Determination of the best condition for fractionation of degreased sugarcane wax for policosanol production using ethanol was investigated in this paper. The optimal conditions related to the dispersion time of wax in the solvent, ethanol degree, and solvent/wax ratio were 30 min, 90.03% v/v, and 14:1 v/w, respectively. The results were evaluated by measuring six response variables: higher fatty alcohol concentration, octacosanol concentration, impurity concentration (measured as α,β unsaturated aldehydes), yield, cost indicator, and the ratio of octacosanol vs other higher fatty alcohols (C30 + C32 + C34)...

Policosanol (PC) is a mixture of long-chain fatty alcohols that exhibits multiple biological activities, such as reducing blood lipid and cholesterol levels, lowering blood pressure, and extenuating liver inflammation. To assess PC's impact on cognitive behavior and function, PC was prepared from Ericerus pela wax using a reduction method and analyzed using gas chromatography (GC). A total of 60 mice were randomly divided into six groups of 10 animals each: control (0.5% CMC-Na solution, i.g.), model (0.5% CMC-Na solution, i...

Classically, vicariant phenomena have been essentially identified on the basis of biogeographical and ecological data. Here, we report unequivocal evidences that demonstrate that a physical-chemical characterization of the epicuticular waxes of the surface of plant leaves represents a very powerful strategy to get rich insight into vicariant events. We found vicariant similarity between Cercis siliquastrum L. (family Fabaceae , subfamily Cercidoideae ) and Ceratonia siliqua L. (family Fabaceae , subfamily Caesalpinoideae )...

Octacosanol (Oct), a kind of long-chain fatty alcohol extracted from rice bran was applied to study its effects on alleviating ulcerative colitis (UC). Oct was orally administered at 10 mg/kg (Oct-L) and 30 mg/kg (Oct-H) to dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced mice. Here, we reported that oral administration of 30 mg/kg Oct can significantly prevent the weight loss, colon shortening, and decrease the disease activity index (DAI) score. Oct-H supplementation modified the intestinal flora by lowering the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes (F/B) ratio, increasing the abundance of Prevotellaceae, S24-7, Turicibacter, and meanwhile decreasing Enterococcus and Stenotrophomonas...

The incidence of obesity has increased significantly on account of the alterations of living habits, especially changes in eating habits. In this study, we investigated the effect of octacosanol on lipid lowering and its molecular mechanism. High-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity mouse model was used in the study. Thirty C57BL/6J mice were divided into control, HFD, and HFD+Oct groups randomly, and every group included ten mice. The mice of HFD+Oct group were intragastrically administrated 100 mg/kg/day of octacosanol...

Leaf extract (70-210 mg/kg/day) and fractions (140 mg/kg/day) of S. anomalum were evaluated in hyperglycaemic rats induced using alloxan for effects on blood glucose, lipids and pancreas histology. More than 100 species of annual herb genus Suaeda widely distribute (Asia, North America, northern Africa and Europe), are rich in resources (about hundreds of millions of tons/Y) and have a long historical application. Most of them are mainly used for traditional food, feed and medicine. Recently, they have been employed to repair saline-alkali land and beautify the environment. So far, only 27 species have been reported on the bioactivity diversity, broad spectrum and effectiveness in clinical practice. Therefore, the in-depth and extensive research of Suaeda has become a research hotspot around the world...

The results showed that the contents of policosanols, tocopherols and phytosterols were affected by the extraction procedure. However, the fatty acid composition of the different oil extracts was nearly the same. Among the tested oils samples, cold pressed oil exhibited the strongest inhibitory activity against proteinase (93...

Most of the global sugar and ethanol supply trade comes from the harvesting of Saccharum officinarum (i.e., sugarcane). Its industrial processing results in numerous by-products and waste streams, such as tops, straw, filter cake, molasses and bagasse. The recovery of lipids (i.e., octacosanol, phytosterols, long-chain aldehydes and triterpenoids) from these residues is an excellent starting point for the development of new products for various application fields, such as health and well-being, representing an important feature of the circular economy...

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD), an age-related neurodegenerative disorder and a serious public health concern, is mainly caused by β-amyloid (Aβ)-induced toxicity. Currently, a limited number of drugs are effective against AD, and only a few are used for its treatment. According to traditional Chinese medicine, white wax is mainly composed of policosanol, hexacosanol, and octacosanol. Policosanol has been shown to reduce lipid levels in blood and alleviate the symptoms associated with diabetic complications and neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson's disease and AD...
