Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and depression often coexist, resulting in a complex interaction that can be detrimental to patient outcomes. This article examines the reciprocal association between CKD and depression, with a focus on the increased incidence of depression and the harmful effects of depressive symptoms among patients with CKD. Next, it investigates the role CKD plays as a risk factor for the onset and worsening of depression because symptoms of depression may interfere with the progression of CKD...

Adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) tend to be extremely sedentary. We investigated the feasibility and acceptability of a sedentary-reducing intervention for adults with CKD. The intervention utilized telephone-delivered coaching and a consumer wearable device to support participants to reduce their sedentary time. The mean age of participants in the sample was 60.5 years; 72% were women, and 83% had CKD Stage 3. At baseline, participants spent 73% of their waking time sedentary. Inter vention phone call attendance was 100%, study retention was 82%, and the intervention was rated as enjoyable (9...

A large portion of new patients with end stage kidney disease initiates dialysis in the acute setting and continue with outpatient dialysis at in-center facilities. To increase home dialysis adoption, programs have successfully operationalized Urgent Start peritoneal dialysis to have patients avoid in-center dialysis and move straight to home. However, Urgent Start home hemodialysis (HHD) has not been a realistic option for providers or patients due to complex machines and long training times (greater than four weeks)...

BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a major contributor to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). About one-third of patients with ESKD due to AKI recover kidney function. However, the inability to accurately predict recovery leads to improper triage of clinical monitoring and impacts the quality of care in ESKD. METHODS: Using data from the United States Renal Data System from 2005 to 2014 ( n  = 22 922), we developed a clinical score to predict kidney recovery within 90 days and within 12 months after dialysis initiation in patients with ESKD due to AKI...

BACKGROUND: Preemptive kidney transplantation has better outcomes when compared to transplantation after dialysis. We aimed to examine trends in preemptive kidney transplantation between 2000 and 2019 in Europe and to provide an overview of associated policies, barriers and initiatives. METHODS: Adult patients from 12 European countries who received a preemptive kidney transplant were included. The representatives of the registries providing these data were questioned on the policies, barriers and initiatives around preemptive kidney transplantation...

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of contemporary data describing global variations in vascular access for hemodialysis (HD). We used the third iteration of the International Society of Nephrology Global Kidney Health Atlas (ISN-GKHA) to highlight differences in funding and availability of hemodialysis accesses used for initiating HD across world regions. METHODS: Survey questions were directed at understanding the funding modules for obtaining vascular access and types of accesses used to initiate dialysis...

Introduction : Chronic kidney disease and as a consequence end-stage kidney disease (EKSD) is increasing globally. More and more people across the world are requiring hemodialysis (HD). The HD procedure produces a large quantity of biomedical waste. In addition, HD consumes a large quantity of water. In this study, we estimated the waste generated from our government-funded HD unit. Materials and methods : It is a prospective study that was carried out in the dialysis unit in the nephrology department over a period of 1 year...

BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate the influencing factors of vascular calcification in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients and its relationship with long-term prognosis. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included chronic kidney disease patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis at the Peritoneal Dialysis Center of Beijing Luhu Hospital, Capital Medical University, from January 2019 to March 2019. Demographic and clinical laboratory data, including serum sclerostin (SOST), calcium (Ca), phosphate (P), serum albumin (ALB), and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) levels, were collected...

BACKGROUND: Multicenter early diuretic response (DR) analysis of single furosemide dosing following neonatal cardiac surgery is lacking to inform whether early DR predicts adverse clinical outcomes. BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Intradialytic-hypertension (IDH) is associated with increased risk for cardiovascular events and mortality. Patients with IDH exhibit higher 48-h blood pressure (BP) levels than patients without this condition. Volume and sodium excess are considered a major factor contributing in the development of this phenomenon. This study evaluated the effect of low (137mEq/L) compared to standard (140mEq/L) dialysate sodium concentration on 48-h BP in patients with IDH...
