Colonic diverticula develop at specific weak spots, where the vasa recta enter the colonic circular smooth muscle layer.1 They are usually seen in the left colon. Their most common complication is diverticulitis, with mild cases resolving even without antibiotic therapy.2 Right-side diverticulitis develops in only 1.5% of cases, primarily on the anterior aspect of the cecum, proximal to the ileocecal valve (80%).4 Given its low incidence, location, and the fact that it involves younger patients, a differential diagnosis is needed to rule out abdominal inflammatory conditions such as appendicitis or ileitis, as well as gynecological disorders...

BACKGROUND: The advances of minimally invasive endoscopy-guided procedures that usually yield limited diagnostic material changed pancreaticobiliary cytopathology into one of the most challenging areas of Cytopathology given the abundance of differential diagnoses to be considered when dealing with limited specimens. SUMMARY: We describes a few challenging, examples of potential pitfalls in pancreatobiliary cytopathology evaluation collected from a busy academic hospital (tertiary) center...

BACKGROUND: Despite evidence that ambulatory surgery is safe with faster recovery compared to in-patient hospitalization, surgeons in low- and middle-income countries like Uganda have been hesitant to embrace this practice. Kyabirwa Surgical Center (KSC) is the first freestanding ambulatory surgery center (ASC) in rural Uganda. We aim to report the impact of a rural ASC since its establishment, in alleviating surgically-treatable morbidity within its catchment area. METHODS: KSC is located in Jinja, Uganda...

BACKGROUND: The benefits of intraoperative recording are well published in the literature; however, few studies have identified current practices, barriers, and subsequent solutions. The objective of this study was to better understand surgeon's current practices and perceptions of video management and gather blinded feedback on a new surgical video recording product with the potential to address these barriers effectively. METHODS: A structured questionnaire was used to survey 230 surgeons (general, gynecologic, and urologic) and hospital administrators across the US and Europe regarding their current video recording practices...

Accurate diagnosis of Müllerian duct anomalies (MDA) remains a clinical challenge even by direct surgical inspection. Although obstetrical complications are more frequent in women with MDA, some subtypes allow normal reproduction, further delaying the diagnosis. Unicornuate uterus with a rudimentary non-communicating functioning horn is a rare form of MDA, susceptible to many gynecologic and obstetric complications such as miscarriages, premature birth, hematosalpinx, endometriosis, and chronic pelvic pain...

Introduction:The diagnostic value of rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) in bronchoscopy for lung tumors has been widely researched. However, the diagnostic efficacy of ROSE for pulmonary tuberculosis has not been extensively assessed yet. This study aimed to examine the value of ROSE in diagnosing pulmonary tuberculosis during bronchoscopy, and the relationship between ROSE cytology patterns and acid-fast bacilli (AFB) smears and mycobacterial cultures. Methods:A retrospective study was conducted at a single respiratory endoscopy centre, including 418 patients under clinical or radiological suspicion of having pulmonary tuberculosis who underwent bronchoscopy...

BACKGROUND: Subcutaneous emphysema (SCE) is a common complication in laparoscopic surgery. However, its precise incidence and impact on the clinical course are partially known. In this study, the incidence and risk factors of SCE were retrospectively analyzed. METHODS: Patients who underwent laparoscopic/robotic abdominal surgery (e.g., gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, gynecologic, and urologic surgery) between October 2019 and September 2022 were retrospectively analyzed...

A 9-year-old Thoroughbred mare with normal external genitalia and regular oestrus symptoms was gynecologically examined prior to insemination. This primary examination revealed the presence of a hypoplastic uterus and the lack of normal ovaries, and the mare was therefore subjected to more detailed diagnostics, including endocrinological, genetic, and clinical tests. Diagnostic imaging with the use of ultrasonography and endoscopy confirmed the underdevelopment of internal genitalia. Analysis of circulating sex hormones revealed very low concentrations of progesterone and oestradiol...

A woman in her 70s with a medical history of recurrent ovarian carcinoma was referred to the gastroenterologist because of rectal blood loss. Colonoscopy revealed a spontaneously bleeding lesion, which was not a typical colorectal carcinoma by optical diagnosis. Biopsies confirmed the diagnosis of recurrence of the former ovarian carcinoma. The patient was not eligible for surgical resection due to former abdominal surgery and she declined chemotherapy due to severe side effects earlier. After a multidisciplinary team consultation, she was treated with endoscopic full-thickness resection (eFTR)...

In the last 50 years, the number of companies producing automated devices for surgical operations has grown extensively. The population started to be more confident about the technology capabilities. The first patents related to surgical robotics are expiring and this knowledge is becoming a common base for the development of future surgical robotics. The review describes some of the most popular companies manufacturing surgical robots. The list of the company does not pretend to be exhaustive but wishes to give an overview of the sector...

The aim of this study is to compare and understand the clinicopathological characteristics of patients with mucinous ovarian cancer, report on the survival rates and evaluate the role of gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy as part of the peri-operative investigations and the impact it has on the survival rates. INTRODUCTION: OHVIRA syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly of Müllerian duct development characterized by uterine didelphys, obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal agenesis. The primary treatment is surgical excision of the obstructed hemivaginal septum and hematometrial drainage. In recent years, minimally invasive approaches such as hysteroscopic or vaginoscopic septum resection have been reported. Furthermore, we originally developed some novel pneumovaginoscopic gynecologic surgeries for years using a device that consists of a cylinder that fits into the vagina and a lid that mounts multiple ports, allowing the vagina to be dilated with carbon dioxide gas, similar to a single-port laparoscope...

BACKGROUND: Pelvic lymph node dissection is a procedure performed in gastroenterological surgery, urology, and gynecology. However, due to discrepancies in the understanding of pelvic anatomy among these departments, cross-disciplinary discussions have not been easy. Recently, with the rapid spread of robotic surgery, the importance of visual information in understanding pelvic anatomy has become even more significant. In this project, we attempted to clarify a shared understanding of pelvic anatomy through cross-disciplinary discussions...

vNOTES uses the vagina as the surgical channel for endoscopy and achieves improved cosmesis compared to conventional laparoscopy as there are no abdominal incisions. Ventrofixation of the uterus to the abdominal wall following previous cesarean sections further adds to the surgeon's concern of bladder injury. In such cases, a modification of the technique is proposed: introducing the vNOTES port first, before the opening of the vesico-uterine peritoneal folds, thus carried out under endoscopic view. Medial anterior vesico-uterine adhesions are identified and circumscribed by creating a lateral window in the broad ligament on both sides...
