BACKGROUND: Action observation treatment (AOT) is an innovative therapeutic approach consisting in the observation of actions followed by their subsequent repetition. The standard version of AOT consists in the observation/imitation of a typically developed individual, which is proposed as model (TDM-AOT). AIM: This study aims to compare the effectiveness of AOT based on a pathological ameliorative model (PAM-AOT) versus TDM-AOT in improving upper limb ability in children with unilateral cerebral palsy (UCP)...

BACKGROUND: Exercise has been shown to reduce the rate of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease. Although motor coordination movements and poses in Ruesi Dadton (RD) exercises may improve cognitive function, RD is rarely used for MCI. To date, there is insufficient evidence on whether 12 weeks of RD exercise correlates with blood biomarkers related to neurogenesis and plasticity. AIM: To determine the effects on blood biomarkers of 12-week RD in MCI...

AIM: The aim of this study was to systematically review the current literature on the use of exergames as an exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation intervention for patients with heart failure. METHODS: PubMed, SCOPUS and CINAHL Plus databases were searched from January 2007 to August 2023. Studies considered eligible for inclusion had to report one or more of the following outcomes: functional capacity (e.g. VO2 max), quality of life, mortality, hospital admissions, physical activity level, and engagement/satisfaction of the intervention...

INTRODUCTION: Upper and lower limb spasticity is commonly associated with central nervous system disorders including stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, and spinal cord injury, but little is known about the concurrent treatment of upper and lower limb spasticity with botulinum toxins. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate onabotulinumtoxinA (onabotA) utilization and to determine if concurrent onabotA treatment of the upper and lower limbs has supported improvements in participants with spasticity...

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive and motor impairments are common among stroke survivors. Physical therapy is often used to improve the functional capacity of stroke survivors. However, limited adherence to rehabilitation programs is a challenge. Motivation plays a crucial role in the success of rehabilitation programs as it influences individual adherence to treatment and overall health outcomes. This review aims to identify current trends in motivational strategies used by healthcare professionals for stroke survivor rehabilitation...

This is the case of a 33-year-old male with traumatic paraplegic lumbar spinal cord injury after knife assault, who was unable to participate in an intensive inpatient rehabilitation course due to bilateral lower limb spasticity. For therapeutic management of spasticity at the bedside in the inpatient rehabilitation setting, we performed an epidural steroid injection to the right L4-L5 interspace. After the intervention, a significant decrease in spasticity was noted. The patient could subsequently tolerate sit-to-stand transfers with a standing frame and ambulate with the an exoskeleton device in inpatient physical therapy, significantly improving his overall functional level in therapies...

BACKGROUND/AIM: The treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS) does not cure the disease, but it is intended to reduce the intensity, duration, and frequency of symptoms. Rehabilitation therapy (RT), including an individualized physical therapy program (PTP) and adapted occupational therapy (OT), has benefits in terms of aerobic capacity, muscle strength, coordination, and ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL). The primary objective of this study was to examine the efficacy of RT comprising PTP, OT, and drug treatment (DT) versus DT alone in patients with MS...

BACKGROUND: An infection with SARS-CoV-2 can lead to persistent symptoms more than three months after the acute infection and has also an impact on patients' physical activity behaviour and sleep quality. There is evidence, that inpatient post-COVID rehabilitation can improve physical capacity and mental health impairments, but less is known about the change in physical behaviour and sleep quality. METHODS: This longitudinal observational study used accelerometery to assess the level of physical activity and sleep quality before and after an inpatient rehabilitation program...

Rehabilitation after an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction requires patience, devotion, and discipline. Rehabilitation should be individualized to each patient's specific need and sport. Return to sport is a continuum throughout the rehabilitation, and patients should not return to performance before passing a battery of muscle function tests and patient-reported outcomes, as well as change of direction-specific tests. Return to full participation should be an agreement between the patient, physical therapist, surgeon, and coach...

This article outlines the key points in the nonoperative treatment of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Initial evaluation and treatment of an acute knee injury, often performed by a physician with limited experience in the treatment of an ACL injury, follow the basic diagnostic workup that lead to the diagnosis. The principles of rehabilitation after ACL injury have changed from time based to criteria based, and the different phases based on physical criteria are described.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal metastases (PM) commonly occur in colorectal cancer patients. Systemic chemotherapy yields poor outcomes for these patients. It is hypothesised that traditional systemic chemotherapy is not very effective for this patient population. This study investigates to what extent systemic anti-cancer therapy crosses the peritoneal barrier. METHODS: In a Phase I study, eighteen patients received systemic oxaliplatin, 5-FU, and bevacizumab. Plasma and peritoneal fluid samples were collected to measure drug concentrations...

We also found that 78.4% had no disability certificate and 77.5% had incomplete psychological evaluation. INTRODUCTION: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major global health concern, characterised by ventilatory constraints, decreased cardiovascular fitness and reduced limb muscle function, profoundly affecting patients' quality of life. Aerobic training plays a crucial role in the treatment of COPD, but the variability in methodologies and incomplete reporting of key components in aerobic training trials limits the assessment of their effectiveness. This systematic review aims to critically evaluate the application of training principles and reporting of key components in aerobic training trials in randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in the COPD literature...
