Neurocristopathies (NCPs) encompass a spectrum of disorders arising from issues during the formation and migration of neural crest cells (NCCs). NCCs undergo epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and upon key developmental gene deregulation, fetuses and neonates are prone to exhibit diverse manifestations depending on the affected area. These conditions are generally rare and often have a genetic basis, with many following Mendelian inheritance patterns, thus making them perfect candidates for precision medicine...

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Any cranial, peripheral, or autonomic nerve in the body can give rise to a benign, slowly growing encapsulated nerve sheath tumor known as a schwannoma. The majority of parapharyngeal extracranial schwannomas, which typically have vagal origins, are located there. When they first appear, most swannomas are asymptomatic. Vague symptoms may be present in some people. CASE PRESENTATION: She is a 35-year-old Ethiopian female patient presented with left lateral neck swelling of 11 years duration which was initially small but gradually increases to attain the current size...

Schwannomas are rare benign tumours of the nerve sheath. Extracranial schwannomas are usually found solitary, in the absence of other features of neurofibromatosis. The non NF1/2 multiple schwannomas are collectively described as the clinical scenario called schwannomatosis. We present a rare case of two extracranial schwannomas involving vagus and hypoglossal nerves in a 22-year-old female along with an unusual surgical complication of CSF leak presenting as post-op neck mass and a review of previously reported similar cases...

BACKGROUND: No reports on applying adhesive skin electrodes for intraoperative nerve monitoring (IONM) of the vagus nerve during schwannoma enucleation have been reported in the literature. METHODS: A 45-year-old patient was referred to our institution with a 2.2 cm mass in the left lateral neck, suspected to be a vagal nerve schwannoma. A pair of surface electrodes were attached to the lateral margin of the thyroid cartilage. After exposing the tumor, the authors selected the incision site avoiding the expected course of the vagus nerve fibers after mapping on the surface of the tumor...

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Vagal paragangliomas of neck are rare tumours of neural crest origin usually arising in elderly age with female predominance. They have a vague clinical presentation therefore difficult to diagnose preoperatively. We hope that this case report and literature review would add to the existing literature and help devise a comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic plan for vagal paragangliomas. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of vagal paraganglioma occurring in a 13-year-old male which is an extremely rare presentation in this age group...

Schwannoma is a slowly growing benign tumor that arises from Schwann cells. Schwannomas affect both genders equally. It occurs in any age group, but most cases are seen between the third and fifth decade. About one-fourth to one-third of extracranial schwannomas cases originate in the head and neck region. The vagus nerve, followed by the cervical sympathetic chain, is the leading site of origin in the neck region. The majority of patients with schwannomas are asymptomatic. Patients with vagal nerve schwannomas in the neck primarily present with hoarseness of voice due to paralysis of the vocal cords...

Ancient schwannoma is the term used to describe a schwannoma that has undergone changes viz loss of antoni Type A cells, perivascular hyalinization, calcification, cystic necrosis, hemorrhage and presence of degenerative nuclear changes. Ackerman and Taylor (Cancer 4:669-691, 1951) introduced the term "ancient schwannoma". Cervical vagal schwannoma is a rare clinical entity that requires a different clinical approach than other neck swellings. Magnetic resonance imaging is the preferred initial diagnostic test. Complications may arise due to vagal stimulation in unsuspecting open biopsies. Surgical excision with perioperative vagal monitoring is recommended for the treatment of vagal schwannomas.

PURPOSE: Schwannoma, a tumor originating from the peripheral nervous system, may arise from the vagus nerve, although it is not very often. Injury of the vagus nerve by surgical attempts may have consequences that will seriously affect the patient's quality of life. In recent years, continuous monitoring of the laryngeal adductor reflex (LAR) has become a promising methodology for evaluating vagus nerve function intraoperatively. We refer to our experience changing our surgical strategy due to concurrent deterioration in LAR and CoMEPs intraoperatively...

Hiccups are common reflexes and many treatment methods have been reported. Chlorpromazine is a known treatment option for hiccups, but its efficacy under general anesthesia remains unclear. We report the case of a patient with vagal schwannoma who developed hiccups while under general anesthesia. Muscle relaxants were not used because the patient was under neuromonitoring. The depth of anesthesia was deepened; however, the hiccups did not disappear. The hiccups were relieved by intravenous chlorpromazine administration (total; 5 mg), which allowed for surgery under neuromonitoring...

Schwannomas are benign nerve tumors of schwann cell origin. Schwann cells are derived from neural crest and are therefore of neuroectodermal origin. 25-40% of all schwannomas arise in the head and neck region. The most common schwannomas are vagal schwannomas and cervical schwannomas in the head and neck region. Here we present two cases of head and neck schwannomas which were not identified as originating from any major nerve. The first patient had a schwannoma in the infratemporal region which was excised by performing transzygomatic approach, and the second patient had a schwannoma in the left lateral part of the neck which was excised using a cervical crease incision...

Schwannoma arising from vagal nerve is a rare tumour. It is a slow-growing, benign mass, but rarely it might undergo malignant transformation. We report a case of a 55-year-old woman with asymptomatic Xth cranial nerve schwannoma in the left side of the neck. Initially, during the ultrasound examination, the tumour was misconceived to be a malignant lymph node. The patient underwent complete surgical excision of it. Histopathological examination revealed typical features of schwannoma. Clinical diagnose of cervical vagal nerve schwannoma is difficult...

Vagus nerve schwannoma is a very rare benign nerve tumor. Pheochromocytoma is a rare, mostly benign tumor of the adrenal medulla with a large clinical spectrum. Their association is uncommon. The management of both tumors depends solely on surgery. The surgery of vagal schwannomas is particularly challenging considering the anatomical compositions of the area. Here, we report a case of a 76 year-old patient with cervical vagal schwannoma and benign pheochromocytoma association. We discuss the diagnosis and the surgical management of these tumors...
