Chrononutrition is the field of nutritional science that investigates the relationship between food intake, timing of food intake, and their effects and influence on circadian rhythms and overall health. By aligning eating patterns with body's internal clock, optimisation of metabolic processes, improvements of various aspects of health can be achieved. Cardiovascular (CV) and metabolic diseases remain the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Notably, in the US alone, approximately half of all cardiometabolic deaths are attributed to modifiable dietary factors, suggesting that dietary changes could result in dramatic increases in lifespan and its related quality of life...

Regulation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation from radical to non-radical pathways is an emerging focus of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) due to its superiority of anti-interference to complex wastewater. However, the detailed correlation mechanism between the defect structure of the catalyst and the regulation of radicals/non-radicals remains unclear. Herein, natural chalcopyrite (CuFeS2 ) with different levels of S vacancies created by a simple NaBH4 reduction process was employed to explore the above-mentioned underlying mechanism for constructing high efficiency and low cost of catalyst towards AOPs...

The Gongxin River is one of the main rivers in the Dashan Region of Anhui Province in China, which is a Se-rich and high-Cd area, but no research has focused on the concentration, source, antagonism, and health risks of Se and TMs in fish. In this study, 120 fish samples (14 species), 24 sediment samples, and 24 water samples were collected to investigate the antagonistic effects, sources, and health risks of TMs and Se in fish from a typical selenium-rich and high cadmium region. Zn and Se in fish from the Gongxin River were higher than in the background, which might be attributed to the different feeding habits of different fish species...

Organisms adapt to their environment through different pathways. In vertebrates, xenobiotics are detected, metabolized and eliminated through the inducible xenobiotic-metabolizing pathways (XMP) which can also generate reactive toxic intermediates. In this review, we will discuss the impacts of the chemical exposome complexity on the balance between detoxication and side effects. There is a large discrepancy between the limited number of proteins involved in these pathways (few dozens) and the diversity and complexity of the chemical exposome (tens of thousands of chemicals)...

Bumblebees are a genus of pollinators (Bombus) that play important roles in natural ecosystem and agricultural production. Several bumblebee species have been recorded as under population decline, and the proportion of species experiencing population decline within subgenus Thoracobombus is higher than average. Bombus opulentus is 1 species in Thoracobombus, but little is known about its recent population dynamics. Here, we employed conservation genomics methods to investigate the population dynamics of B. opulentus during the recent past and identify the likely environmental factors that may cause population decline...

BACKGROUND: Overwhelming evidence highlights the negative impact of substance use on HIV care and treatment outcomes. Yet, the extent to which alcohol use disorder (AUD) and other substance use disorders (SUD) services have been integrated within HIV clinical settings is limited. We describe AUD/SUD screening and treatment availability in HIV clinical sites participating in the International epidemiology Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA) consortium. METHODS: In 2020, 223 IeDEA HIV clinical sites from 41 countries across seven geographic regions completed a survey on capacity and practices related to management of AUD/ SUD...

Radium-223 dichloride is the first approved alpha particle-emitting radiopharmaceutical for patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer with symptomatic bone metastases and no known visceral metastases. A large percentage of intestinal enrichment and a slow clearance rate were the main causes of gastrointestinal adverse events after 223 RaCl2 administration. The molecular weight of sodium alginate in aqueous solution was determined to be 656 kDa. Sodium alginate exhibits a higher affinity for adsorbing Ra2+ compared to other metal ions belonging to the second main group...

Paraquat is a highly toxic quaternary ammonium herbicide. It can damage the functions of multiple organs and cause irreversible pulmonary fibrosis in the human body. However, the toxicological mechanism of paraquat is not yet fully understood, and due to the lack of specific antidotes, the clinical treatment of paraquat intoxication is still a great medical challenge. In-depth research on its toxicity mechanism, toxicokinetics, and effective antidotes is urgently demanded. A new molecular imaging technique, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI), can simultaneously achieve quantitative and spatial analysis and offer an alternative, distinct, and useful technique for paraquat intoxication and consequent detoxication...

Gekko japonicus possesses flexible climbing and detoxification abilities under insectivorous habits. Still, the evolutionary mechanisms behind these traits remain unclarified. This study presents a chromosome-level G. japonicus genome, revealing that its evolutionary breakpoint regions were enriched with specific repetitive elements and defense response genes. Gene families unique to G. japonicus and positively selected genes are mainly enriched in immune, sensory, and nervous pathways. Expansion of bitter taste receptor type 2 primarily in insectivorous species could be associated with toxin clearance...

The polychaete Capitella is a typical member of the 'thiobiome', and is commonly used as an eutrophication indicator species in environmental assessment studies. To deal with a sulfide-rich and poisonous surrounding, cells in close contact with the environment, and thus able to play a major role in detoxication and survival, are circulating cells. This work aimed to morpho-functionally describe the circulating coelomic cells of Capitella from the English Channel inhabiting the sulfide-rich mud in Roscoff Harbor...

BACKGROUND: Persistent accumulation and hindered clearance of toxins from tissues over time may promote the development and exacerbation of several diseases. Hepatic metabolic detoxification is a key physiological process responsible for the clearance of toxic substances from the body. A healthy diet with nutritional dietary supplementation may support metabolic detoxification and help mitigate the negative effects of toxin burden. METHODS: A multicenter, randomized, single-blind, controlled trial was conducted to test the effects of a dietary detoxification product (detox; n = 20) versus an active dietary control product (active control; n = 20) on selected biomarkers of metabolic detoxification, general health, and well-being following 28 days of dietary supplementation...

Fluxofenim has emerged as a promising herbicide safener; however, it's underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here, we screened two inbred lines 407B and HYZ to investigate the detoxication of fluxofenim in mitigating metolachlor damage in sorghum. Metolachlor inhibited seedling growth in both 407B and HYZ, while, fluxofenim could significantly restore the growth of 407B, but not effectively complement the growth of HYZ...

In patients with portal hypertension, there are many complications including cardiovascular abnormalities, hepatorenal syndrome, ascites, variceal bleeding, and hepatic encephalopathy. The underlying mechanisms are not yet completely clarified. It is well known that portal hypertension causes mesenteric congestion which produces reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS has been associated with intestinal mucosal injury, increased intestinal permeability, enhanced gut bacterial overgrowth, and translocation; all these changes result in increased endotoxin and inflammation...

The biological reduction of selenite (Se(iv)) or tellurite (Te(iv)) to Se0 or Te0 has received increasing attention, as related studies have favored the development of Se/Te pollution control methods. In the presence of the electron donor, the microbes acquired energy and transferred electrons to Se(iv) or Te(iv) to achieve their detoxication. However, the microbial electron transfer pathways involved in this process are still not fully understood. In this study, we reported that marine Shewanella sp.
