OBJECTIVES: The transition of adolescents and young adults (AYAs) from pediatric to adult-oriented healthcare may be affected by many factors, including the personal and cultural settings. We aimed to analyze the transition readiness and the factors affecting the transition success in rheumatology. METHODS: Patients older than 12 years were included in this prospective study. All filled out the Transition Readiness Assessment Questionnaire (TRAQ) 5.0. AYAs were phone-interviewed after their transfer to adult-oriented healthcare...

Recent analyses have shown that, whereas cancer survival overall has been improving, it has not improved for adolescents and young adults ages 15-39 years (AYA). The clinical care of AYA with primary brain and other central nervous system (CNS) tumors (BT) is complicated by the fact that the histopathologies of such tumors in AYA differ from their histopathologies in either children (ages 0-14 years) or older adults (ages 40+ years). The present report, as an update to a 2016 publication from the Central Brain Tumor Registry of the United States and the American Brain Tumor Association, provides in-depth analyses of the epidemiology of primary BT in AYA in the United States and is the first to provide biomolecular marker-specific statistics and prevalence by histopathology for both primary malignant and non-malignant BT in AYA...

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) ranks among the five most common cancers in young people in high-income countries and it features peculiar clinicopathological traits. Very few studies have addressed the quality of care and the costs for adolescents and young adults (AYA) population. OBJECTIVE: To provide a comprehensive epidemiological and clinicopathological profile of CMM in AYA. The study also addresses the cost-of-illness and the diagnostic-therapeutic performance indicators by patient age category...

Mechanical ventilation is widely used and requires specific knowledge for understanding and management. Health professionals in this field may feel insecure and lack knowledge because of inadequate training and teaching methods. Therefore, the objective of this article is to outline the steps involved in generating an ex vivo porcine lung model to be used in the future, to study and teach lung mechanics. To generate the model, five porcine lungs were carefully removed from the thorax following the guidelines of the Animal Research Ethics Committee with adequate care and were connected to the mechanical ventilator through a tracheal cannula...

Purpose: Adolescents and young adults (AYA) with chronic illnesses experience an increase in mental health concerns. A mental health screening (MHS) process for hematology and oncology patients was implemented in a single institution. The quality improvement project was conducted to integrate a MHS process, educate providers about the importance of mental health in this patient population, and evaluate the process. Methods: The COM-B (capability, opportunity, motivation-behavior) model for behavior change was used to inform strategic planning and Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) methodologies for process improvement...

Delirium tremens (DT) is a severe condition resulting from alcohol withdrawal. This review highlights the challenges in diagnosing and managing DT and emphasizes the importance of early recognition and intervention to prevent complications and ensure optimal patient outcomes. The discussion of the pathophysiology of DT, focusing on the neurochemical imbalances involving the neurotransmitters gamma-aminobutyric acid and glutamate, explains how chronic alcohol dependence leads to these imbalances and contributes to the hyperexcitability seen in DT...

BACKGROUND: Adolescent and young adult (AYA) solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients experience increased rates of rejection and graft loss surrounding the time of health care transition, in part due to poor medication adherence. This study aims to examine the impact of a once-daily formulation of tacrolimus, LCP-tacrolimus (LCPT), on medication adherence for AYA SOT patients. METHODS: A retrospective descriptive analysis was performed for all patients who underwent SOT and were prescribed LCPT after the age of 12 at our single-center pediatric hospital...

BACKGROUND: Peripheral ossifying fibroma is a nonneoplastic inflammatory hyperplasia that originates in the periodontal ligament or periosteum in response to chronic mechanical irritation. Peripheral ossifying fibroma develops more commonly in young females as a solitary, slow-growing, exophytic nodular mass of the gingiva, no more than 2 cm in diameter. While various synonyms have been used to refer to peripheral ossifying fibroma, very similar names have also been applied to neoplastic diseases that are pathologically distinct from peripheral ossifying fibroma, causing considerable nomenclatural confusion...

As we learned during the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccines are one of the most important tools in infectious disease control. To date, an unprecedentedly large volume of high-quality data on COVID-19 vaccinations have been accumulated. For preparedness in future pandemics beyond COVID-19, these valuable datasets should be analyzed to best shape an effective vaccination strategy. We are collecting longitudinal data from a community-based cohort in Fukushima, Japan, that consists of 2,407 individuals who underwent serum sampling two or three times after a two-dose vaccination with either BNT162b2 or mRNA-1273...

Cryptococcus deneoformans is a yeast-type fungus that causes fatal meningoencephalitis in immunocompromised patients and evades phagocytic cell elimination through an escape mechanism. Memory T (Tm) cells play a central role in preventing the reactivation of this fungal pathogen. Among these cells, tissue-resident memory T (TRM ) cells quickly respond to locally invaded pathogens. This study analyzes the kinetics of effector T (Teff) cells and Tm cells in the lungs after cryptococcal infection. Emphasis is placed on the kinetics and cytokine expression of TRM cells in the early phase of infection...

Myosin phosphatase targeting subunit1 (MYPT1) is a critical subunit of myosin phosphatase (MP), which brings PP1Cδ phosphatase and its substrate together. We previously showed that MYPT1 depletion resulted in oblique chromatid segregation. Therefore, we hypothesized that MYPT1 may control microtubule-dependent motor activity. Dynein, a minus-end microtubule motor, is known to be involved in mitotic spindle assembly. We thus examined whether MYPT1 and dynein may interact. Proximity ligation assay and co-immunoprecipitation revealed that MYPT1 and dynein intermediate chain (DIC) were associated...

INTRODUCTION: Fertility after cancer is a top concern for adolescents and young adults with cancer (AYAs) (15-39 years old at diagnosis). The authors characterized live births after cancer by race and ethnicity ("race/ethnicity") in a population-based sample of female AYAs. METHODS: This study used Texas Cancer Registry data linked to birth certificates (1995-2016) to estimate cumulative incidence of live birth, based on first live birth after cancer, and compared differences by race/ethnicity...

INTRODUCTION: Nicotine withdrawal is a well-established construct that prompts continued nicotine product use and contributes to failed cessation efforts. Despite ongoing public health concerns about nicotine e-cigarette use in adolescents and young adults (AYAs), no psychometrically-sound measure of nicotine e-cigarette withdrawal exists for this population. METHODS: A mixed methods approach comprising a literature review to identify existing nicotine withdrawal items; subject matter expert feedback on existing items and novel item generation; cognitive interviews assessing the measure's instructions, items, and response options; and a large quantitative validation survey (N = 997) was employed to develop the novel retrospective measure of nicotine e-cigarette withdrawal...
