CONTEXT: This study delves into the chemical nuances of thiophenols and their derivatives through a comprehensive computational analysis, moving beyond traditional energetic perspectives such as bond dissociation enthalpy and S-H dissociation dynamics. By employing the overlap model along with its topological descriptors (OP/TOP), quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), and local vibrational mode (LVM) theories, the research provides a deeper understanding of the S-H and C-S bonding scenarios in substituted thiophenols...

BACKGROUND: Obesity influences the development of osteoarthritis via low-grade inflammation. Progression of local inflammation (= synovitis) increased with weight gain in overweight and obese women compared to stable weight. Synovitis could be associated with subcutaneous fat (SCF) around the knee. Purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of weight loss on synovitis progression and to assess whether SCF around the knee mediates the relationship between weight loss and synovitis progression...

Liver diseases caused by viral infections, alcoholism, drugs, or chemical poisons are a significant health problem: Liver diseases are a leading contributor to mortality, with approximately 2 million deaths per year worldwide. Liver fibrosis, as a common liver disease characterized by excessive collagen deposition, is associated with high morbidity and mortality, and there is no effective treatment. Numerous studies have shown that the accumulation of mast cells (MCs) in the liver is closely associated with liver injury caused by a variety of factors...

Cultured reticulocytes can supplement transfusion needs and offer promise for drug delivery and immune tolerization. They can be produced from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), but the 45-day culture time and cytokine costs make large-scale production prohibitive. To overcome these limitations, we have generated IPSCs that express constitutive SCF receptor and jak2 adaptor alleles. We show that iPSC lines carrying these alleles can differentiate into self-renewing erythroblast (SRE) that can proliferate for up to 70 cell-doubling in a cost-effective, chemically-defined, albumin- and cytokine-free medium...

Digital dermatitis (DD) is an emerging disease in feedlot cattle. Our objective was to identify animal- and feedlot-level risk factors for DD by analyzing individual animal health records ( n = 1,209,883) and feedlot-level records from western Canadian feedlots ( n = 28) between 2014 and 2018, inclusive. The risk of a DD diagnosis was higher (incidence rate ratio (IRR) = 2.08, 95% CI 1.52 to 2.86) in cattle sourced from confined background operations (CB) versus cattle sourced from auction markets (AM). Conversely, ranch direct (RD) cattle were (IRR = 0...

In this study, we conducted an extensive investigation into broadband near-infrared luminescence of Cr3+ -doped Ca3 Y2 Ge3 O12 garnet, employing first-principles calculations within the density functional theory framework. Our initial focus involved determining the site occupancy of Cr3+ activator ions, which revealed a pronounced preference for the Y3+ sites over the Ca2+ and Ge4+ sites, as evidenced by the formation energy calculations. Subsequently, the geometric structures of the excited states 2 E and 4 T2 , along with their optical transition energies relative to the ground state 4 A2 in Ca3 Y2 Ge3 O12 :Cr3+ , were successfully modeled using the ΔSCF method...

Roll compaction (RC) is a cost-effective dry granulation method, widely implemented in the pharmaceutical industry. In early formulation development however, when the material availability is limited, being able to predict the most important parameters in RC, like gap width and specific compaction force (SCF), to obtain a target ribbon solid fraction (SF) would significantly improve the formulation development efficiency as it would avoid the need of performing experiments on the roller compactor itself. However, at the present state of things, experiments on RC mechanical simulators present an overestimation of the target SF, when compared to roller compactor SF values...

Intrinsic molecular programs and extrinsic factors including pro-inflammatory molecules are understood to regulate hematopoietic aging. This is based on foundational studies using genetic perturbation to evaluate causality. However, individual organisms exhibit natural variation in hematopoietic aging phenotypes and the molecular basis of this heterogeneity is poorly understood. Here, we generated individual single cell transcriptomic profiles of hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cell types in five young adult and nine middle-aged C57BL/6J female mice, providing a web-accessible transcriptomic resource for the field...

We propose a multimode interference-based optical fiber NHTSN sensor with a helical taper for simultaneous measurement of micro torsion and temperature. The sensor consists of single mode fiber (SMF), no-core fiber (NCF), and seven-core fiber (SCF). A helical taper is fabricated in the SCF using a flame heater, forming the SMF-NCF-Helical Taper SCF-NCF-SMF (NHTSN) structure. Theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrate that the introduction of helical taper not only imparts directionality to the torsion measurement, but also results in a significant improvement in torsion sensitivity due to the increased inter-mode optical path difference (OPD) and enhanced inter-mode coupling...

A diradical with engineered g-asymmetry was synthesized by grafting a nitroxide radical onto the [Y(Pc)2]˙ radical platform. Various spectroscopic techniques and computational studies revealed that the electronic structures of the two spin systems remained minimally affected within the diradical system. Fluid-solution Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) experiments revealed a weak exchange coupling with |J| ~ 0.014 cm-1, subsequently rationalized by CAS-SCF calculations. Frozen solution continuous-wave (CW) EPR experiments showed a complicated and power-dependent spectrum that eluded analysis using the point-dipole model...

SKP2 (S-phase kinase-associated protein 2) is a member of the F-box family of substrate-recognition subunits in the SCF ubiquitin-protein ligase complexes. It is associated with ubiquitin-mediated degradation in the mammalian cell cycle components and other target proteins involved in cell cycle progression, signal transduction, and transcription. Being an oncogene in solid tumors and hematological malignancies, it is frequently associated with drug resistance and poor disease outcomes. In the current review, we discussed the novel role of SKP2 in different hematological malignancies...

This study addresses the challenge of achieving foam with a high expansion ratio and poor mechanical properties, caused by the low melt viscosity of semi-crystalline polypropylene (PP). Through optimization and characterization of material composition and processing conditions, the obtained fiber-reinforced crosslinked PP/POE composite foam exhibits both low density and high performance...

The radionuclides 43 Sc, 44g/mSc, and 47 Sc can be produced cost-effectively in sufficient yield for medical research and applications by irradiating natTi and natV target materials with protons. Maximizing the production yield of the therapeutic 47 Sc in the highest cross section energy range of 24-70 MeV results in the co-production of long-lived, high-γ-ray-energy 46 Sc and 48 Sc contaminants if one does not use enriched target materials. Mass separation can be used to obtain high molar activity and isotopically pure Sc radionuclides from natural target materials; however, suitable operational conditions to obtain relevant activity released from irradiated natTi and natV have not yet been established at CERN-MEDICIS and ISOLDE...
