UNLABELLED: One of the requirements of a health care quality management system is to be able to established clinical performance measures (CPM) for its key organisation processes. We described some of the performance measurement that has been used in our hemodialysis unit, since the implementation in the year 2001, of a Quality Management System (QMS). We analyze and compare the effect that the introduction of a ISO 9002 based QMS had in our CPM during the period 2001-2002 (post QMS) vs...

Nightly intermittent peritoneal dialysis (NIPD) with no day dwell has the potential to enhance peritoneal host defenses. We evaluated outcomes in 24 patients who had been placed on NIPD at the start of peritoneal dialysis as compared with outcomes of 24 control patients on standard continuous cycling peritoneal dialysis (CCPD). As compared with patients on CCPD, patients on NIPD had a lower peritonitis rate (0.34 episodes/year vs. 0.59 episodes/year, p < 0.03) and fewer hospital admissions (1.0 admission/year vs...

UNLABELLED: Biocompatible hemodialysis membranes induce a smaller inflammatory response in hemodialysis patients, and remove a larger amount of higher molecular weight retention products, then cellulose membranes. These phenomena could improve uremic anemia in hemodialysis patients. The objective was to evaluate the effects of biocompatible AN69 membranes on anemia in hemodialysis patients. Twenty-five stable patients undergoing hemodialysis with cuprophane membrane for more than 6 months were studied prospectively...

OBJECTIVE: To understand the types of entertainment establishments involved in commercial sex and Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) related risk behaviors among sex workers. METHODS: One district in Shanghai was selected. All entertainment establishments in the district were mapped. In-depth interview was carried out to collect information about demographic, sexual, drug use, measures of self-protection, condom use, history with sexually transmitted disease (STD) and health care seeking behaviors...

UNLABELLED: Hyperhomocysteinemia is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular mortality in ESRD, but about 80% of total homocysteine (tHcy) is bound to albumin (alb). We have tried, prospectively, to reduce tHcy levels by using folic acid (f.a.) and vitamin B6 (P.P.) supplementation. All patients on HD, not receiving f.a. or P.P. and all new patients, after their third month on HD, were supplemented with f.a. 5 mg/48 hours p.o and P.P. 40 mg/week. We determined folate, P.P. (RIA), vit...

BACKGROUND: Despite the severity and the prognosis value of undernutrition in haemodialysed patients, no large study is available as yet in Europe. Hence, this French National Cooperative Study aimed to determine the prevalence of undernutrition and its relationship to dialysis efficacy. METHODS: Nutritional status was determined in 7123 patients (i.e. one-third of the French haemodialysis population) using body mass index (BMI), predialysis haemoglobin, albumin, pre-albumin, cholesterol, and also normalized protein catabolic rate (nPCR) and lean body mass (LBM) calculated from pre- and postdialysis urea and creatinine...

BACKGROUND: Interest in measuring health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has increased together with an awareness that such humanistic outcomes require valid and reliable measures. In the last decade short, simple and multidimensional generic and disease-specific questionnaires have been developed. Among the several generic questionnaires available, the Short Form 36 Items Health Survey (SF-36) was translated and validated in several languages, and applied to different settings and diseases...

Although computer solution of the differential equations used in urea kinetic modeling has its advantages, simplified formulas that are actually approximate algebraic solutions to the same equations in the clinically useful range are also useful. The Kt/V can be resolved from the predialysis to postdialysis urea nitrogen ratio (R), the weight loss (UF), session length in hours (t), and anthropometric or modeled volume (V) using the equation: KtV = In (R - 0.008 x t) + (4 - 3.5 x R) x 0.55 UF/V. The equilibrated Kt/V (eKTV) can be estimated from the single-pool arterial Kt/V (spaKTV) or the single-pool venous Kt/V (spmvKTV) using a rate equation based on the regional blood flow model of urea kinetics: eKTV = spaKTV - (0...

Three rapid formulas for Kt/V were compared: 1) Kt/V-PRU = 0.04*PRU-1.2; 2) Kt/V-PRUopt = 0.026*PRU-0.46; and 3) KTV-LN = -In(R-0.03-UF/W). Accuracy was compared in a database of 339 3/week modeling sessions in 256 patients. The standard of comparison was Kt/V obtained by 3 point variable volume single pool modeling, using K values estimated from KoA, Qb, Qd, and UF rate. The most accurate formula was Kt/V-LN, which correlated with Kt/V to a high degree (0.994), and with a [%ERROR] of only 2.2 +/- 1.7 (SD)...
