Motivated by recent experimental observations of opposite Chern numbers in R-type twisted MoTe2 and WSe2 homobilayers, we perform large-scale density-functional-theory calculations with machine learning force fields to investigate moiré band topology across a range of twist angles in both materials. We find that the Chern numbers of the moiré frontier bands change sign as a function of twist angle, and this change is driven by the competition between moiré ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity...

INTRODUCTION: Radiation-induced pulmonary fibrosis (RIPF) is a chronic, progressive, irreversible lung interstitial disease that develops after radiotherapy. Although several previous studies have focused on the mechanism of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in lung epithelial cells, the essential factors involved in this process remain poorly understood. The DNA-dependent protein kinase catalytic subunit (DNA-PKcs) exhibits strong repair capacity when cells undergo radiation-induced damage; whether DNA-PKcs regulates EMT during RIPF remains unclear...

Fluorescent flippers have been introduced as small-molecule probes to image membrane tension in living systems.  This study describes the design, synthesis, spectroscopic and imaging properties of flippers that are elongated by one and two alkynes inserted between the push and the pull dithienothiophene domains.  The resulting mechanophores combine characteristics of flippers, reporting on physical compression in the ground state, and molecular rotors, reporting on torsional motion in the excited state, to take their photophysics to new level of sophistication...

In this work, we computed and analyzed, by means of density-based descriptors, the real-time evolution of both the locally excited (LE) and charge-transfer (CT) excited states for the planar and twisted conformations of the DMABN (4-( N , N -dimethylamino)benzonitrile) molecule using real-time time-dependent density functional theory (DFT) and three different exchange-correlation energy functionals (EXC) belonging to the same family (the PBE one). Our results based on the analysis of density-based descriptors show that the underlying EXC modifies the evolution in time of the density...

The ability to precisely identify crystal orientation as well as to nondestructively modulate optical anisotropy in atomically thin rhenium dichalcogenides is critical for the future development of polarization programmable optoelectronic devices, which remains challenging. Here, we report a modified polarized optical imaging (POI) method capable of simultaneously identifying in-plane (Re chain) and out-of-plane ( c -axis) crystal orientations of the monolayer to few-layer ReS2 , meanwhile, propose a nondestructive approach to modulate the optical anisotropy in ReS2 via twist stacking...

A 59-year-old male patient came to the outpatient department with complaints of left-sided hemicranial headache with drooping of the left upper eyelid (UL) for three days associated with difficulty in swallowing and deviation of the tongue. The patient had a history of vigorous coughing for the past 15 days for which he did not take any medications. He was thoroughly evaluated in the outpatient department and diagnosed with Horner's syndrome. Acute Horner's syndrome with pain is nearly a hallmark of carotid dissection, and MRI of the brain and orbit was thus advised...

Detection of amyloid β (Aβ) oligomers, regarded as the most toxic aggregated forms of Aβ, can contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Thus, the development of imaging probes for in vivo visualization of Aβ oligomers is crucial. However, the structural uncertainty regarding Aβ oligomers makes it difficult to design imaging probes with high sensitivity to Aβ oligomers against highly aggregated Aβ fibrils. In this study, we developed Aβ oligomer-selective fluorescent probes based on triphenylmethane dyes through screening of commercially available compounds followed by structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies on cyclic or acyclic 4-dialkylamino groups...

Optical chirality, which plays important roles in liquid crystal display and biological and chemical detection, has been attracting scientists' attention due to its potential applications in optical information processing. Usually, the chiral optical response of natural molecules is very weak. However, the emergence of metasurfaces offers a promising solution to solve this issue. By judiciously designing the geometry of meta-atoms, we have realized strong optical circular dichroism (CD) in both linear and nonlinear optical regimes...

The X-ray analysis and DFT calculations showed that the aromatic framework adopted a nonplanar structure with a twisted conformation about the newly formed single bond, which acts as a chiral axis. Interestingly, the X-ray structure obtained through the Hirshfeld atom refinement revealed short interatomic distances between the inner hydrogen atoms (1...

We present a case of nasopalatine duct cyst in a 35-yearold female. The cyst was diagnosed based on the presence of only one clinical symptom and no obvious clinical signs, which is a relatively rare occurrence. However, the radiographic and histological presentation of this lesion was typical of a nasopalatine duct cyst. Therefore, this case report aims to highlight the variable presentations of the nasopalatine cyst, which is often misdiagnosed and treated as an endodontic infection.

Hydrogenases catalyze hydrogen/proton interconversion that is normally electrochemically reversible (having minimal overpotential requirement), a special property otherwise almost exclusive to platinum metals. The mechanism of [NiFe]-hydrogenases includes a long-range proton-coupled electron-transfer process involving a specific Ni-coordinated cysteine and the carboxylate of a nearby glutamate. A variant in which this cysteine has been exchanged for selenocysteine displays two distinct changes in electrocatalytic properties, as determined by protein film voltammetry...
