BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC) is a prevalent type of malignant gastrointestinal tumor. Many studies have shown that CENPE acts as an oncogene in some cancers. However, its expression level and clinical value in GC are not clear. METHODS: Obtaining clinical data information on gastric adenocarcinoma from TCGA and GEO databases. The gene expression profiling interaction analysis (GEPIA) was used to evaluate the relationship between prognosis and CENPE expression in gastric cancer patients...

Toxic leukoencephalopathy (TL) refers to damage to the brain white matter following exposure to toxic agents. Multiple agents are incriminated in this condition, including chemotherapy drugs. 5-Fluorouracil, widely used in oncology, is responsible for neurotoxicity in less than 5% of cases. We report the case of a 54-year-old male patient who presented with neurological symptoms following 5-FU-based chemotherapy for gastric adenocarcinoma, and whose MRI scan revealed signs suggestive of toxic leukoencephalopathy...

BACKGROUND: Globally, gastric cancer holds the fifth position in terms of prevalence among malignant tumors and is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related mortality. Particular attention should be paid to cardia adenocarcinoma (CA) due to its increasing incidence and poor prognosis. Diagnosis of CA frequently occurs in advanced stages because of its late symptoms. In such cases, neoadjuvant chemotherapy is the primary treatment option. The response to chemotherapy depends on multiple variables including the tumor's molecular profile, the patient's performance status, and the feasibility of using targeted therapy...

Gastric cancer (GC) is a globally prevalent and deadly malignancy often diagnosed at advanced stages, which can be accompanied by liver metastases. Conventional chemotherapy is contraindicated in patients with severe liver failure because several chemotherapeutic agents are metabolized by the liver. The present study reports on the successful use of nivolumab in a patient with advanced GC and severe liver failure owing to multiple liver metastases. A 57-year-old man was admitted to Shimane Prefectural Central Hospital (Izumo, Japan) with a 2-week history of appetite loss and jaundice...

Patients suffering from locally advanced gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma often face a high postoperative recurrence rate. Despite aggressive treatment, less than 50% survive beyond five years. Ongoing clinical studies are exploring ways to prolong patient survival, revealing that perioperative chemotherapy can extend both the period of recurrence-free survival and overall survival for this group of patients. Currently, combining chemotherapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors has become a critical treatment approach for advanced gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma...

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori, the main cause of various gastric diseases, infects approximately half of the human population. This pathogen is auxotrophic for cholesterol which it converts to various cholesteryl α-glucoside derivatives, including cholesteryl 6'-acyl α-glucoside (CAG). Since the related biosynthetic enzymes can be translocated to the host cells, the acyl chain of CAG likely comes from its precursor phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) in the host membranes. This work aims at examining how the acyl chain of CAG and PE inhibits the membrane functions, especially bacterial adhesion...

Gastrocolic fistula is a rare complication and can occur in various conditions, most commonly gastric or colonic adenocarcinoma, followed by benign gastric ulcers secondary to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use. We report a case of an 82-year-old man with a benign peptic ulcer that led to a gastrocolic fistula, which was not associated with a history of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use or malignancy. The exact cause of this patient's gastrocolic fistula is unclear, but the patient's medical history of microscopic lymphocytic colitis may have increased his risk of fistula formation...

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown that the tumor microenvironment significantly influences the behavior of solid tumors. In this context, Accumulated data suggests that pathological evaluation of tumor budding (TB), desmoplastic reaction (DR), and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) may be crucial in determining tumor behavior in the gastrointestinal tract. Regarding gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC), although some results suggest that TB and TILs may be effective in determining the course of the disease, the data do not agree...

There is growing recognition of early-onset gastrointestinal (GI) malignancies in young adults < 50 years of age. While much of the literature has emphasized colorectal cancer, these also include esophageal, gastric, liver, pancreatic, and biliary tract malignancies. Various factors, including lifestyle, hereditary, and environmental elements, have been proposed to explain the rising incidence of GI malignancies in the younger population. This review aims to provide an overview of the recent literature, including global trends and information regarding genetic and environmental risk factors...

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC), known for its unfavorable prognosis, has been classified in four distinct molecular subtypes. These subtypes not only exhibit differences in their genome and transcriptome but also in the composition of their tumor immune microenvironment. The microsatellite instable (MSI) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) positive GC subtypes show clear clinical benefits from immune checkpoint blockade, likely due to a neoantigen-driven and virus-driven antitumor immune response and high expression of immune checkpoint molecule PD-L1...
