OBJECTIVE: To assess relationship between Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) associated vasculitis and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). METHODS: This is a retrospective study design. The patients were identified using a preset criteria of patients who have the diagnosis of ANCA associated vasculitis including a diagnosis of granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) or microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) or eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) with overlapping inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis) in the time period from 01/01/2020 to 08/03/2023...

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: Critical thinking and evidence-based dentistry are skills that dental students are required to demonstrate, but monitoring and quantifying progress can be challenging. This study is investigating whether the HEIghten critical thinking assessment (HCTA) could be used as a potential tool, both for use prior to admitting students, and to monitor whether the students' skills improve over their time at dental school. METHODS: Freshman dental students (n = 92) were given the HCTA during their first semester of dental school...

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit excellent electronic and photoelectric properties under pressure, prompting researchers to investigate their structural phase transitions, electrical transport, and photoelectric response upon compression. Herein, the structural and photoelectric properties of layered ZrS2 under pressure using in situ high-pressure photocurrent, Raman scattering spectroscopy, alternating current impedance spectroscopy, absorption spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations are studied...

Bismuth telluride (Bi2 Te3 )-based alloys have been extensively employed in energy harvesting and refrigeration applications for decades. However, commercially produced Bi2 Te3 -based alloys using the zone-melting (ZM) technique often encounter challenges such as insufficient mechanical properties and susceptibility to cracking, particularly in n-type Bi2 Te3 -based alloys, which severely limit the application scenarios for bismuth telluride devices. In this work, we seek to enhance the mechanical properties of n-type Bi2 Te2...

Pb plays an important role in determining the morphologies and mechanical properties of the Mg2 Si phase in Mg-2.5Si- x Pb alloys. As the amount of Pb increases from 0.4 wt.% to 1 wt.%, the primary Mg2 Si phase is refined during solidification. Its morphologies transform from equiaxed-dendrite to polygonal and finally to roughly circular. The key reason for morphology evolution is the preferential adsorption of Pb atoms on Mg2 Si {100} surfaces to suppress the growth rate along the ⟨100⟩ directions, which is demonstrated by the adsorption model based on first principles...

The aim of this study was to assess the influence of thermocompression conditions on lignocellulosic biomasses such as sugarcane bagasse (SCB) in the production of 100% binderless bio-based materials. Five parameters were investigated: pressure applied (7-102 MPa), molding temperature (60-240 °C), molding time (5-30 min), fiber/fine-particle ratio (0/100-100/0) and moisture content (0-20%). These parameters affected the properties and chemical composition of the materials. The density ranged from 1198 to 1507 kg/m3 , the flexural modulus from 0...

The literature suggests that the yield strain of cortical bone is invariant to its stiffness (elastic modulus) and strength (yield stress). However, data about intra-individual variations, e.g., the influence of different collagen/mineral organisations observed in bone aspects withstanding different habitual loads, are lacking. The hypothesis that the yield strain of human cortical bone tissue, retrieved from femoral diaphyseal quadrants subjected to different habitual loads, is invariant was tested. Four flat dumbbell-shaped specimens were machined from each quadrant of the proximal femoral diaphysis of five adult donors for a total of 80 specimens...

We report a new nanoporous amorphous carbon (NAC) structure that achieves both ultrahigh strength and high electrical conductivity, which are usually incompatible in porous materials. By using modified spark plasma sintering, we create three amorphous carbon phases with different atomic bonding configurations. The composite consists of an amorphous sp2-carbon matrix mixed with amorphous sp3-carbon and amorphous graphitic motif. NAC structure has isotropic electrical conductivity of up to 12,000 S/m, a Young's modulus of up to ∼5 GPa, and Vickers hardness of over 900 MPa...

This work theoretically introduces PHOTH-Graphene (PHOTH-G), a novel 2D planar carbon allotrope formed by 4-5-6-7-8 carbon rings. PHOTH-G emerges as a narrow band gap semiconducting material with low formation energy, demonstrating good stability under thermal and mechanical conditions. Van der Waals (vdW) assembly of low-dimensional materials has proven the capability of creating structures with on-demand properties. It is predicted that the vdW encapsulation can induce a local high-pressure of a few GPa, which will strongly modify the structure and property of trapped materials. Here, we report on the structural collapse of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) induced by the vdW encapsulation. By simply covering CNTs with a hexagonal boron nitride flake, most of the CNTs (≈77%) convert from a tubular structure to a collapsed flat structure...

Spider silk exhibits an excellent combination of high strength and toughness, which originates from the hierarchical self-assembled structure of spidroin during fiber spinning. In this work, superfine nanofibrils are established in polyelectrolyte artificial spider silk by optimizing the flexibility of polymer chains, which exhibits combination of breaking strength and toughness ranging from 1.83 GPa and 238 MJ m-3 to 0.53 GPa and 700 MJ m-3 , respectively. This is achieved by introducing ions to control the dissociation of polymer chains and evaporation-induced self-assembly under external stress...

For hydride superconductors, each significant advance is built upon the discovery of novel H-based structural units, which in turn push the understanding of the superconducting mechanism to new heights. Based on first-principles calculations, we propose a metastable LiH4 with a wavy H layer composed of the edge-sharing pea-like H18 rings at high pressures. Unexpectedly, it exhibits pressure-insensitive superconductivity manifested by an extremely small pressure coefficient (d T c /d P ) of 0.04 K/GPa. This feature is attributed to the slightly weakened electron-phonon coupling with pressure, caused by the reduced charge transfer from Li atoms to wavy H layers, significantly suppressing the substantial increase in the contribution of phonons to T c ...

In extreme and nanoconfinement conditions, the tetrahedral arrangement of water molecules is challenged, resulting in a rich and new phase behavior unseen in bulk phases. The unique phase behavior of water confined in hydrophobic nanoslits has been previously observed, such as the formation of a variety of two-dimensional (2D) ices below the freezing temperature. The primary identified 2D ice phase, termed square tube ice (STI), represents a unique arrangement of water molecules in 2D ice, which can be viewed as an array of 1D ice nanotubes stacked in the direction parallel to the confinement plane...
