Leukemia is a common malignancy affecting humans worldwide. Pirarubicin (Pira) is one of the anticancer agents used for the treatment of leukemia. Although Pira is effective, drug resistance may develop in cancer cells exposed to this drug, whereas the combination of natural products with Pira may help to overcome this problem. The aim of the present study was to focus on the effect of gallic acid (GA) on the anticancer activity of Pira in K562 leukemia cells and K562/doxorubicin (Dox)‑resistant leukemia cells in order to investigate the possible underlying mechanisms...

Young adulthood is increasingly considered as a vulnerable age group for significant weight gain, and it is apparent that there is an increasing number of new cases of metabolic syndrome developing among this population. This study included 60 young adult volunteers (18-26 years old). All participants obtained a calculated total abdominal fat percentage, subcutaneous fat percentage, and visceral fat percentage using a semiautomatic segmentation technique from T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images of the abdomen...

Tima nigroannulata sp. nov. is described from medusae collected in shallow waters of four prefectures on the Pacific coast of Japan (Miyagi, Fukushima, Kanagawa, and Miyazaki), as well as from cultures maintained at two aquaria (Enoshima Aquarium, Kanagawa Prefecture; Tsuruoka City Kamo Aquarium, Yamagata Prefecture). Adult medusae differ from those of other known species of the genus Tima Eschscholtz, 1829 in the following combination of characters: (1) umbrella usually hemispherical or higher, (2) marginal tentacles up to 50 or more in number; and (3) black pigment granules form a ring around the umbrella rim, and sometimes extend onto the tentacles and radial canals...

Interleukin-27 (IL-27) is a cytokine that suppresses human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 infection in macrophages and is considered as an immunotherapeutic reagent for infectious diseases. It is reported that IL-27 suppresses autophagy in Mycobacterium tuberculosis-infected macrophages; however, a role for IL-27 on autophagy induction has been less studied. In this study, we investigated the impact of IL-27 in both autophagy induction and HIV-1 infection in macrophages. Primary human monocytes were differentiated into macrophages using human AB serum (huAB) alone, macrophage-colony stimulating factor (M-CSF) alone, or a combination of IL-27 with huAB or M-CSF...

4-Hydroxybenzoic acids (4-HBA) and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoic acid (Vanillic acid, VA) have exhibited several pharmacological activities. Generally, the biological activities of compounds are highly involved in the interaction between protein and compounds in blood plasma. The objective was to investigate the interaction of 4-HBA or VA with human serum albumin (HSA) and their anti-proliferation properties on doxorubicin-sensitive K562 and doxorubicin-resistant K562/Dox leukemia cells. The protein binding of 4-HBA or VA to HSA was investigated using fluorescence quenching at temperatures of 298 and 310 Kelvin (K) under the pH of 6...

Our experiences in the world support memories not only of specific episodes but also of the generalities (the 'gist') across related experiences. It remains unclear how these two types of memories evolve and influence one another over time. In two experiments, 173 human participants encoded spatial locations from a distribution and reported both item memory (specific locations) and gist memory (center for the locations) across one to two months. Experiment 1 demonstrated that after one month, gist memory was preserved relative to item memory, despite a persistent positive correlation between them...

Stimulating angiogenesis during wound healing continues to present a significant clinical challenge, given the limitations of current strategies to maintain therapeutic doses of growth factors and endothelial cell efficacy. Incorporating a balance of specific cues to encourage endothelial cell engraftment and cytokines to facilitate angiogenesis is necessary for blood vessel growth in the proinflammatory wound environment. Here, we incorporate a previously designed peptide (LXW7) capable of binding to the αvβ3 integrin of endothelial cells with a dermatan sulfate glycosaminoglycan backbone grafted with collagen-binding peptides (SILY)...

BACKGROUND: Advances in imaging, biomaterials and precision radiotherapy provide new opportunities to salvage locally recurrent prostate cancer (PC). This study evaluates the efficacy and safety of re-irradiation using stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). We hypothesized that patients with castrate-resistant PC (CRPC) would benefit less from local salvage. METHODS: A prospective clinical database was reviewed to extract 30 consecutive patients treated with prostate re-irradiation...

Novel tuberculosis (TB)-vaccines preferably should (i) boost host immune responses induced by previous BCG vaccination and (ii) be directed against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) proteins expressed throughout the Mtb infection-cycle. Human Mtb antigen-discovery screens identified antigens encoded by Mtb-genes highly expressed during in vivo murine infection (IVE-TB antigens). To translate these findings towards animal models, we determined which IVE-TB-antigens are recognised by T-cells following Mtb challenge or BCG vaccination in three different mouse strains...

The demonstrable value of precision medicine, in the context of common environmental exposures, has scarcely been explored. This study evaluated the cost effectiveness of a preventive personalised intervention to reduce the adverse effect of air pollution in the context of asthma. A decision-analytic model was used to conduct a cost-utility analysis of prevention interventions in case of acute exposure to air pollution in mild asthma. Three different strategies, as follows, were compared: no preventive intervention; precision health strategy based on information from genotype testing, followed with treating high-risk patients; and prescribing additional medication to all mild asthmatics as a preventive intervention...
