Viral and paraviral exanthems are the most common exanthems in children and are often the reason for a medical evaluation, especially in pediatric primary care and emergency rooms. Familiarity with the various eruptions is important for early diagnosis and patient management as well as minimizing the risk of infection. In this review, we present the newly described entities reactive infectious mucocutaneous eruptions (RIME) and the pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome (PIMS). In addition, atypical manifestations of Gianotti-Crosti syndrome and hand, foot, and mouth disease are discussed...

Dermatological diseases are among the most common travel-associated diseases. In particular, viral infections not only with tropical and subtropical pathogens, but also with viruses common in Germany, which are often accompanied by skin rashes and general symptoms, are of great importance. In addition to an accurate travel history and possible risk exposures, epidemiological information on country-specific risks in combination with molecular and serological analyses is helpful in making the correct diagnosis...

Hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) is a viral infection frequently encountered in the pediatric age group. Common culprits in such manifestations are coxsackievirus A16 and human enterovirus 71. The patient presents febrile with erythematous papulovesicular exanthems in the mouth, palms, and soles. HFMD is self-limiting in nature with a rare-complication rate. Onychomadesis is proximal nail separation while Beau's lines are whitish transverse lines and considered a rare complication of HFMD. Both allude to halted nail-matrix proliferation, and the pathophysiology behind such manifestations is still not yet understood...

Livedo reticularis-like eruptions have been described in different viral infections. In patients with COVID-19, livedo reticularis-like rashes are usually mild, typically present in a symmetric distribution and mostly involve the lower limbs. A case of livedo reticularis located exclusively on the breasts of a girl with mild systemic symptoms of COVID-19 is presented. Coagulation studies were normal and findings disappeared within 1 week.

Maculopapular eruptions are frequently described as large areas of rash characterised by red, small, confluent bumps. They are frequently puzzling for the attending clinician due to the multiple possible aetiologies. Accurate diagnosis is important because treatment varies depending on the aetiology, and some rashes can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. Common aetiologies implicated include drug allergies, infection-related (for example: viral exanthems, scarlet fever) and autoimmune conditions (for example: Still's disease)...

Morbilliform eruptions inspire a broad and varied differential spanning across inflammatory and infectious categories. The goal of this article is to help the clinician develop an approach toward the pediatric patient with a morbilliform eruption in the emergency room or hospital setting. The authors review several high-yield clinical scenarios with a focus on recently emerging and reemerging childhood diagnoses.

Human herpesvirus 6B (HHV-6B) is a T-lymphotropic virus and the etiological agent of exanthem subitum. HHV-6B is present in a latent or persistent form after primary infection and is produced in the salivary glands or transmitted to this organ. Infected individuals continue to secrete the virus in their saliva, which is thus considered a source for virus transmission. HHV-6B primarily propagates in T cells because its entry receptor, CD134, is mainly expressed by activated T cells. The virus then spreads to the host's organs, including the salivary glands, nervous system, and liver...

Cutaneous diseases such as psoriasis are often the first disease manifestations in HIV+ patients, with greater severity corresponding to a weaker immune system. Despite its prevalence, literature and placebo-controlled studies on the recognition of HIV as a cause of psoriasis are lacking, causing challenges to arise in its treatment. In this article, we illustrate a case of an HIV+ patient whose psoriasis drastically improved after the initiation of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) consisting of bictegravir, emtricitabine, and tenofovir alafenamide...

One of the most common patterns of presentations that have been described in COVID-19 patients includes the erythematous/papular/morbilliform eruptions. However, actually, the diffuse exanthems containing macules and papules were not specific to COVID-19, and even histopathology does not show any specific signs that could help to differentiate COVID-19 skin lesions from non-COVID-19 causes such as drugs or other viral infections. We present the case of a COVID-19-positive woman with a morbilliform rash, whose skin biopsy showed the presence of some peculiar cytopathic epidermal changes that could represent a possible distinctive histopathological feature related to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection The presence of viral particles in the keratinocytes with additional positivity of endothelial cells and eccrine glands by immunohistochemistry using an anti-SARS-CoV-2 Spike S1 antibodies supports a causal relation of the lesions with SARS-CoV-2 infection...

Cutaneous findings have increasingly been reported in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This review discusses associated skin findings in patients with COVID-19 in the inpatient setting, ranging from vasculopathy-related lesions associated with high hospitalization rate and poor prognosis to inflammatory vesicular and urticarial eruptions that are rarely associated with prolonged hospitalization. We also discuss other reported COVID-19 cutaneous manifestations such as Sweet's syndrome, purpuric eruptions, and Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children...

We present a case of a 10-month-old boy with urticaria multiforme in the course of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) contributes to skin lesions in both children and adults. The main cutaneous manifestations of this infection include pseudochilblains, urticaria and maculopapular eruptions. Urticaria multiforme is a common yet underrecognized exanthem in children that is precipitated by viral infections among other causes.

The incidence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related skin manifestations has progressively grown, in parallel with the global severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spreading. The available evidence indicates that cutaneous signs are heterogeneous and can be divided as follows: a) erythematous rashes, b) lesions of vascular origin, c) vesicular rashes, d) urticarial rashes, and e) acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP), erythema multiforme (EM) and other polymorphic/atypical reactions...

BACKGROUND: Descriptions of cutaneous findings associated with COVID-19 have not been consistently accompanied by histopathology or confirmatory testing for SARS-CoV-2. Enteroviruses (EV) have been linked to lymphocytic meningitis and exanthems, but they may also be involved in acute gastroenteritis (AGE), a condition whose aetiological agent often remains unidentified. In this work 1214 samples from individuals with AGE were studied with the aim of establishing the incidence of EV. The samples were collected between September and December in three different years and subjected to real-time genomic amplification in order to determine the viral load (VL). Of the 1214 samples studied, infection by a single virus was found in 328 cases (27%) and coinfection in 69 (5...
