We study geometries occurring in Feynman integrals that contribute to the scattering of black holes in the post-Minkowskian (PM) expansion. These geometries become relevant to gravitational-wave production from binary mergers through the classical conservative potential. At 4PM, a K3 surface is known to occur in a three-loop integral, leading to elliptic integrals in the result. In this Letter, we identify a Calabi-Yau threefold in a four-loop integral, contributing at 5PM. The presence of this Calabi-Yau geometry indicates that completely new functions occur in the full analytical results...

Intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) are those between 100 and 105 solar masses ( M ⨀ ); their formation process is debated. One potential origin is the growth of less massive black holes, by merging with stars and compact objects within globular clusters (GCs). However, previous simulations have indicated that this process only produces IMBHs <500 M ⨀ , before gravitational wave recoil ejects them from the GC. We perform star-by-star simulations of GC formation, finding that high-density star formation in a GC's parent giant molecular cloud can produce sufficient mergers of massive stars to overcome that mass threshold...

The disagreement in the Hubble constant measured by different cosmological probes highlights the need for a better understanding of the observations or new physics. The standard siren method, a novel approach using gravitational-wave observations to determine the distance to binary mergers, has great potential to provide an independent measurement of the Hubble constant and shed light on the tension in the next few years. To realize this goal, we must thoroughly understand the sources of potential systematic bias of standard sirens...

Van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) of vertically stacked two-dimensional (2D) atomic crystals have been used to elicit intriguing phenomena stemming from strong electronic correlations, magnetic textures, and interlayer excitons spawned at the heterointerface. However, vdWHs comprised of heterointerfaces between these 2D atomic crystal lattices and molecular assemblies are emerging as equally intriguing platforms supporting properties to be harnessed for photovoltaic energy conversion, photodetection, spin-selective charge injection, and quantum emission...

The conceptual merger of relay catalysis with dynamic kinetic resolution strategy is reported to enable regio- and enantioselective C(sp3)-H bond arylation of aliphatic alcohols, forming enantioenriched β-aryl alcohols typically with >90:10 enantiomeric ratios (up to 98:2 er) and 36-74% yields. The starting materials bearing neighbouring stereogenic centres can be converted to either diastereomer of the β-aryl alcohol products, with >85:15 diastereomeric ratios determined by the catalysts...

Kidney exchange programs (KEPs) aim to find compatible kidneys for recipients with incompatible donors. Patients without a living donor depend upon deceased donor (DD) donations to get a kidney transplant. In India, a ©DD donates kidneys directly to a©DD wait-list. The idea of initiating an exchange chain starting from a ©DD kidney is proposed in a few articles (and executed in Italy in 2018), but no mathematical formulation has been given for this merger. We have introduced an integer programming formulation that creates ©DD-initiated chains, considering both paired exchange registry and ©DD allocations simultaneously and addressing the overlap issue between the exchange registry and ©DD wait-list as recipients can register for both registries independently...

OBJECTIVES: End-stage congenital heart disease in children with heterotaxy syndrome might necessitate heart transplantation. Heart transplantation in heterotaxy patients can be associated with several technical (e.g. redo, systemic/pulmonary-venous/situs anomalies, pulmonary artery reconstruction), and extra-cardiac (e.g. ciliary dyskinesia, infections, gastrointestinal) challenges. We aim to examine if heterotaxy syndrome is associated with increased early or late transplantation risks...

The thyroid in Graves' disease undergoes a considerable divergence in size and position from the normal anatomy. However, knowledge of the pathological anatomy related to the change, which is required before planned surgical or local intervention, or diagnosis, is neglected. To investigate Graves' disease, we well-established a model of mice that successfully mimics all the signs presented in the clinic. Under a long-term immunization (35 weeks), the animals displayed a big heterogeneity in thyroid size, like the cases of natural occurrence...

While aiming at sustainable synthesis, organic electrosynthesis has attracted increasing attention in the past few years. In parallel, with a deeper understanding of catalyst and ligand design, 3d transition-metal catalysis allows the conception of more straightforward synthetic routes in a cost-effective fashion. Owing to their intrinsic advantages, the merger of organic electrosynthesis with 3d transition-metal catalysis has offered huge opportunities for conceptually novel transformations while limiting ecological footprint...

Gene discovery reveals new biology, expands the utility of marker-assisted selection, and enables targeted mutagenesis. Still, such discoveries can take over a decade. We present a general strategy, "Agile Genetics," that uses nested, structured populations to overcome common limits on gene resolution. Extensive simulation work on realistic genetic architectures shows that, at population sizes of >5000 samples, single gene-resolution can be achieved using bulk segregant pools. At this scale, read depth and technical replication become major drivers of resolution...

This paper estimates efficiency measures for the banking system in Chile for the period 2000-2019. In contrast to previous studies, we use input-distance functions, introduce the nonparametric slack-based model, and choose the intermediate inputs approach in determining inputs and outputs. Our results suggest that the Chilean system has achieved relatively high levels of efficiency, although with no significant variation over the sample period. Ownership (government, foreign and public) and size had a positive impact on efficiency...

For the first time we analyze gravitational-wave strain data using waveforms constructed from strong gravity simulations of cosmic string loops collapsing to Schwarzschild black holes; a previously unconsidered source. Since the expected signal is dominated by a black-hole ringdown, it can mimic the observed gravitational waves from high-mass binary black hole mergers. To illustrate this, we consider GW190521, a short duration gravitational-wave event observed in the third LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA observing run. We show that describing this event as a collapsing cosmic string loop is favored over previous cosmic string analyses by an approximate log Bayes factor of 22...

Vorticity has recently been suggested to be a property of highly spinning black holes. The connection between vorticity and limiting spin represents a universal feature shared by objects of maximal microstate entropy, so-called saturons. Using Q-ball-like saturons as a laboratory for black holes, we study the collision of two such objects and find that vorticity can have a large impact on the emitted radiation as well as on the charge and angular momentum of the final configuration. As black holes belong to the class of saturons, we expect that the formation of vortices can cause similar effects in black hole mergers, leading to macroscopic deviations in gravitational radiation...

Myocyte fusion is a pivotal process in the development and regeneration of skeletal muscle. Failure during fusion can lead to a range of developmental as well as pathological consequences. This review aims to comprehensively explore the intricate processes underlying myocyte fusion, from the molecular to tissue scale. We shed light on key players, such as the muscle-specific fusogens - Myomaker and Myomixer, in addition to some lesser studied molecules contributing to myocyte fusion. Conserved across vertebrates, Myomaker and Myomixer play a crucial role in driving the merger of plasma membranes of fusing myocytes, ensuring the formation of functional muscle syncytia...

An iron-catalyzed photochemical sulfinamidation of hydrocarbons with N -sulfinylamines has been developed. The merger of ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) of FeCl3 with hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) process is the key for the generation of alkyl radicals from hydrocarbons, and the resultant alkyl radicals were readily trapped by N -sulfinylamines to produce structurally diverse sulfinamides. Contrary to traditional methods that inevitably use sensitive organometallic reagents and prefunctionalized substrates, our approach features simple operation and the wide availability of starting materials...
