Benign fibrous histiocytoma also known as dermatofibroma is one of the common mesenchymal neoplasms. It commonly develops in young adult with female predominance and predilection for the extremities, particularly lower extremities. Implantation of epidermis in the dermis or subcutaneous tissues may lead to the formation of epidermal inclusion cyst, which is the most common type of epithelial cyst. Development of epidermal inclusion cyst within a benign fibrous histiocytoma is a rare occurrence. This is a unique case of two unrelated lesions...

The aim is to present a unique clinical case of a 62-year-old male with an ossifying fibroma (OF) in the left orbit. He presented with a slow-growing mass with bone consistency which easily shifted with palpation. After removal, it was given the histopathological diagnosis of osteoma. However, the lesion grew back rapidly and it became even larger 4 months later. After a computed tomography scan with a contrast medium, another surgery was performed. The histopathological diagnosis of the recurrent lesion was an epidermal cyst with secondary degenerative changes...

Tissue patterning is critical for the development and regeneration of organs. To advance the use of engineered reconstituted skin organs, we study cardinal features important for tissue patterning and hair regeneration. We find they spontaneously form spheroid configurations, with polarized epidermal cells coupled with dermal cells through a newly formed basement membrane. Functionally, the spheroid becomes competent morphogenetic units (CMU) that promote regeneration of tissue patterns. The emergence of new cell types and molecular interactions during CMU formation was analyzed using scRNA-sequencing...

BACKGROUND: In laparoscopic surgery, the trocar is often inserted through the umbilicus because of the ease of insertion and inconspicuous postoperative scar formation. However, postoperative complications that require plastic surgical intervention may occur to the umbilicus. METHODS: We reviewed 14 patients who received plastic surgery for umbilical issues following gynecologic laparoscopic surgery in our department from January 2015 to September 2021. RESULTS: Most complications requiring umbilical surgery post gynecologic laparoscopic surgery include local infections, scar contractures, ectopic endometriosis, and umbilical necrosis...

Melanoacanthomas are benign variations of seborrheic keratosis that have been known to mimic other common benign and malignant skin lesions. Therefore, the diagnosis typically requires biopsy and careful histologic examination. Here, we present the case of a 25-year-old woman initially diagnosed clinically with an epidermal inclusion cyst, but, on biopsy and further evaluation, was found to have histological features of an atypical or malignant melanoacanthoma. Contrary to typical cases of melanoacanthoma, histologic evaluation revealed atypical findings consistent with malignancy, such as tumor necrosis, marked cytologic atypia and pleomorphism, and numerous mitoses, including atypical forms, features consistent with malignancy (ie, similar to a squamous cell carcinoma in these areas)...

BACKGROUND: Most of superficial soft-tissue masses are benign tumors, and very few are malignant tumors. However, persistent growth, of both benign and malignant tumors, can be painful and even life-threatening. It is necessary to improve the differential diagnosis performance for superficial soft-tissue masses by using deep learning models. This study aimed to propose a new ultrasonic deep learning model (DLM) system for the differential diagnosis of superficial soft-tissue masses. METHODS: Between January 2015 and December 2022, data for 1615 patients with superficial soft-tissue masses were retrospectively collected...

Abdominal surgery can cause notable scars that adhere to the abdominal tissues below. Full scar removal is generally not recommended due to the risk of intestinal damage and delayed wound healing. Here, we describe a surgical scar-revision procedure for adherent abdominal scars that does not involve either opening the abdominal cavity or total scar removal. A 58-year-old woman exhibited an aesthetically displeasing hypertrophic adherent abdominal scar that extended from the umbilical fold to the pubic area and distorted the umbilicus...

Benign adnexal neoplasms are quite a common occurrence in adults, especially in the head and neck region. They raise suspicion for malignancy if there are red flag signs like rapid increase in size, pain, ulceration or recurrence. We hereby report a case of a middle-aged gentleman who consulted our surgical OPD with right-sided neck swelling, which was initially thought to be a dermoid cyst; on further evaluation, found to be a dermal sweat gland tumour with features of nodular hidradenoma. The point that is of interest but coincidence to note is that this swelling was preceded by a minor trauma...

This case report focuses on a rare presentation of a dermoid cyst within an inguinal hernia in a 15-year-old male patient. The patient presented with a four-day history of a persistent, non-reducible, physical exertion-related bulge in the left groin area, which improved upon lying supine. Ultrasound investigations revealed a complex cystic structure resembling a dermoid cyst within a left direct inguinal hernia. Post-operative histopathology confirmed the dermoid cyst with no signs of malignancy. This case emphasizes the need for a high degree of suspicion when dealing with inguinal swellings, as rare entities like epidermal cysts may mimic more common conditions like inguinal hernias...

This case report presents a young male patient with a 3-month history of a rapidly growing lower abdominal mass associated with lower urinary tract symptoms and recurrent urinary tract infection. Pelvic magnetic resonance imaging showed a large congenital cyst in the right seminal vesicle having a mass effect on the urinary bladder, rectum, and left ureter. Histopathologic findings from exploratory laparotomy showed an epidermal inclusion cyst with secondary inflammation and suppuration. This report adds to the literature by describing this unique location of an epidermoid cyst within the seminal vesicle...

An epidermal cyst, also known as an epidermoid cyst or epidermal inclusion cyst, is the most prevalent type of cutaneous cyst. This noncancerous lesion can appear anywhere on the body, typically presenting as an asymptomatic dermal nodule with a visible central punctum. In the case presented herein, an epidermal cyst with uncommon features was misdiagnosed as a lymphatic malformation based on preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A 61-year-old man came to us with a swollen left cheek that had been present for 11 months...

Stem cells in organoids self-organize into tissue patterns with unknown mechanisms. Here, we use skin organoids to analyze this process. Cell behavior videos show that the morphological transformation from multiple spheroidal units with morphogenesis competence (CMU) to planar skin is characterized by two abrupt cell motility-increasing events before calming down. The self-organizing processes are controlled by a morphogenetic module composed of molecular sensors, modulators, and executers. Increasing dermal stiffness provides the initial driving force (driver) which activates Yap1 (sensor) in epidermal cysts...
