Gaucher Disease (GD) is an inherited metabolic disorder caused by mutations in the GBA1 gene. It can manifest with severe neurodegeneration and visceral pathology. The most acute neuronopathic form (nGD), for which there are no curative therapeutic options, is characterised by devastating neuropathology and death during infancy. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic benefit of systemically delivered AAV9 vectors expressing the human GBA1 gene at two different doses comparing a neuronal-selective promoter with ubiquitous promoters...

Failure to close the abdomen after intestinal or multivisceral transplantation (Tx) remains a frequently occurring problem. Two attractive reconstruction methods, especially in large abdominal wall defects, are full-thickness abdominal wall vascularized composite allograft (AW-VCA) and nonvascularized rectus fascia (NVRF) Tx. This review compares surgical technique, immunology, integration, clinical experience, and indications of both techniques. In AW-VCA Tx, vascular anastomosis is required and the graft undergoes hypotrophy post-Tx...

Consensus remains elusive in the definition and indications of multivisceral transplantation (MVT) within the transplant community. MVT encompasses transplantation of all organs reliant on the celiac artery axis and the superior mesenteric artery in different combinations. Some institutions classify MVT as involving the grafting of the stomach or ascending colon in addition to the jejunoileal complex. MVT indications span a wide spectrum of conditions, including tumors, intestinal dysmotility disorders, and trauma...

Ornithologic study skins are specimens of avian skins that have been preserved by drying after removing the viscera and muscle. Because of the high value of study skins for scientific studies, specimens are shared among researchers. There is concern that study skins might be contaminated with high-consequence diseases such as highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) or Newcastle disease virus (NDV). To mitigate risk, thermal or chemical treatment of study skins may be required before transfer; however, such treatments might damage the specimens...

Constipation is common in the diseases of the digestive system in clinics. With the change in diet structure and the increase in life pressure, the prevalence rate increases year by year. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the location of the disease of constipation is in the large intestine, which is related to the dysfunction of lung, spleen, liver, kidney and other viscera. Its pathogenesis is conductive dysfunction of large intestine. Based on the theory, Shouhui Tongbian Capsule (SHTB) is composed of eight traditional Chinese medicines, including Polygoni multiflori Radix (Heshouwu in Chinese), Aloe (Luhui in Chinese), Cassiae Semen (Juemingzi in Chinese), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen in Chinese), Lycii Fructus (Gouqizi in Chinese), Asini Corii Colla (Ejiao in Chinese), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhishi in Chinese), and Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu in Chinese), which could help to release excessive turbid, and nourishing yin and supplementing qi in the treatment...

Cystic echinococcosis (CE), caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus, is a zoonotic parasitic disease that still represents a serious threat to human and animal health worldwide. The Mediterranean basin is recognized as one of the major hotspots of CE due to several factors, including the presence of diverse intermediate host species as well as socio-economic and cultural conditions of local communities. This study aims to take a closer look at epidemiological data on CE in the Mediterranean area and assess the knowledge attitudes and practices of shepherds towards this disease in four countries (Algeria, Greece, Italy and Tunisia), highly endemic for CE, with the final goal of identifying highly endemic risk areas and practices in use which might potentially allow the persistence of E...

Polypropylene (PP) mesh is the most widely used prosthetic material in hernia repair. However, the efficacy of implanted PP mesh is often compromised by adhesion between viscera and PP mesh. Thus, there is a recognized need for developing an anti-adhesive PP mesh. Here, a composite hydrogel coated PP mesh with the prevention of adhesion after hernia repair was designed. The composite hydrogel coating was prepared from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and hyaluronic acid (HA) by using the freezing-thawing (FT) method...

BACKGROUND: Observational studies have suggested a potential association between abdominal viscera volume and increased risk of stroke. However, the causal relationship remains unclear. This study aims to utilize Mendelian randomization (MR) to explore the genetic causal relationship between them. METHODS: We conducted MR analysis to study the causal effects of five abdominal viscera volumes on stroke. The genetic variations of abdominal viscera volume were obtained from the UK Biobank, and the summary data for stroke and ischemic stroke were acquired from the MEGASTROKE consortium...

Automated colorectal cancer (CRC) segmentation in medical imaging is the key to achieving automation of CRC detection, staging, and treatment response monitoring. Compared with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography colonography (CTC), conventional computed tomography (CT) has enormous potential because of its broad implementation, superiority for the hollow viscera (colon), and convenience without needing bowel preparation. However, the segmentation of CRC in conventional CT is more challenging due to the difficulties presenting with the unprepared bowel, such as distinguishing the colorectum from other structures with similar appearance and distinguishing the CRC from the contents of the colorectum...

Abstract A free-range organic broiler ( Gallus gallus domesticus ) premises in Staffordshire was infected by high pathogenicity avian influenza virus (HPAIV) H5N8 during the 2020-2021 epizootic in the United Kingdom (UK). Following initial confirmation of the infection in poultry, multiple wild bird species were seen scavenging on chicken carcasses. Detected dead wild birds were subsequently demonstrated to have been infected and succumbed to HPAIV H5N8. Initially, scavenging species, magpie ( Pica pica ) and raven ( Corvus corax ), were found dead on the premises but over the following days, buzzards ( Buteo buteo ) were also found dead within the local area with positive detection of HPAIV in submitted carcasses...
