INTRODUCTION: Brain death (BD) is known to compromise graft quality by causing hemodynamic, metabolic, and hormonal changes. The abrupt reduction of female sex hormones after BD was associated with increased lung inflammation. The use of both corticoids and estradiol independently has presented positive results in modulating BD-induced inflammatory response. However, studies have shown that for females the presence of both estrogen and corticoids is necessary to ensure adequate immune response...

BACKGROUND: Fungal keratitis is a severe eye infection that can result in blindness and visual impairment, particularly in developing countries. Fusarium spp. are the primary causative agents of this condition. Diagnosis of Fusarium keratitis (FK) is challenging, and delayed treatment can lead to serious complications. However, there is limited epidemiological data on FK, especially in tropical areas. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to describe the clinical, laboratorial and epidemiological characteristics of FK in a tropical semi-arid region of Brazil...

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to describe the clinical features and endothelial involvement in a case of Mpox virus keratitis by in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM). METHODS: This is a case report. RESULTS: A 35-year-old man presented with redness, photophobia, pain, tearing, and a low visual acuity of 0.09 (decimal) in the left eye with a 6-week history of Mpox and corneal trauma. Previous testing of blood, interdigital skin lesions, and conjunctival and eyelid margin swabs confirmed the presence of Mpox by polymerase chain reaction...

Acute calcific periarthritis (ACP) in the interphalangeal joints of the hand is rare, with less than 100 cases reported. A rare case of ACP in a proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint of the hand, in a young black woman, after acute trauma, is presented. She experienced severe pain and limited range of motion, and was medicated with an oral corticoid, which was followed by a rapid resolution of the symptoms. At six months, there were no signs of clinical or radiographic recurrence. Recognition of ACP allows for avoiding unnecessary treatments...

INTRODUCTION: Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2Is) have beneficial effects on the renal function of chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, although the types of patients suitable for this treatment remain unclear. METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted on CKD patients who were treated with SGLT2I at our department from 2020 to 2023. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) just before treatment was defined as the baseline and the difference between pre-and post-treatment eGFR slopes were used to compare the improvement of renal function...

OBJECTIVES: The need for glucocorticoid-sparing drugs (GCSD) remains an important issue and is an unmet need in the treatment of polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). We therefore aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of methotrexate (MTX) and of leflunomide (LEF) in daily clinical practice in PMR patients from Argentina. METHODS: A multicentre and observational study (medical records review) of PMR patients seen between 2007 and 2023, who had at least three months of follow-up after starting a GCSD, either MTX or LEF, was performed...

SARS‑CoV‑2 infection remains a hot topic; it is characterized by its multi-systemic involvement. Corticosteroid intake has been the subject of worldwide attention as a potentially effective treatment against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Corticosteroids are registered on the WHO list of essential medicines, easily accessible for a low price, and particularly useful for different categories of people. The authors highlight the impact of corticosteroid administration for COVID-19 treatment on the occurrence of aseptic osteonecrosis in the femoral head...

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE) is a rare disease which mainly consists of an abnormal eosinophile infiltration of the gastrointestinal tract. It's classified according to its location: eosinophilic esophagitis, eosinophilic gastritis, eosinophilic enteritis (including duodenum, jejunum and/or ileum) and eosinophilic colitis and degree of infiltration (mucosal, muscular, serosal). Depending on eosinophile concentration, type of EGE and the patient's condition it may manifest with different clinical presentations such as functional dyspepsia, abdominal pain, irritability, hypoproteinemia, diarrhea, anemia, among others...

The high prevalence of Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a real global health problem. Its complex pathophysiology involves different pathways. Over the last decade, the introduction of intravitreal treatments has dramatically changed the management and prognosis of DME. Among the different treatment options, inhibitors of vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) and intravitreal steroids implants represent the first-line therapy of DME. We conducted a review of electronic databases to compile the available evidence about the clinical management of DME in a clinical setting, with a special focus on treatment-naïve patients...

Ecological interactions and symbiosis between algae and fungi are ancient, widespread, and diverse with many independent origins. The heterotrophic constraint on fungal nutrition drives fungal interactions with autotrophic organisms, including algae. While ancestors of modern fungi may have evolved as parasites of algae, there remains a latent ability in algae to detect and respond to fungi through a range of symbioses that are witnessed today in the astounding diversity of lichens, associations with corticoid and polypore fungi, and endophytic associations with macroalgae...

BACKGROUND: Bullous Pemphigoid (BP) is the most common autoimmune blistering disease. Most patients are elderly and associate multiple comorbidities. Topical and systemic corticosteroids are considered as the first-line treatment for BP and immunosuppressors are used as steroid-sparing treatments but both have side effects and contraindications which are even more common in this elderly population. New treatments targeting interleukins and receptors related to BP pathogenesis have been proposed to decrease this side effects while achieving equal or better effectiveness response rates...

Burn injuries can result in a significant inflammatory response, often leading to hypertrophic scarring (HTS). Local drug therapies e.g. corticoid injections are advised to treat HTS, although they are invasive, operator-dependent, extremely painful and do not permit extended drug release. Polymer-based microneedle (MN) arrays can offer a viable alternative to standard care, while allowing for direct, painless dermal drug delivery with tailorable drug release profile. In the current study, we synthesized photo-crosslinkable, acrylate-endcapped urethane-based poly( ε -caprolactone) (AUP-PCL) toward the fabrication of MNs...

Synthetic glucocorticoids are often found in surface waters and can cause harmful effects to aquatic organisms such as amphibians. In this work we evaluated the effects of the drugs prednisone (PD) and prednisolone (PL) on developmental, molecular, blood, biochemical and histological markers. Aquarana catesbeianus tadpoles were exposed for 16 days to environmentally relevant concentrations of 0, 0.1, 1 and 10 µg/L of both drugs. PD increased the transcript levels of the enzyme deiodinase III (Dio3), the hormones cortisol and T4 and delayed development...

Among the numerous long COVID symptoms, olfactory dysfunction persists in ∼10 % of patients suffering from SARS-CoV-2 induced anosmia. Among the few potential therapies, corticoid treatment has been used for its anti-inflammatory effect with mixed success in patients. In this study, we explored its impact using hamster as an animal model. SARS-CoV-2 infected hamsters lose their smell abilities and this loss is correlated with damage of the olfactory epithelium and persistent presence of innate immunity cells...
