supplements had on physical endurance and mental performance following exhaustive exercise. Male participants completed a VO2 max and 2 days of cycling sessions using a Velotron ergometer. Cycling sessions were performed at 70% of the VO2 max workload for 150 min. Supplements were consumed 30 min before cycling and during exercise at the 120-min mark (1 g CHO/kg body weight)...

BACKGROUND: The transition from childhood to adolescence is associated with an increase in rates of some psychiatric disorders, including major depressive disorder, a debilitating mood disorder. The aim of this systematic review is to update the evidence on the benefits and harms of screening for depression in primary care and non-mental health clinic settings among children and adolescents. METHODS: This review is an update of a previous systematic review, for which the last search was conducted in 2017...

Viruses from a new species of piscichuvirus were strongly associated with severe lymphocytic meningoencephalomyelitis in several free-ranging aquatic turtles from 3 coastal US states during 2009-2021. Sequencing identified 2 variants (freshwater turtle neural virus 1 [FTuNV1] and sea turtle neural virus 1 [STuNV1]) of the new piscichuvirus species in 3 turtles of 3 species. In situ hybridization localized viral mRNA to the inflamed region of the central nervous system in all 3 sequenced isolates and in 2 of 3 additional nonsequenced isolates...

Introduction: Peroneal disorders are a common cause of ankle pain and lateral instability and have been described in as much as 77% of patients with lateral ankle instability. Clicking, swelling, pain, and tenderness in the peroneal tendons track are frequent symptoms, but they can be confused with other causes of lateral ankle pain. The management of peroneal disorders can be conservative or surgical. When the conservative treatment fails, surgery is indicated, and open or tendoscopic synovectomy, tubularization, tenodesis or tendon transfers can be performed...

BACKGROUND: Lowering the exit position of the tibial tunnel can improve the clinical efficacy of posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) reconstruction, however, there is no unified positioning standard. This study aimed to use novel soft tissue landmarks to create a low tunnel. METHODS: A total of 14 human cadaveric knees and 12 patients with PCL injury were included in this study. Firstly, we observed the anatomical position between the PCL, posterior septum, and other tissue, and evaluated the relationship between the center of the low tibial tunnel (SP tunnel) and posterior septum and distal reflection of posterior capsule, and using computed tomography (CT) to evaluate distance between the center of the SP tunnel with bony landmarks...

Ectoparasite infestations negatively affect both backyard and commercial chicken flocks in the United States. Fluralaner is an isoxazoline shown to be efficacious in treating mite and bed bug infestations in poultry. Fluralaner is approved to treat fleas and ticks in dogs and cats in the United States and to treat mite infestations of chickens in Europe and Australia; however, the use of fluralaner in poultry is not yet approved in the United States. This study aimed to investigate the plasma fluralaner pharmacokinetic profile of intravenous and transdermal routes and apparent bioavailability of fluralaner administered trans-dermally in healthy shaver hens...

PURPOSE: Hypoxemia during a failed airway scenario is life threatening. A dual-lumen pharyngeal oxygen delivery device (PODD) was developed to fit inside a traditional oropharyngeal airway for undisrupted supraglottic oxygenation and gas analysis during laryngoscopy and intubation. We hypothesized that the PODD would provide oxygen as effectively as high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) while using lower oxygen flow rates. METHODS: We compared oxygen delivery of the PODD to HFNC in a preoxygenated, apneic manikin lung that approximated an adult functional residual capacity...

The human lung is structurally complex, with a diversity of specialized epithelial, stromal and immune cells playing specific functional roles in anatomically distinct locations, and large-scale changes in the structure and cellular makeup of this distal lung is a hallmark of pulmonary fibrosis (PF) and other progressive chronic lung diseases. Single-cell transcriptomic studies have revealed numerous disease-emergent/enriched cell types/states in PF lungs, but the spatial contexts wherein these cells contribute to disease pathogenesis has remained uncertain...

Over the past decade, advanced analytical techniques have been utilized to examine volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in eggs. Non-native species are expanding globally and can alter ecosystem functions, including food web dynamics, community structure and carbon storage. Seagrass are foundation species that contribute a variety of ecosystem services in near-shore coastal ecosystems, including a significant sink of carbon. In the Caribbean, the rapidly expanding non-native Halophila stipulacea has unknown impacts on carbon storage. To investigate the impacts on carbon storage, we quantified organic carbon (Corg ) content in sediment and seagrass tissues from monotypic H...

The genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) has been proposed as a diagnosis by a consensus of clinicians and investigators. Our purpose for this paper is to review extant evidence about: 1) the breadth of symptoms and symptom clusters as related to the syndrome; 2) the prevalence of GSM (includes vulvar and vaginal atrophy); 3) factors that are associated with, predict, or explain the syndrome; and 4) what should be pursued for expanding meaningful evidence. Within recent literature, we found a wide range of prevalence estimates, likely a function of the differing populations studied, study design, and methods of data collection...

The practice of monitoring therapeutic drug concentrations in patient biofluids can significantly improve clinical outcomes while simultaneously minimizing adverse side effects. A model example of this practice is vancomycin dosing in intensive care units. If dosed correctly, vancomycin can effectively treat methicillin-resistant streptococcus aureus (MRSA) infections. However, it can also induce nephrotoxicity or fail to kill the bacteria if dosed too high or too low, respectively. Although undeniably important to achieve effectiveness, therapeutic drug monitoring remains inconvenient in practice due primarily to the lengthy process of sample collection, transport to a centralized facility, and analysis using costly instrumentation...
