This study assessed whether genetic variants coding for certain enzymes involved in xenobiotic detoxification, antioxidant defences and DNA repair, along with exposure to environmental chemicals, were associated with an increased prostate cancer (PCa) risk. The study population consisted of 300 men (150 PCa cases and 150 controls) which underwent prostate biopsy as their serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels were greater than 4ng/ml. Genetic variants in GSTM1, GSTP1, SOD2, CAT, GPX1, XRCC1 were determined and data for chemical exposures was obtained through a structured questionnaire and by biomonitoring in a subsample of cases and controls...

Environmental contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and heavy metals are major contaminants of food such as fish thus serving as source of exposure to human. This study was designed to evaluate the carcinogenic risk and other risks associated with long-term consumption of environmentally relevant dose of nickel and benzo [a] anthracene in rats. Thirty-six (36) male rats weighing between 80 and 100 g were assigned into 6 groups of 6 animals each; normal, nickel-, and benzo [a] anthracene-exposed groups for 12 and 24 weeks, respectively...

A pair of enantiopure [6]-azairidahelicenes incorporating chirality at the metal center and on the helicenic ligand were synthesized by dynamic kinetic resolution (dkr) of a configurationally labile [4]-helicenic ligand (4-(2-pyridyl)-benzo[g]phenanthrene, L1H) using bis-cyclometalated chiral-at-metal only iridium(III) precursors as chiral inductors. The origin of the observed dkr is attributed to the different conformation and stability of diastereomeric reaction intermediates formed during the cyclometalation process...

INTRODUCTION: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causal agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has infected millions of individuals worldwide, which poses a severe threat to human health. COVID-19 is a systemic ailment affecting various tissues and organs, including the lungs and liver. Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is one of the most common liver cancer, and cancer patients are particularly at high risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Nonetheless, few studies have investigated the impact of COVID-19 on ICC patients...

This study replicated a mouse model of sperm DNA damage induced by benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), and the transcriptomic and proteomic features of the model were examined to clarify the pathways related to BaP-induced damage to sperm DNA. Male mice in the BaP group were subjected to BaP at a dosage of 100mg/kg/d or an equivalent quantity of saline solution in the control group for 60 days. Subsequently, the DNA fragmentation index (DFI) in sperm was assessed using a sperm chromatin structure assay (SCSA). RNA-seq and data-independent acquisition (DIA) were used to identify the mRNA and protein expression patterns in the testis...

The second near-infrared (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) light-activated organic photothermal agent that synchronously enables satisfying NIR-II fluorescence imaging is highly warranted yet rather challenging on the basis of the overwhelming nonradiative decay. Herein, such an agent, namely TPABT-TD, was tactfully designed and constructed via employing benzo[c]thiophene moiety as bulky electron donor/π-bridge and tailoring the peripheral molecular rotors. Benefitting from its high electron donor-acceptor strength and finely modulated intramolecular motion, TPABT-TD simultaneously exhibits ultralong absorption in NIR-II region, intense fluorescence emission in the NIR-IIa (1300-1500 nm) region as nanoaggregates, and high photothermal conversion upon 1064 nm laser irradiation...

Microplastics (MPs) and persistent pollutants (POPs) are new pollutants that are extensively studied worldwide. To fill the gaps that the degradation processes and mechanisms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the surface of most MPs are still unclear, the photochemical transformation of benzo(a)anthracene (BaA) on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) MPs and polystyrene (PS) MPs in water were investigated and compared. The photolysis of BaA on the surface of PS in water proceeded easier than that on PVC within the 48 h irradiation period, with the pseudo-first-order rate constant of 0...

Previously, 5 toxicity pathways were proposed from hundreds of toxicological studies that underlie BaP-induced lung injuries, and a "Bottom-up" approach was established to identify small non-coding RNAs that drive BaP-induced pulmonary effects by investigating the activation of these pathways in vitro, and the expression of the candidate microRNAs were validated in tissues of patients with lung diseases from publications...

Meso-nitrile oxide group in 1,7-Diphenyl-containing BODIPYs can be involved in highly unusual [3+2] intramolecular cycloaddition reaction with the formation of the dihydrobenzo[d]isoxazole-containing BODIPYs. Oxidation of these compounds results in the formation of unprecedented either benzisoxazole- or benzo[b]azepine-fused fully conjugated NIR absorbing BODIPYs. The photophysical properties and electronic structures of the target compounds were studied by an array of experimental and theoretical methods.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations in the leaves and 1-year-old branches of three common tree species growing in a middle-sized city located in a moderate climate zone were estimated. For this purpose, PAH phytoaccumulation in Platanus × acerifolia, Celtis australis, and Tilia grandifolia species from highly urbanized, traffic congested, and highly PAH-contaminated streets was compared with trees from non-contaminated parks in the same urban core. The function of CD5 protein in T cells is well documented, but regulation of its surface-level expression has yet to be fully understood. However, variation in its surface expression is associated with various immunopathological conditions and haematological malignancies. Briefly, expression of an alternate exon E1B of a human endogenous retroviruses (HERV) origin directly downregulates the conventional transcript variant (E1A), as its expression leads to the retention of the resultant protein at the intracellular level (cCD5)...

Breast cancer is the most frequent neoplasia in developed countries and the leading cause of death in women worldwide. Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a cellular process through which epithelial cells decrease or lose their epithelial characteristics and gain mesenchymal properties. EMT mediates tumor progression, because tumor cells acquire the capacity to execute the multiple steps of invasion and metastasis. Flexible and twisted annulated π-systems exhibit numerous unique and desirable features, owing to their ability to display chirality. However, preventing their racemization due to the dynamic nature of their chirality remains a challenge. One promising approach to stabilize homochirality in such systems is chirality transfer from a chiral auxiliary to a moiety displaying dynamic chirality. Herein, we introduce a new approach for dynamic chirality stabilization in conformationally flexible azahelicene species via crystallization-induced intermolecular chirality transfer in Au(I) complexes featuring azahelicene (dibenzo[ c,g ]carbazole and benzo[ c ]carbazole) and enantio-pure chiral N -heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands with a complementary tailored shape...
