BACKGROUND: Tuberculous constrictive pericarditis (TCP) is recommended to be treated with anti-tuberculosis (TB) therapy before pericardiectomy. Whether different preoperative anti-TB regimens may lead to different outcomes is unclear. METHODS: We retrospectively collected patients diagnosed as TCP and received pericardiectomy from April 2016 to June 2023. The study patients were assigned into the active TCP (A-TCP) group and the inactive TCP (IA-TCP) group according to the results of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) culture and MTB RNA assay...

Constrictive pericarditis is a rare, but fatal disease, leading to heart failure due to diastolic dysfunction resulting from the fibrotic and non-elastic pericardium. Clinical presentation is sneaky, with initial symptoms of splanchnic and peripheral venous congestion, then with hepatomegaly and ascites: this kind of presentation is not often recognized, delaying diagnosis. We report the case of a young male adult with no previous cardiovascular history, but with a diagnosis of hepatic cirrhosis: investigations in our Centre led to the diagnosis of constrictive pericarditis, successfully treated with pericardiectomy; however, despite the effective venous decongestion, it was not possible to spare the patient from liver transplant...

CASE SUMMARY: A 10-year-old domestic shorthair cat presented for lethargy, anorexia and labored breathing. Significant pleural and pericardial effusions prompted thoracocentesis and pericardiocentesis. Cytologic evaluation of the pericardial effusion revealed a highly cellular hemorrhagic, eosinophilic (12%) effusion, with many markedly atypical suspected mesothelial cells, interpreted as concerning for neoplasia. Thoracoscopic subtotal pericardiectomy and histology of the pericardium revealed predominantly eosinophilic inflammation with multifocal mesothelial hypertrophy and ulceration...

Constrictive pericarditis is a rare cause of ascites and cardiac cirrhosis. We present the case of a 36-year-old male patient with a history of cirrhosis of unknown etiology, who consulted for refractory ascites, dyspnea, and lower limb swelling. Echocardiography determined constrictive pericarditis, which was corroborated by the findings of computed tomography. The clinical and hemodynamic worsening of the patient led to an emergency pericardiectomy with satisfactory recovery. This report shows a severe clinical consequence of constrictive pericarditis, cardiac cirrhosis, which was reversible with pericardial extirpation...

CASE SUMMARY: An 8-year-old male neutered domestic shorthair cat presented collapsed and was subsequently diagnosed with a pericardial effusion based on ultrasound imaging. A laboratory analysis of pericardial fluid revealed a septic pericardial effusion and further diagnostics, including abdominal ultrasound and fluid analysis, revealed a concurrent hepatic abscess. Bacterial isolation and identification from both septic foci revealed Escherichia coli . Therapeutic measures included a combination of medical and surgical intervention, the latter including a pericardiectomy, cholecystectomy, liver lobectomy and splenectomy...

UNLABELLED: Milk of calcium (MOC) pericardial effusion (PE) is extremely rare and has rarely been reported. A 78-year-old man was referred to our institution because of breathlessness and bilateral leg edema. Echocardiography revealed mild PE. In addition, abrupt posterior motion of the ventricular septum in early diastole was observed. A non-contrast chest computed tomography revealed a hyperdense PE, with Hounsfield units of 130, suggestive of MOC PE. Right heart catheterization (RHC) revealed that the right ventricular pressure had a dip and plateau pattern...

This abstract presents the case of a 37-year-old female with no significant past medical history who presented to the emergency department with a unique and challenging clinical scenario. The patient complained of chest pain, dyspnea, and a productive cough associated with stabbing chest pain that improved with leaning forward for the past week. Despite an initial diagnosis of community-acquired pneumonia, the patient's condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to septic shock. Blood cultures ultimately revealed Streptococcus pneumoniae as the causative organism...

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease commonly affects advanced liver disease patients. They undergo cardiac interventions to improve cardiac outcomes. Cirrhosis increases complication risk, including bleeding, renal and respiratory failure, and further decompensation, including death, posing a clinical dilemma to proceduralists. Predicting outcomes is crucial in managing patients with cirrhosis. Our aim was to systematically review clinical parameters to assess the mortality and complication risk in patients with cirrhosis undergoing cardiac interventions...

Angiosarcoma is the most invasive and malignant cardiac tumor and most commonly originates from the right atrium. Early diagnosis is essential, and echocardiography has an important role in diagnosis. This tumor grows aggressively, and metastases to other sites makes it difficult to control. Surgical treatment remains the best option for patients who do not respond to chemoradiotherapy. We herein report a case of a 17-year-old patient with cardiac angiosarcoma who presented with dyspnea, chest pain, dry cough, and fever...

Lymphomas are a group of malignant tumors that originate in the lymphatic system. It is the most common type of blood cancer. It affects the lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow, blood, and other organs. They can be aggressive or chronic. Hodgkin lymphoma survival rate is 2 in 100,000 people. Young adults aged 20-30 and people over 50 are most often affected. The prognosis of Hodgkin's lymphoma is good, with a survival rate of up to 80 percent. Nevertheless, in 20-30 percent of patients who initially respond to treatment, the disease has a tendency to progress...

Chylopericardium can be due to a variety of secondary causes like trauma, radiation, tumors, following cardiac surgery, etc., or may be idiopathic due to abnormal lymphatic system and mediastinal lymphangiectasia, which is a rare entity. Here, we present a case of a 34-year-old previously healthy male presenting with idiopathic chylopericardium. 2D echocardiography revealed massive pericardial effusion without features of cardiac tamponade. Following pericardiocentesis, a CT scan of the thorax and MR lymphangiogram were done to arrive at a diagnosis of idiopathic chylopericardium...
