BACKGROUND: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), a global surgical quality improvement initiative, reduces the length of stay in the hospital. Temporary stoma care for rectal cancer is complex, and patients require prolonged care services to adjust to the stoma. The shorter stay durations in the new model challenge the conventional care pathways and create new patient needs. PURPOSE: This study was designed to explore the supportive care needs of patients under the new surgical model to provide a reference for the design of ERAS nursing care plans...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Despite advances in the medical treatment of Crohn's disease (CD), many patients will still need bowel resections and face the subsequent risk of recurrence and re-resection. We describe contemporary re-resection rates and identify disease-modifying factors and risk factors for re-resection. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, population-based, individual patient data cohort study covering 47.4% of the Danish population, including all CD patients who underwent a primary resection between 2010 and 2020...

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the static and dynamic urodynamic parameters of reservoirs and continent conduits in continent cutaneous urinary diversion with catheterizable stoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 76 patients had augmented ileocystoplasty or continent urinary diversion with catheterizable urinary stoma based on Mitrofanoff principle and Yang-Monti procedure using subserous tunnel as continence mechanism. They were followed up for at least 6 months post-operatively for continence through stoma and divided into two groups (continents vs non-continent) according to stomal continence...

BACKGROUND: The optimal approach for ensuring both complete resection and preservation of anal function in rectal gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) remains unknown. The aim of this study was to clarify short-term and long-term outcomes after robotic radical surgery for rectal GIST. METHODS: A total of 13 patients who underwent robotic radical surgery for rectal GIST between December 2011 and April 2022 were included. All robotic procedures were performed using a systematic approach...

As we all acknowledge benefits of ostomies, they can come with significant morbidity, quality of life issues, and major complications, especially during reversal procedures. In recent years, we have started to observe that similar graft and patient survival can be achieved without ostomies in certain cases. This observation and practice adopted in a few large-volume transplant centers opened a new discussion about the necessity of ostomies in intestinal transplantation. There is still more time and randomized studies will be needed to better understand and analyze the risk/benefits of "No-ostomy" approach in intestinal transplantation...

Hirschsprung's disease is a dysmotility disease caused by lack of ganglion cells in the bowel wall that can affect varying lengths of the intestine. In extreme circumstances, there can be little remaining ganglionated bowel, and the patient becomes dependent on parental nutrition (PN) for survival. Intestinal transplant has been utilized to salvage these patients suffering terminal complications of PN. The question as to whether to reestablish intestinal continuity, and thus not require a stoma is vexed. However, data and experience would suggest this can be safely done with good functional results...

BACKGROUND: In several cases, a person can have an abnormal mass in the outer mandible or under the tongue and is usually accompanied with the decrease of saliva. Early and accurate examination is needed to diagnose this case. In this case report, we present two cases of salivary glands defect. The aim of this article is to submit two cases to review the etiology, risk factors, clinical manifestation, and examination methods of sialadenitis using a modified contrast injector to the duct of salivary gland...

PURPOSE: Stoma construction and closure are common surgical strategies in patients with colorectal cancer. The present study evaluated the influence of multiple incisional sites resulting from stoma closure on incisional hernia after colorectal cancer surgery. METHODS: The study included 1681 patients who underwent colorectal cancer surgery. Multiple incisional sites were defined as the coexistence of incisions at the midline and stoma closure sites. We retrospectively investigated the relationship between the presence of multiple incisional sites and incisional hernia development in patients with colorectal cancer...

This study aims to develop a predictive model for stoma non-closure in rectal cancer patients who underwent curative-intent low anterior resection. PURPOSE: Anastomotic leakage is a serious complication of colorectal cancer surgery, prolonging hospital stays and impacting patient prognosis. Preventive colostomy is required in patients at risk of anastomotic fistulas. However, it remains unclear whether the commonly used loop colostomy(LC) or loop ileostomy(LI) can reduce the complications of colorectal surgery. This study aims to compare perioperative morbidities associated with LC and LI following anterior rectal cancer resection, including LC and LI reversal...

It also seeks to predict the probability of LARS through a visual, quantitative, and graphical nomogram. This approach is expected to lower the risk of postoperative LARS in these patients and improve their quality of life through effective prevention and early intervention. Stoma prolapse is one of the most common late complications following stoma construction. Although prolapses can be managed conservatively, they often require surgical revision. This study aimed to describe a revision method called peristomal cerclage applied with local anesthesia to treat stoma prolapse. A 66-year-old male patient with advanced rectal cancer underwent sigmoid loop colostomy one year ago due to a distal occlusive tumor. A revision of the colostomy prolapse that developed postoperatively was planned...
