AIM: This study explores the General Practice (GP) experience of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). Much has been written about patient perspectives, yet little is known about the GP perspective at initial diagnosis and management. GDM is increasingly managed in the secondary and tertiary sector, the confidence of GPs and their role in ongoing care has not been examined. Given GDM's poor follow up rates, all aspects of the patient journey warrant close examination. METHODS: Through purposive and snowball sampling, we conducted semi-structured interviews with GPs in Brisbane, Australia between April and October 2018...

Swallowing difficulties are common in older people and can complicate the administration of oral medications. The aim of this study was to explore factors affecting healthcare workers in their practices of oral medication administration to aged care residents with swallowing difficulties. A purposeful sample of 17 healthcare workers composed of clinical/care managers, registered nurses (RNs), enrolled nurses (ENs), and assistants in nursing (AINs) from three aged care facilities in Queensland, Australia participated in semi-structured interviews...

Fruit and vegetable consumption is low compared to recommendations worldwide. Few studies have investigated intakes of fruit and vegetables and barriers to meeting recommendations in a mixed-method design. Moreover, there is a need to better understand differences in these barriers by population subgroups. This study aimed to examine fruit and vegetable intake and barriers to meeting recommendations and differences by sex, age and socioeconomic groups. Data on adults from the cross-sectional Greater Bendigo Active Living Census 2014 were used...

The professional practice of classical music performers has been better understood and enhanced across the last two decades through research aimed at tailoring rehearsing strategies that support the development of a sense of self as an agentic and proactive learner. One approach focuses on helping students make use of various tools that can enhance their learning, particularly in terms of what they do, feel and think when practicing and performing music. This study expands literature on expertise development by embracing the idea that this line of research would benefit from additional studies where the researcher forms part of the research process as an active participant who generates data, especially when these researchers are "members" of the social world they study, and therefore have insider knowledge...

BACKGROUND: Innovative approaches are required to move beyond individual approaches to behaviour change and develop more appropriate insights for the complex challenge of increasing population levels of activity. Recent research has drawn on social practice theory to describe the recursive and relational character of active living but to date most evidence is limited to small-scale qualitative research studies. To 'upscale' insights from individual contexts, we pooled data from five qualitative studies and used machine learning software to explore gendered patterns in the context of active travel...

Codeine is one of the most common opioid medicines for treating pain. Australia introduced policy changes in February 2018 to up-schedule codeine to prescription-only medicine due to concerns of adverse effects, opioid dependency, and overdose-related mortality. This study investigated the frequency and content of messages promoted on Twitter by 4 Australian peak pain organizations, pre- and postpolicy implementation. A time series analysis examined frequency of Twitter posts over a 48-week period. Text analysis via Leximancer examined message content...

BACKGROUND: Cyclones can significantly impact on communities and their healthcare services. Community members with chronic diseases, including opioid dependence, who rely on these healthcare services are placed at an increased risk of treatment disruption during a disaster event. Disruptions to the continuity of the opioid replacement therapy (ORT) service can potentially lead to relapse, withdrawal, and risky behaviours in clients with potential repercussions for the community. OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects of Queensland (QLD) cyclones on opioid treatment programs within Queensland community and hospital pharmacies from three perspectives...

Gamification involves incorporating elements of online games, such as points, leaderboards, and badges into non-game contexts, in order to improve engagement with both employees and consumers. The main point of this paper is, to sum up, what previous authors investigated in the field of Gamification. An analysis of the literature covering 50 papers from 2011 to 2016 was conducted, using Leximancer software, to determine and shape the main themes and concepts proposed in gamification papers. Answering our research question, "What guidelines may provide to future research, the key themes and concepts found in published scientific papers on gamification?", we conclude that the researchers identified eight themes (gamification; game; use; users; business; points; engagement; learning) and twenty-eight related concepts...

Approaches to synthesising qualitative data have, to date, largely focused on integrating the findings from published reports. However, developments in text mining software offer the potential for efficient analysis of large pooled primary qualitative datasets. This case study aimed to: a) provide a step-by-step guide to using one software application, Leximancer; and b) interrogate opportunities and limitations of the software for qualitative data synthesis. We applied Leximancer v4.5 to a pool of five qualitative, UK-based studies on transportation such as walking, cycling and driving, and displayed the findings of the automated content analysis as inter-topic distance maps...

OBJECTIVE: Programmes that reduce the time to defibrillation are likely to improve overall survival rates from out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (OHCAs). This research sought to identify human factors common among community responders taking an automated external defibrillator (AED) to a victim of an OHCA that are either barriers or enablers of desired behaviour. METHODS: A qualitative methodology was used. Community members who had access to an AED and who had been notified of an incident of OHCA near them were approached to participate in the research...

The term "nutritious" is being increasingly used by product manufacturers but the term is not currently regulated as a nutrition claim. It is unclear how lay consumers and experts define and interpret the term or how they evaluate the "nutritiousness" of various foods. To address this evidence gap, a mixed methods design was applied and both nutrition experts ( n = 206) and lay participants ( n = 269) provided definitions of the term "nutritious" and evaluated the "nutritiousness" of 20 different snack foods in a cross-sectional survey...

Caring for obese pregnant women presents challenges for all medical professionals. Despite a lack of supporting evidence, expert opinion and international guidelines suggest early labour epidural insertion for obese women. Anecdotally this is not supported by all anaesthetists. This qualitative study explored the experiences of anaesthetists regarding early epidural analgesia in obese parturients, to answer the research question: Are anaesthetists consistent in how they apply early epidural analgesia in obese parturients?
