OBJECTIVE: Landmark arteries during endoscopic sinus surgery are currently identified on the basis of anatomy, CT imaging and navigation, and Doppler flowmetry. However, the advantage of intraoperative fluorescence imaging during endoscopic sinus surgery has not been demonstrated. This study aimed to investigate whether Indocyanine Green (ICG) is useful for visualizing landmark arteries during endoscopic sinus and skull base surgery. METHODS: Eight patients who underwent endoscopic sinus and pituitary surgeries and consented to study participation were included...

BackgroundAntimicrobial resistance to mupirocin and fusidic acid, which are used for treatment of skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, is of concern.AimTo investigate resistance to fusidic acid and mupirocin in meticillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) from community-acquired skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) in Belgium.MethodsWe collected 2013-2023 data on fusidic acid and mupirocin resistance in SSTI-associated MSSA from two large Belgian laboratories. Resistant MSSA isolates sent to the Belgian Staphylococci Reference Centre were spa -typed and analysed for the presence of the eta and etb virulence genes and the mupA resistance gene...

The demand for identification of maize varieties has increased dramatically due to the phenomenon of mixed seeds and inferior varieties pretending to be high-quality varieties continuing to occur. It is urgent to solve the problem of efficient and accurate identification of maize varieties. A hyperspectral image acquisition system was used to acquire images of maize seeds. Regions of interest (ROI) with an embryo size of 10 × 10 pixel were extracted, and the average spectral information in the range of 949...

In view of two key deficiencies of failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) in crane operation hazard risk assessment-information loss and hazard grade lack, a crane operation hazard risk assessment model based on the Z-number and set pair analysis (Z-SPA) is proposed. In this research, the Z-number is used to address the information uncertainty. To reduce the risk losing evaluation information in the conversion of the Z-number into a crisp number, it is translated into an interval number. In this assessment model, the grades of crane operation hazards are determined using grade discrimination rules and a score function of a connection number based on set pair analysis...

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Staphylococcus aureus is a pressing public health challenge with significant implications for the dairy industry, encompassing bovine mastitis concerns and potential zoonotic threats. To delve deeper into the resistance mechanisms of S. aureus , this study employed a hybrid whole genome assembly approach that synergized the precision of Illumina with the continuity of Oxford Nanopore. A total of 62 isolates, collected from multiple sources from Vermont dairy farms, were sequenced using the GridION Oxford Nanopore R9...

Understanding the functional connectivity between brain regions and its emergent dynamics is a central challenge. Here we present a theory-experiment hybrid approach involving iteration between a minimal computational model and in vivo electrophysiological measurements. Our model not only predicted spontaneous persistent activity (SPA) during Up-Down-State oscillations, but also inactivity (SPI), which has never been reported. These were confirmed in vivo in the membrane potential of neurons, especially from layer 3 of the medial and lateral entorhinal cortices...

BACKGROUND: The human gut microbiome (GM) is involved in inflammation and immune response regulation. Dysbiosis, an imbalance in this ecosystem, facilitates pathogenic invasion, disrupts immune equilibrium, and potentially triggers diseases including various human leucocyte antigen (HLA)-B27-associated autoinflammatory and autoimmune diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and spondyloarthropathy (SpA). This study assesses compositional and functional alterations of the GM in patients with HLA-B27-associated non-infectious anterior uveitis (AU) compared to healthy controls...

Enthesitis is a characteristic manifestation of spondyloarthropathy (SpA). Historically, Behçet's syndrome (BS) was classified within SpA. Although they are now classified separately, the association between BS and SpA remains controversial. The concept of MHC-I (major histocompatibility complex class I)-opathy has been proposed based on the overlap in immunopathological mechanisms among diseases associated with human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I. Enthesitis is a frequent complication in patients with BS who also have acne and arthritis...

Endogenous stem cell-driven in situ bone tissue formation has recently garnered increasing attention. Therefore, our study sought to refine methods to enhance the migration and subsequent osteogenic differentiation of these cells. Our innovative approach involves using an injectable hydrogel that combines click cross-linking sites and a BMP-2 mimetic peptide (BP) with hyaluronic acid (HA). This injectable formulation, hereinafter referred to as SPa + Cx-HA-BP, incorporates a substance P analog peptide (SPa) with Cx-HA-BP, proving versatile for in vitro and in vivo applications without cytotoxicity...

In plant species, anthocyanin accumulation is specifically regulated by light signaling. Although the CONSTITUTIVELY PHOTOMORPHOGENIC1/SUPPRESSOR OF PHYA-105 (COP1/SPA) complex is known to control anthocyanin biosynthesis in response to light, the precise mechanism underlying this process remains largely unknown. Here, we report that Increase in BONSAI Methylation 1 (IBM1), a JmjC domain-containing histone demethylase, participates in the regulation of light-induced anthocyanin biosynthesis in Arabidopsis. The expression of IBM1 was induced by high light (HL) stress, and loss-of-function mutations in IBM1 led to accelerated anthocyanin accumulation under HL conditions...

Staphylococcus aureus is one of the primary pathogenic agents found in cheeses produced with raw milk. Some strains of S. aureus are enterotoxigenic, possessing the ability to produce toxins responsible for staphylococcal food poisoning when present in contaminated foods. This study aimed to genotypically characterize, assess the antimicrobial resistance profile, and examine the enterotoxigenic potential of strains of S. aureus isolated from artisanal colonial cheese. Additionally, a bacterial diversity assessment in the cheeses was conducted by sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene...

We tested whether spontaneous physical activity (SPA) from accelerometers could be used in a whole-room calorimeter to estimate thermic effect of food (TEF). Eleven healthy participants (63% female; age: 27 ± 4 years; body mass index: 22.8 ± 2.6 kg/m2 ) completed two 23-hour visits in randomized order: one 'fed' with meals provided and one 'fasted' with no food. SPA was measured by ActivPAL and Actigraph accelerometers. Measured TEF was calculated as the difference in total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) between fed and fasted visits and compared to three methods of estimating TEF: 1) SPA-adjusted TEF (adjTEF)-difference in TDEE without SPA between visits, 2) Wakeful TEF-difference in energy expenditure obtained from linear regression and basal metabolic rate during waking hours, 3) 24h TEF-increase in TDEE above SPA and sleeping metabolic rate...
