Hemorheological properties and disorders are very specific in the microcirculation since blood is actually not a fluid in the capillaries and in the adjacent arterioles and venules. This is because almost half of the blood volume constitutes the red and white blood cells whose size is commensurable with the microvessels lumen. Based on perennial investigations we concluded that the advancement of blood in capillaries is primarily dependent on the "structure" of the flowing blood that determines the resistance to blood advancement in the microvessels rather than on the well-known hydrodynamic relationships characteristic for the larger blood vessels...

COMPARATIVE STUDY

The authors present treatment policy in acute pyelonephritis (AP) associated with diabetus mellitus (DM) and analyse treatment efficacy basing on the material on 214 patients. A clinical course of AP in the presence of DM has some specific features. The disease manifests primarily with clinico-laboratory signs of DM decompensation. Lack of insulin therapy effect in DM decompensated patients indirectly points to acute, especially purulent, pyelonephritis. High temperature, abnormal leukocytic blood picture, leukocyturia, hypercreatininemia in patients with insulin-resistent DM demands urological examination...

Emphysematous pyelonephritis (EPN) is a rare and severe form of acute pyelonephritis. Escherichia coli accounts for 60% of the cases. Predisposing factors are: diabetus mellitus, recent urinary tract infection and obstruction. There is a female predominance (2/1). Conventional radiography reveals the renal emphysema in 85% of the cases. Ultrasonography shows hyperechoic areas corresponding to the gaz. CT scan is the best technique, allowing the exact localization of the gaz inside the renal parenchyma. The natural course of the disease allows its radiologic classification in 4 grades...

BACKGROUND: The development of postransplantation diabetes mellitus (PTDM) is a serious complication of kidney transplantation. PTDM has a major impact on quality of life decreasing rates of patient and graft survival. It is well known that some currently used immunosuppressants are diabetogenic. Greater diabetogenicity of FK-506 has been reported in multicenter trials. We initiated a study of conversion from tacrolimus (FK-506) to cyclosporine (CsA) among kidney allograft recipients presenting with PTDM to evaluate whether this maneuver would ameliorate a diabetic state...

The study underlines the high incidence of the new founded cases with diabetus melitus in complicated diabetes retinopathy stage; the high frequency of ocular complications is explained, according to our statistic facts and through an insufficient treatment, sometimes incorrect and many other cases total neglected by the patients...

Conventional therapy for intracranial germinomas is craniospinal irradiation. In 1990, the Société Française d'Oncologie Pédiatrique initiated a study combining chemotherapy (alternating courses of etoposide-carboplatin and etoposide-ifosfamide for a recommended total of four courses) with 40 Gy local irradiation for patients with localized germinomas. Metastatic patients were allocated to receive low-dose craniospinal radiotherapy. Fifty-seven patients were enrolled between 1990 and 1996. Forty-seven had biopsy-proven germinoma...

We have diagnosed lung abscess according to findings of infiltration with cavity formation on chest X-ray and/or CT-scan and pathogens isolated from transtracheal aspirates. We evaluated the clinical features of 20 patients with lung abscess (18 males and 2 females, mean age; 54.3 years). Diabetus mellitus and periodontal diseases were prominent underlying diseases in patients with lung abscess. Cough was complained in 13 patients, chest or back pain in 9, purulent sputum in 8 and hemosputum in 5 when the patients admitted to our hospital...

Therapeutic effectivity of new extrusion products "Jantar" have been studied. These products include 10% of dietary fiber gumarabic. It was shown that consumption of products "Jantar" caused a 18.1, 23.2, 16 and 16.3% decrease in the levels of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, tryglicerols and apoprotein B respectively. A decreasing body mass index and hypoglycamic effect also have been observed. Thus, extrusion products "Jantar" may be recommended for diet therapy of hypercholesterolemia, obesity and diabetus melitus...

Usage of special prophylactic products, such as low caloric vitamins and b-carotene enriched soft drink "Gold Ball", b-carotene oileous solution and salt with low sodium content in patients with insulin independent diabetus resulted in better vitamins and b-carotene provision, decrease of the incidence of hypovitaminosis, improvement of antioxidant status, and was accompanied by the decrease of arterial blood pressure. These data allowed us to recommend wide usage of these products in the diet of patients.

AIM: To illustrate and stress the role of the dose volume relationship in the risk of radiation induced rectal complications. METHODS: With different techniques of irradiation like contact x ray therapy, Iridium implant, external beam irradiation, intra operative electrontherapy, it is possible to irradiate different volumes from few centicubes to liters. RESULTS: The data from the literature clearly demonstrate that high doses can be given safely in small volumes, but that doses of 50 Gy or more in large volumes are dangerous...

By means of biomicroscopic method the bulbar conjunctiva in 150 women (18-35 years of age) have been examined. Of them: 30 healthy women make the control group; the second group includes 60 healthy women at their first and second half of pregnancy; the third group includes 60 women with pregnancy developing against the background of noncomplicated insulin-dependent diabetus mellitus during their first and second half of pregnancy. In the healthy women there are not any significant changes in most of the parameters of the microcirculatory bed during the first half of their pregnancy, and in the second half of their pregnancy a great density of the blood vascular bed is determined...

In view of the tendency toward vascular disease in diabetes mellitus, we studied platelet aggregation in 15 normal, 7 prediabetic, 12 latent, and 20 frankly diabetic subjects. Platelets from latent and frank diabetics showed increased platelet aggregation 4 minutes after adding adenosine 5'-diphosphate (60% verus 29% at 1.0 mu-M), epinephrine (46% versus 14% at 0.25 mu-M), and collagen (72% versus 17% at 0.25 mu-g/ml). Three prediabetics had increased platelet aggregation. Platelet sensitivity to aggregating agents was most marked in frank diabetics, intermediate in latent diabetics, and least in prediabetics...

In order to study the character of lesions in the neuro-muscular system in endocrinological diseases the authors examined 156 patients with diffuse toxic struma, hypothyroidism and diabetus with the aid of clinico-EMG methods. A comparison of the investigation results of clinical, bioptic material and EMG data testified to an involvement into the process of all regions of the segmental neuromuscular apparatus. The results of EMG studies may serve as control data in relation to the effectiveness of the used therapy...
