Knowing the genes involved in quantitative traits provides an entry point to understanding the biological bases of behavior, but there are very few examples where the pathway from genetic locus to behavioral change is known. To explore the role of specific genes in fear behavior, we mapped three fear-related traits, tested fourteen genes at six quantitative trait loci (QTLs) by quantitative complementation, and identified six genes. Four genes, Lamp, Ptprd, Nptx2, and Sh3gl, have known roles in synapse function; the fifth, Psip1, was not previously implicated in behavior; and the sixth is a long non-coding RNA, 4933413L06Rik, of unknown function...

OBJECTIVE: To describe the patterns of health care utilization among patients with chronic pelvic pain. METHODS: Deidentified administrative claims data from the OptumLabs Data Warehouse were used. Adult female patients who had their first medical claim for chronic pelvic pain between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2019, were included. Utilization was examined for 12 months after the index diagnosis. The greedy nearest neighbor matching method was used to identify a control group of individuals without chronic pelvic pain...

Bacterial predators are decisive organisms that shape microbial ecosystems. In this study, we investigated the role of iron and siderophores during the predatory interaction between two rhizosphere bacteria: Myxococcus xanthus, an epibiotic predator, and Sinorhizobium meliloti, a bacterium that establishes nitrogen-fixing symbiosis with legumes. The results show that iron enhances the motility of the predator and facilitates its predatory capability, and that intoxication by iron is not used by the predator to prey, although oxidative stress increases in both bacteria during predation...

Multimodal integration is crucial for human interaction, in particular for social communication, which relies on integrating information from various sensory modalities. Recently a third visual pathway specialized in social perception was proposed, which includes the right superior temporal sulcus (STS) playing a key role in processing socially relevant cues and high-level social perception. Importantly, it has also recently been proposed that the left STS contributes to audiovisual integration of speech processing...

BACKGROUND: Dravet syndrome (DS) is a Developmental and Epileptic Encephalopathy (DEE) with onset typically in infancy. Seizures are pharmaco-resistant, and neurodevelopment is compromised in almost all children. There is limited data on the impact of the condition on the family, support needs and hopes and fears in Sweden. METHODS: Interviews were undertaken with the caregivers of 36 of 48 (75%) living children with DS in Sweden focusing on the perceived impact on the family, current supports and hopes and fears for the future...

BACKGROUND: Course failure arises as the ultimate result of students' declining academic performance in the face of high course demands. It can eventually lead to dropout and academic dissatisfaction. Emotional intelligence may play an essential role in decreasing the emotional effects of stress, such as academic burnout in nursing students. However, emotional intelligence is conceptualized multidimensionally, and each of its attributes may have a different impact on burnout reduction...

This study analyzes air pollution through the effects of China's FDI in 27 European countries over a 20-year period, with a focus on the impact of environmental tax revenues (ETRs) and the environmental context in China. The relationship is estimated through spatial regressions that account for the presence of air pollutants in neighboring countries. The findings suggest that China's FDI in Europe does not contribute to air pollution but rather has a positive impact. The presence of environmental charges filters out non-polluting investments, which has a non-linear relationship with PM2...

By 2030, individuals 65 years of age or older will make up approximately 20% of the world's population1 . Older individuals are at the highest risk for mortality from infections, largely due to the pro-inflammatory, dysfunctional immune response, which is collectively known as immunosenescence2 . During aging, CD8+ T cells acquire an exhausted phenotype, including increased expression of inhibitory receptors, such as programmed cell death 1 (PD1), a decline in effector function and elevated expression of inflammatory factors3-7 ...

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Lusory dysphagia (LD) is a rare disorder resulting from extrinsic vascular compression of the esophagus, is often associated with an aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA). LD is characterized by abnormal development of the right fourth aortic arch during embryonic stages, leading to posterior coursing of the artery in 80 % of cases. Predominantly presenting as dysphagia, LD can occasionally manifest with laryngeal stridor or dyspnea, yet it often remains asymptomatic and incidentally discovered...

This disorder is often associated with haploinsufficiency of the nuclear receptor-binding SET domain protein 1 (NSD1)gene. We investigated four pediatric cases characterized by early-onset overgrowth and developmental delay. The primary objective of this study was to achieve accurate genetic diagnoses...

We investigate the effect of altering the protein expression dynamics of the bHLH transcription factor Her6 at the single-cell level in the embryonic zebrafish telencephalon. Using an homozygote endogenous Her6:Venus reporter and 4D single-cell tracking, we show that Her6 oscillates in neural telencephalic progenitors and that fusion of protein destabilisation domain (PEST) alters its expression dynamics, causing most cells to downregulate Her6 prematurely. However, counterintuitively, oscillatory cells increase with some expressing Her6 at high levels, resulting in increased heterogeneity of Her6 expression in the population...

Previous research often focused on isolated variables, overlooking their interactions, especially in challenging environments. Limb movement direction can be inferred from local field potentials in motor cortex during movement execution. Yet, it remains unclear to what extent intended hand movements can be predicted from brain activity recorded during movement planning. Here, we set out to probe the directional-tuning of oscillatory features during motor planning and execution, using a machine learning framework on multi-site local field potentials (LFPs) in humans. We recorded intracranial EEG data from implanted epilepsy patients as they performed a four-direction delayed center-out motor task...

The present article offers the facial approximation of the mummy of the ancient Egyptian adolescent named Minirdis (ca. 2300 years BP) by means of anatomical analysis of video-images and through a facial approximation protocol implemented on more historical personages. An evaluation of the mummy's endocast is also offered. A potential diagnosis of Sotos syndrome is cautiously considered but its inherent limitations are detailed. Finally, the methodology is presented as a valuable tool both for bio-historical research and for further studies on normal and pathologic morphologies of the cranio-facial district...

Spliced leader trans-splicing of pre-mRNAs is a critical step in the gene expression of many eukaryotes. How the spliced leader RNA and its target transcripts are brought together to form the trans-spliceosome remains an important unanswered question. Using immunoprecipitation followed by protein analysis via mass spectrometry and RIP-Seq, we show that the nematode-specific proteins, SNA-3 and SUT-1, form a complex with a set of enigmatic non-coding RNAs, the SmY RNAs. Our work redefines the SmY snRNP and shows for the first time that it is essential for nematode viability and is involved in spliced leader trans-splicing...
