INTRODUCTION: Reference intervals and reference curves provide clinicians with a point of reference when evaluating patients' laboratory test results. In practical applications, the 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles of healthy reference population are typically used as lower and upper reference limits. Guidelines outlining analytical and methodological steps involved in reference intervals and curves estimation are available and there have been large-scale world-wide initiatives to provide reference intervals and curves for children...

The coordinating role of nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) in cellular function is undeniable. Evidence indicates that this transcription factor exerts massive regulatory functions in multiple signaling pathways concerning redox homeostasis and xenobiotics, macromolecules, and iron metabolism. Being the master regulator of antioxidant system, Nrf2 controls cellular fate, influencing cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, resistance to therapy, and senescence processes, as well as infection disease success...

Hemochromatosis, either hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) or secondary hemochromatosis, consists of the accumulation of iron in the liver, heart, and other organs. It leads to end-organ damage in a proportion of affected subjects. Although liver-related morbidity (cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma [HCC]) and mortality are well established, the frequency of these complications remains controversial. The aim of this study is to examine the rate of hospitalization and the incidence of iron overload-related comorbidities in patients with hemochromatosis between the years of 2002 and 2010...

Thymoma is a rare type of malignancy but is considered one of the most common neoplasms that occur in the anterior mediastinum. A large proportion of thymomas are associated with paraneoplastic syndromes, such as myasthenia gravis. Whenever feasible, the standard of care for the treatment of thymoma should focus on the control of paraneoplastic syndromes, surgical resection, and adjuvant therapy if appropriate. A 36-year-old female patient with a significant past medical history of obesity and iron deficiency anemia who underwenten bloc resection of thymoma three months prior now presented to the benign hematology clinic to establish care for the management of anemia...

BACKGROUND: Transfusion is discouraged in hemodynamically stable children with severe iron deficiency anemia (IDA). Intravenous (IV) iron sucrose (IS) could be an alternative for some patients; however, there is a paucity of data on its use in the paediatric emergency department (ED). METHODS: We analyzed patients presenting with severe IDA at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) ED between September 1, 2017, and June 1, 2021. We defined severe IDA as microcytic anemia <70 g/L and either a ferritin <12 ng/mL or a documented clinical diagnosis...

As of December 2021, all former Communist countries from Central and Eastern Europe were still lagging behind in terms of COVID-19 vaccination rates in Europe. Can institutional legacy explain, at least in part, this heterogeneity in vaccination decisions across Europe? To study this question we exploit novel data from the second wave of the SHARE (Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe) COVID-19 Survey fielded in Summer (2021) that covers older individuals in 27 European countries. First, we document lower COVID-19 vaccine take-up amongst those who were born under Communism in Europe...

Pink snow mold, caused by a phytopathogenic and psychrotolerant fungus, Microdochium nivale, is a severe disease of winter cereals and grasses that predominantly occurs under snow cover or shortly after its melt. Snow mold has significantly progressed during the past decade, often reaching epiphytotic levels in northern countries and resulting in dramatic yield losses. In addition, M. nivale gradually adapts to a warmer climate, spreading to less snowy territories and causing different types of plant diseases throughout the growing period...

Ferritinophagy is one of the most recent molecular mechanisms affecting cardiac function. In addition, it is one of the pathways by which doxorubicin, one of the anticancer drugs commonly used, negatively impacts the cardiac muscle, leading to cardiac function impairment. This side effect limits the use of doxorubicin. Iron chelators play an important role in hindering ferritinophagy. Antioxidants can also impact ferritinophagy by improving oxidative stress. In this study, it was assumed that the antioxidant function of melatonin could promote the action of deferoxamine, an iron chelator, at the level of ferritinophagy...

On their path to becoming sustainable facilities, it is required that wastewater treatment plants reduce their energy demand, sludge production, and chemical consumption, as well as increase on-site power generation. This study describes the results obtained from upgrading the sludge line of a full-scale wastewater treatment plant over 6 years (2015-2021) using three advanced process control strategies. The advanced process control tools were designed with the aim of (i) enhancing primary and secondary sludge thickening, (ii) improving anaerobic digestion performance, and (iii) reducing chemical consumption in the sludge line...

In this contribution, we report on the "free" [P(C2 F5 )2 F2 ]- ion and its ligand properties in transition metal complex chemistry. For this purpose, Ag[P(C2 F5 )2 F2 ] was treated with [{(Et2 N)3 P═N}3 P═NHC(CH3 )3 ]Cl ([EtP4 H]Cl) to yield [EtP4 H][P(C2 F5 )2 F2 ], featuring a weakly coordinating phosphazenium cation. Due to the weak interaction between the cation and anion, the [P(C2 F5 )2 F2 ]- ion meets the so-called pseudo-gas-phase conditions. To determine the Tolman electronic parameter, [EtP4 H][Ni(CO)3 {P(C2 F5 )2 F2 }] was prepared from [EtP4 H][P(C2 F5 )2 F2 ] and [Ni(CO)4 ], facilitating the classification of the P(C2 F5 )2 F2 moiety as a moderately π-acidic ligand...

Augmented Intelligence (AI) systems have the power to transform health care and bring us closer to the quadruple aim: enhancing patient experience, improving population health, reducing costs, and improving the work life of health care providers. Earning physicians' trust is critical for accelerating adoption of AI into patient care. As technology evolves, the medical community will need to develop standards for these innovative technologies and re-visit current regulatory systems that physicians and patients rely on to ensure that health care AI is responsible, evidence-based, free from bias, and designed and deployed to promote equity...

Microorganisms produce various secondary metabolites for growth and survival. During iron stress, they produce secondary metabolites termed siderophores. In the current investigation, antifungal activity of catecholate siderophore produced by Escherichia coli has been assessed against Aspergillus nidulans . Exogenous application of the bacterial siderophore to fungal cultures resulted in decreased colony size, increased filament length, and changes in hyphal branching pattern. Growth inhibition was accompanied with increased intracellular iron content...

Introduction: Iron overload is a common feature of thalassemia intermedia due to regular blood transfusion and increased gastrointestinal iron absorption. Early detection and adequate iron chelator can decrease morbidity and mortality from iron overload. Liver iron concentration (LIC) by MRI T2* is the best non-invasive way to measure body iron stores. However, this method is expensive and not available nationwide in Indonesia. The aim of this study was to identify liver iron overload and correlation of transferrin saturation, serum ferritin, liver MRI T2* and LIC with transient liver elastography in adult thalassemia intermedia patients...

Moss bags were exposed for 6 months in the surroundings of two steelworks, a power station, and two parks. The concentrations of 19 elements were determined in the moss transplants by neutron activation analysis and atomic absorption spectrometry.
