BACKGROUND: Gallbladder cancer is a rare but aggressive malignancy that is often diagnosed at an advanced stage and is associated with poor outcomes. PURPOSE: To develop a radiomics model to discriminate between benign and malignant gallbladder lesions using enhanced computed tomography (CT) imaging. MATERIAL AND METHODS: All patients had a preoperative contrast-enhanced CT scan, which was independently analyzed by two radiologists. Regions of interest were manually delineated on portal venous phase images, and radiomics features were extracted...

The incidence of gallbladder cancer has been increasing. Radial resection is still the most promising curable treatment for patients with gallbladder cancer. Although the techniques required for laparoscopic radical resection of gallbladder cancer have matured, the number of reports is also on the rise, and laparoscopic radical resection of gallbladder cancer is still controversial. To standardize laparoscopic radical resection of gallbladder cancer, the Biliary Surgery Branch, Chinese Society of Surgery, Chinese Medical Association, together with the Chinese Medical Doctor Association in Chinese Committee of Biliary Surgeons, gathered experts to formulate recommendations and consensus on laparoscopic radical resection of gallbladder cancer...

BACKGROUND: Biliary tract cancer (BTC) often goes undetected until its advanced stages, resulting in a poor prognosis. Given the anatomical closeness of the gallbladder and bile ducts to the pancreas, the inflammatory processes triggered by acute pancreatitis might increase the risk of BTC. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between acute pancreatitis and the risk of BTC. METHODS: Using the Swedish Pancreatitis Cohort (SwePan), we compared the BTC risk in patients with a first-time episode of acute pancreatitis during 1990-2018 to a 1:10 matched pancreatitis-free control group...

OBJECTIVE: Parthenolide (PTL) has a wide range of clinical applications owing to its anti-inflammatory and antitumor effects. To date, the antitumor effect of PTL on gallbladder cancer (GBC) remains largely unknown. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the biological effects of PTL on GBC. METHODS: The cellular viability and proliferation of GBC-SD and NOZ cell lines after treatment with different concentrations of PTL were analyzed using the Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK8)assay and colony formation assay...

Gallbladder cancer (GBC) stands out as one of the most widespread malignancies impacting the biliary tract globally. Despite increasing interest, to the best of our knowledge, no meta-analysis has been undertaken to amalgamate the existing data concerning the prognostic significance of micro-RNAs (miRNAs) in GBC in comparison to studies on miRNAs in other cancers. Hence, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at determining the prognostic significance of miRNAs in GBC patients. Comprehensive literature searches were conducted across PubMed, Cochrane Library, Ovid, Scopus, and Science Direct databases...

High-density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL-C) levels have been associated with cancer. In this observational population-based cohort study using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service system, we investigate the impact of longitudinal changes in HDL-C levels on gastrointestinal cancer risk. Individuals who underwent health examinations in 2010 and 2014 were followed-up through 2021. Among 3.131 million, 40696 gastric, 35707 colorectal, 21309 liver, 11532 pancreatic, 4225 gallbladder, and 7051 biliary cancers are newly detected...

INTRODUCTION: Gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) and cholangiocarcinoma are aggressive forms of cancer developed in the gallbladder and biliary tracts which are related to the liver. This systematic review aimed to highlight the significant association between gallbladder, biliary cancers, and arsenic exposure. METHODS: An extensive search was conducted in Embase, Cochrane, Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science. We included studies that assessed arsenic levels in gallbladder cancer patients, without restrictions on age, sex, or language...

Hepatobiliary cancer (HBC) includes hepatocellular carcinoma and biliary tract carcinoma (cholangiocarcinoma and gallbladder carcinoma), and its morbidity and mortality are significantly correlated with disease stage. Surgery is the cornerstone of curative therapy for early stage of HBC. However, a large proportion of patients with HBC are diagnosed with advanced stage and can only receive systemic treatment. According to the results of clinical trials, the first-line and second-line treatment programs are constantly updated with the improvement of therapeutic effectiveness...

Helicobacter pylori ( H pylori ), a gastric bacterium, has been extensively studied for its association with gastritis, peptic ulcers, and gastric cancer. However, recent evidence suggests its potential implications beyond the stomach, linking it to other gastrointestinal malignancies, such as esophageal cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, gallbladder cancer, and colorectal cancer. In light of the expanding research landscape and the increasing interest in exploring H pylori broader role in gastrointestinal tumorigenesis, this comprehensive review aims to elucidate the relationship between H pylori and gastrointestinal tumors...

Renal cell carcinomas are known for their unforeseeable metastatic pattern. They are known to have high metastatic potential, thus commonly associated with synchronous or metachronous metastatic presentation. At the time of diagnosis, approximately one-third of patients present with metastatic disease. We present a case of synchronous metastasis of clear cell carcinoma to the gallbladder in a 54-year-old male within two months after radical nephrectomy.

AIM: Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is usually diagnosed in advanced stages with poor survival. The molecular mechanisms of GBC still remain unexplored. Several angiogenesis factors play a pivotal role in tumor progression. We aimed to study the expression of VEGF, PDGF-B, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2/neu) and its association with clinicopathological features and survival in GBC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: VEGF, PDGF-B, and HER2/neu expression was studied by immunohistochemistry (IHC) after histological evaluation in 91 GBC cases...

PURPOSE: Majority of the gallbladder cancer (GBC) cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage where chemotherapy alone (or in combination with other treatment methods) is mainly opted as therapeutic approach. However, success or failure of this approach largely depends on the interindividual genetic differences. Careful consideration on the genetic association could assist in the evaluation of patient's treatment response and survival rate. Hence, the present study aims to investigate the survival of patients with GBC and their treatment response to gemcitabine and cisplatin/carboplatin-based chemotherapy in association with Glutathione S-transferase (GSTs) gene polymorphism...

BACKGROUND: Inflammation caused by Opisthorchis viverrini infection increases the risk of cholangitis, cholecystitis, and leads to bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma or CCA). However, only certain infected individuals are susceptible to CCA, suggesting the involvement of host factors in cancer development. In addition, there are reports indicating differences in the locations of CCA. Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is an uncommon condition in which malignant (cancer) cells are detected in gallbladder tissue. Cancer is often triggered when normal cells turn malignant and begin to spread. Cancer can also be caused by genetic anomalies that result in uncontrolled cell proliferation and tumor development. MicroRNAs (also known as miRNAs or miRs) are a group of small, endogenous, non-coding RNAs of 19-23 nucleotides in length, which play a key role in post-transcriptional gene regulation. These miRNAs serve as negative gene regulators by supervising target genes and regulating biological processes, including cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and apoptosis...
