Alveolar echinococcosis is a potentially life-threatening parasitic disease primarily involving the liver caused by echinococcus multilocularis. Alveolar echinococcosis shows tumor-like growth that can lead to infiltration of neighboring organs. It is a slowly progressive disease and most commonly metastasizes to the lung. In this study, a 45-year-old female case of alveolar echinococcosis with bilateral pulmonary diffuse calcified multiple nodules metastases is presented.

Sorafenib, a kinase inhibitor, is known to cause skin toxicity, which sometimes leads to treatment interruption or drug dose reduction. Erythema multiforme (EM) is one of these dermatologic toxicities induced by sorafenib. We report the case of a 28-year-old male with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Two months after surgery, the patient presented with multiple metastases to the retroperitoneal lymph nodes and lungs. Therefore, systemic therapy with sorafenib was indicated. While receiving the medication, the patient presented signs compatible with EM...

BACKGROUND: Obesity drives maladaptive changes in the white adipose tissue (WAT) which can progressively cause insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and metabolic dysfunction-associated liver disease (MASLD). Obesity-mediated loss of WAT homeostasis can trigger liver steatosis through dysregulated lipid pathways such as those related to polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA)-derived oxylipins. However, the exact relationship between oxylipins and metabolic syndrome remains elusive and cross-tissue dynamics of oxylipins are ill-defined...

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are a heterogeneous class of cancers, predominately occurring in the gastroenteropancreatic system, which pose a growing health concern with a significant rise in incidence over the past four decades. Emerging from neuroendocrine cells, these tumors often elicit paraneoplastic syndromes such as carcinoid syndrome, which can manifest as a constellation of symptoms significantly impacting patients' quality of life. The prognosis of NETs is influenced by their tendency for metastasis, especially in cases involving the liver, where the estimated 5-year survival is between 20 and 40%...

Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is a minimally invasive treatment for liver cancer, often employed as a bridging therapy or destination treatment for non-operable cases. This case report discusses an 82-year-old woman with a large hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who underwent elective TACE due to the high surgical risk associated with her tumor size. Unexpectedly, the patient experienced liver rupture 20 h post-procedure, leading to acute surgical intervention. Despite successful hemostasis during surgery, the patient succumbed to progressive multi-organ failure...

BACKGROUND: Primary liver cancer (PHC) stands as one of the most prevalent malignant diseases in clinical settings. Studies have indicated that transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) treatment exhibits superior clinical outcomes, potentially increasing the complete necrosis rate in patients with PHC. A correlation exists between the clinical outcomes of TACE surgery and the process of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), yet the underlying mechanism remains a mystery. Hence, it is crucial to investigate the impact and mechanism of EMT on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)...

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to compare 3-year overall survival after simultaneous portal (PVE) and hepatic vein (HVE) embolization versus PVE alone in patients undergoing liver resection for primary and secondary cancers of the liver. METHODS: In this multicentre retrospective study, all DRAGON 0 centres provided 3-year follow-up data for all patients who had PVE/HVE or PVE, and were included in DRAGON 0 between 2016 and 2019. Kaplan-Meier analysis was undertaken to assess 3-year overall and recurrence/progression-free survival...

In this context, the need for clearly understanding the factors predisposing patients to PPF following THA and the impact of these adverse complications on the overall healthcare burden cannot be understated. He underwent first-line chemotherapy with SOX, second-line treatment with PTX plus Ram, and third-line treatment with nivolumab. The primary tumor showed a reduction in size, and liver and lymph node metastases were not detectable. TECHNIQUE: Hepatocellular adenoma (HCA) is a benign monoclonal tumour that originates from mature hepatocytes.Liver resection is recommended in case of overt malignant transformation to hepatocellular carcinoma. However, hepatobiliary surgeries are technically challenging in patients with giant HCA (GHCA) owing to the risk of catastrophic intraoperative bleeding and difficulty with its control during laparoscopic treatment. We present a technical note on the utilization of the hepatic vein as anatomical landmarks for laparoscopic removal of giant hepatic glands, without intraoperative ultrasonography and with the aid of an augmented reality navigation system during surgery...

Liver cancer currently represents the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. The majority of liver cancer arises in the context of chronic inflammation and cirrhosis. Surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy have been the guideline-recommended treatment options for decades. Despite enormous advances in the field of liver cancer therapy, an effective cure is yet to be found. Plant-derived polyphenols constitute a large family of phytochemicals, with pleiotropic effects and little toxicity. They can drive cellular events and modify multiple signaling pathways which involves initiation, progression and metastasis of liver cancer and play an important role in contributing to anti-liver cancer drug development...

This technical report explores the efficacy and methodology of laparoscopic surgery for treating abdominal echinococcosis, a parasitic infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus. We highlight the zoonotic nature of the disease, which predominantly affects the liver and occasionally other organs, noting the challenge of its asymptomatic progression that complicates timely diagnosis and intervention. We detail our surgical technique using a standard laparoscopy kit to address abdominal hydatid cysts, emphasizing the critical importance of preventing cyst rupture and spillage to avoid recurrence and anaphylactic shock...

Following its initial execution in November 2015, pure laparoscopic donor hepatectomy (PLDH) has gained acceptance as a conventional practice at Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH). It is noteworthy that a significant proportion of cases entail full right hepatectomies, which are acknowledged to be technically demanding. As expertise and knowledge have been accrued, the pure laparoscopic technique has been extended to encompass liver recipients as a viable option in SNUH. The aim of this review is to present the developmental progression of PLDH, with a focus on pure laparoscopic donor right hepatectomy (PLDRH), at SNUH...

A high mortality rate makes hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) a difficult cancer to treat. When surgery is not possible, liver cancer patients are treated with chemotherapy. However, HCC management and treatment are difficult. Sorafenib, which is a first-line treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma, initially slows disease progression. However, sorafenib resistance limits patient survival. Recent studies have linked HCC to programmed cell death, which has increased researcher interest in therapies targeting cell death...

Portal vein embolization with stem cell augmentation (PVESA) is an emerging approach for enhancing the growth of the liver segment that will remain after surgery (i.e., future liver remnant, FLR) in patients with liver cancer. Conventional portal vein embolization (PVE) aims to induce preoperative FLR growth, but it has a risk of failure in patients with underlying liver dysfunction and comorbid illnesses. PVESA combines PVE with stem cell therapy to potentially improve FLR size and function more effectively and efficiently...
