Bordetella bronchiseptica is a significant contributor to respiratory disease in pigs, leading to substantial economic losses in the swine industry worldwide. We isolated 52 B. bronchiseptica strains from 542 samples collected from pigs with atrophic rhinitis and bronchopneumonia in central China. Multi-locus sequence typing identified two prevalent sequence types: ST6 (69.23%) and ST7 (30.77%). PCR-based detection of seven virulence genes ( fhaB , prn , cyaA , dnt , bteA , fla , and bfrZ ) revealed that six of these genes were present in over 90% of the isolates, with bfrZ being the exception at 59...

Background : Hormonal changes during pregnancy have a substantial effect on the swelling of the mucous membrane in the nasal cavity, resulting in rhinitis and Eustachian tube dysfunction. The aim of the study was to assess subjective and objective changes in nasal cavity and Eustachian tube patency in the third trimester of pregnancy. Materials and Methods : The study group included fifty 18-41 year-old women in the third trimester of pregnancy. The control group consisted of 25 females aged 25 to 31 who were not pregnant...

Background : Aspergillus can cause fungal rhinosinusitis (FRS). We aimed to identify risk factors for sinonasal Aspergillus disease. Methods: Patients with a positive sinonasal mycological culture for Aspergillus species diagnosed in our hospital located in a continental climate were included in the 9-year retrospective study. Results: Of the 86 patients, 3 had invasive FRS (IFRS), 51 had fungal ball (FB) disease, and 32 had chronic rhinosinusitis with fungus (CFRS). In the IFRS group, all patients had a malignancy and were immunocompromised...

BACKGROUND: Asthma is the most common chronic disease among children and poses a significant threat to their health. This study aims to assess the relationship between various plasma proteins and childhood asthma, thereby identifying potential therapeutic targets. METHODS: Based on publicly available genome-wide association study summary statistics, we employed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach to elucidate the causal relationship between plasma proteins and asthma...

Allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS) is a subtype of chronic rhinosinusitis, characterized by excessive immune responses to environmental molds or fungi. The diagnosis and classification of AFRS into systemic and local types remain clinically challenging due to overlapping characteristics. This study investigated the prevalence of AFRS, its manifestation and associated factors in systemic and local AFRS. A total of 200 patients diagnosed with fungal rhinosinusitis underwent both skin provocation tests (SPT) and nasal provocation tests (NPT) to confirm AFRS and classify systemic and local types...

There is lack of clarity on whether pregnancies during COVID-19 resulted in poorer mode of delivery and birth outcomes in Ontario, Canada. We aimed to compare mode of delivery (C-section), birth (low birthweight, preterm birth, NICU admission), and health services use (HSU, hospitalizations, ED visits, physician visits) outcomes in pregnant Ontario women before and during COVID-19 (pandemic periods). We further stratified for pre-existing chronic diseases (asthma, eczema, allergic rhinitis, diabetes, hypertension)...

METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study analyzing the adverse events of the children undergoing subcutaneous immunotherapy with NHD. Adverse events included local and systemic adverse reactions (SRs) at the very early and late stage. Th2 polarization is essential for the pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis (AR). Th2 polarization's mechanism requires further understanding. IL-4 is the primary cytokine involved in Th2 response. Fibroblasts play a role in immune regulation. This study aims to elucidate the role of nasal mucosal fibroblast-derived IL-4 in the induction of Th2 responses. Nasal mucosal tissues were obtained from surgically removed samples from patients with nasal polyps, whether with or without AR. Fibroblasts were isolated from the tissues by flow cytometry cell sorting, and analyzed by RNA sequencing (RNAseq)...

Multiple risk factors have been associated with the development of atopic dermatitis (AD). Recent advances in understanding the role of genetics in this disease have been made, with discovery of the filaggrin (FLG) gene as the most notable so far. In addition to FLG gene mutations as a risk factor for AD, a positive family history of atopic or allergic disease in either parent has been shown to confer a greater risk of developing AD. Atopic dermatitis usually presents early in life and is thought to represent the initial step in the "atopic march," which is characterized by the development of other atopic diseases later in life such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, and/or rhinoconjunctivitis, food allergies, and hay fever...

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing condition that is characterized by itching and redness of the skin. Our modern usage of atopic dermatitis dates back to 1933, when Wise and Sulzberger first coined the term to signify the disease's close association with other respiratory atopy, such as bronchial asthma and allergic rhinitis. A recent systematic review of 69 cross-sectional and cohort studies has confirmed that AD is now a worldwide phenomenon with lifetime AD prevalences of well over 20% in many affluent country settings...

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinits is a prevalent condition, affecting a substantial proportion of the population. This study investigates the impact of ongoing biologic therapy, specifically with Dupilumab, on allergy diagnostics in patients with allergic rhinits. METHODS: Various tests, including the Skin Prick Test, serum IgE levels and Allergy Screening Panels, were examined for their effectiveness in detecting sensitizations during biologic treatment. RESULTS: The results indicate a significant decline in total IgE levels following biologic therapy initiation, aligning with previous findings on Dupilumab's inhibitory effects on IL-4 and IL-13...

For the first time 15 years ago, tablet allergen immunotherapy (T-AIT) formulations were approved by regulatory agencies for treating allergic rhinitis caused by grass pollen in adults and children aged >5 years. Extensive evidences existed about effectiveness and safety of AIT. However, the safety profile is particularly compelling in children. Generally, T-AIT causes local reactions, mostly in the oral cavity, that are usually mild-to-moderate and often self-resolving. However, systemic allergic reactions are also observed with T-AIT, anaphylaxis representing the most fearsome adverse event, considering that it occurs in subjects treated for allergic rhinitis...

BACKGROUND: This study assessed whether a modified immunotherapy schedule for allergic rhinitis could be safe and efficient. Ultra-rush immunotherapy (URIT) rapidly desensitizes patients to aeroallergens. Allergic rhinitis (AR) is considered a trivial disease and is often self-treated with over-the-counter drugs and home remedies. However, AR is a contributing risk factor for asthma associated with complications, including chronic cough, eosinophilic esophagitis, and otitis media with effusion. In AR, inflammation is primarily mediated by histamines. Guidelines advise using second-generation oral H1 antihistamines as the primary treatment for AR. Second-generation H1 antihistamines strongly prefer the H1 receptor, limiting their ability to enter the central nervous system...

Asthma and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are common respiratory disorders. They share characteristics such as airway obstruction, poor sleep quality, and low quality of life. They are often present as comorbidities, along with obesity, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and allergic rhinitis (AR), which impacts the disease's control. In recent years, there has been discussion about the association between these conditions and their pathophysiological and clinical consequences, resulting in worse health outcomes, increased healthcare resource consumption, prolonged hospital stays, and increased morbidity and mortality...
