BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic anatomical resection of segment 7 (LARS7) remains a technically challenging procedure due to the deep anatomical location and the potential risk of injury to the right hepatic vein (RHV). Herein, we initiated an innovative technique of caudo-dorsal approach combined with the occlusion of the RHV and Pringle maneuver for LARS7 and presented the outcomes of our initial series. METHOD: Since January 2021, the patients who underwent LARS7 by using this novel technique were enrolled in this study...

Neuropathic pain is a frequent complaint in the neurology clinic. We present a case of a 31-year-old male with congenital absence of the inferior vena cava (AIVC) resulting in venous hypertension who complained of lower extremity pain interfering with his daily activities. His AIVC was thought to be incidental rather than causative of his pain complaints. His examination was consistent with peripheral neuropathy. Simple lifestyle adaptations, such as restriction of physical activity and leg elevation, were sufficient to relieve his symptoms...

Traumatic splenic rupture is rare in pregnant women; and multiple venous thromboses of the portal vein system, inferior vena cava and ovarian vein after caesarean section and splenectomy for splenic rupture has not been previously reported. This case report describes a case of multiple venous thromboses after caesarean section and splenectomy for traumatic splenic rupture in late pregnancy. A 34-year-old G3P1 female presented with abdominal trauma at 33+1 weeks of gestation. After diagnosis of splenic rupture, she underwent an emergency caesarean section and splenectomy...

Synthetic vascular grafts overcome some challenges of allografts, autografts, and xenografts but are often more rigid and less compliant than the native vessel into which they are implanted. Compliance matching with the native vessel is emerging as a key property for graft success. The current gold standard for assessing vessel compliance involves the vessel's excision and ex vivo biaxial mechanical testing. We developed an in vivo method to assess venous compliance and distensibility that better reflects natural physiology and takes into consideration the impact of a pressure change caused by flowing blood and by any morphologic changes present...

BACKGROUND: Right ventricular dysfunction (RVD) is a complication following congenital cardiac surgery in children and can lead to systemic venous congestion, low cardiac output, and organ dysfunction. Venous congestion can be transmitted backwards and adversely affect encapsulated organs such as the kidneys. PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between systemic venous congestion, as estimated by Venous Excess Ultrasound (VExUS), and the occurrence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in children with RVD following congenital heart surgery...

Duplicated inferior vena cava (D-IVC) is a relatively rare anatomical anomaly. Clinically, these anomalies are incidentally found on computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Lack of pre-operative identification of this congenital malformation can lead to incomplete protection against thromboembolism or hemorrhage. We present a case of a 71-year-old male with a duplicated inferior vena cava who underwent insertion of bilateral inferior vena cava filters for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) management...

BACKGROUND: The incidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the lower extremities is increasing in the younger population. However, there are fewer reported comparisons in the literature for lower extremity DVT. METHODS: Patients aged <40 years admitted with lower-extremity DVT between January 2018 and December 2023 were retrospectively analyzed and followed up for 1 year. RESULTS: A total of 61 patients were included in the study and divided into two groups: 33 patients over 30 years of age (middle-aged group) and 28 patients under 30 years of age (young group)...

This work extensively studied the vasculature of mice mammary fat pads (BALB/c and C57BL/6) with special reference to haematogenous drainage routes. Mammary fat pads were five pairs (first cervical, second and third thoracic, fourth abdominal and fifth inguinal), bilaterally symmetrical, extending laterally and continuously with the subcutaneous fascia. The superficial cervical artery and vein primarily accomplished the blood vasculature of the first mammary fat pad, while the lateral thoracic and external thoracic arteries and veins supplied the second and third mammary fat pads...

BACKGROUND: Renal and liver congestion are associated with adverse outcomes in patients with tricuspid regurgitation (TR). Currently, there are no valid sonographic indicators of fluid status in this population. Intra-renal venous Doppler (IRVD) is a novel method for quantifying renal congestion but its interpretation can be challenging in severe TR due to altered hemodynamics. This study explores the potential of portal vein Doppler (PVD) as an alternative marker for decongestion during volume removal in patients with severe TR...

Leiomyosarcomas of large vessels are rare. It is a malignant tumour and the vast majority of these tumours arose from the inferior vena cava. We report a rare case of portal vein leiomyosarcoma, in a 56-years-old female patient admitted for chronic abdominal pain with abdominal mass in the right hypochondrium all evolving in a context of deterioration in general condition. We performed an abdominopelvic CT scan and then a MRI with contrast agent which objectified a large tissue mass containing areas of necrosis at the level of the duodeno-pancreatic compartment communicating at a large angle with the portal trunk over its entire length from the hepatic hilum to the spleno-mesenteric confluence responsible for a portal cavernoma downstream...

An 81-year-old man underwent total arch replacement for thoracic aortic aneurysm 8 years ago and catheter ablation for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation 1 year ago. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed a mass in the right atrium, and the patient was admitted for close examination and treatment. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed a 23×17 mm large well-defined mass above the cavotricuspid isthmus. Two venous drainage cannulas were inserted directly to the superior vena cava and to the inferior vena cava via the right femoral vein, in order to avoid the direct contact with the right atrium prior to institution of cardiopulmonary bypass...

Testicular malignancies commonly affect adolescent and young adult males. BACKGROUND: Femoral ports are used in patients with indication to a totally implanted venous access device but with contraindication to chest-ports and brachial ports because of obstruction of the superior vena cava. In the last three decades, femoral ports have been implanted almost exclusively by cannulation of the common femoral vein at the groin, while the position of the tip has been assessed by X-ray. Acute liver failure is an uncommon presentation in the clinic. Common causes for acute liver failure include viral hepatitis and drug-related hepatotoxicity. However, acute liver failure due to Budd-Chiari syndrome is rare. This case highlights the importance of necessary constrast-enhanced imaging studies to rule out vascular etiologies of acute liver failure, in addition to common causes like viral or drug-induced hepatic failure. We present a case of a male Chinese patient who presented with nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and fever after eating a large amount of fatty food...

We report a case of severe mitral stenosis (MS) in a 58-year-old female from Guyana. Though rheumatic MS continues to be less prevalent in third-world countries, it poses a significant threat as far as morbidity and mortality are concerned. The modern definition of "Third World" is used to classify countries that are poor or developing. Countries that are part of the "third world" are generally characterized by (1) high rates of poverty, (2) economic and/or political instability, and (3) high mortality. The standard method of diagnosing MS in patients has been established as transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE), along with pertinent historical and physical exam findings...

In Northern Nigeria with a relatively high incidence of thromboembolic disease such as Deep vein thrombosis, reports on IVC filter placement are largely low. We report the feasibility of IVC filter placement on eight patients for the first time in a typical low-resource setting in Northern Nigeria...
