Background: Past year, month, and lifetime adolescent e-cigarette use rates remain persistently high, despite falling cigarette use rates. Previous investigations have noted a strong relationship between an individual's positive and negative cognitions related to a behavior, and subsequent initiation of that behavior. Objective: This investigation was conducted to determine the impact positive and negative explicit and implicit cigarette-related cognitions may have on the use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes among at-risk, cigarette-naive adolescents...

The recent introduction of electronic cigarette products containing a synthetic nicotine analog, 6-methyl nicotine (6MN), challenges FDA's tobacco regulatory authority. A similar strategy is pursued by vendors of recently introduced e-cigarette liquids containing nicotinamide (NA), marketed as 'Nixotine' or 'Nixamide'. Compared to nicotine, 6MN is pharmacologically more potent at nicotinic receptors, and more toxic, raising concerns about increased addictiveness and adverse effects. Here, combinations of gas chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry were used to determine nicotine analogs, flavor and sweetener contents of e-cigarette liquids of the brands "SpreeBar" and ECBlend "Nixotine" products...

AIM OF THE STUDY: Liver fibrosis and cigarette smoking seem to be directly linked. Nicotine, as an agonist of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), induces many downstream signaling pathways. The pathways through which nicotine affects the process of liver fibrosis have not been clarified. The present study aimed to investigate the nicotine-induced effects on fibrosis progression in cholestatic rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS: First, the Wistar rats were subjected to sham or bile duct ligation (BDL) surgery...

INTRODUCTION: Amidst the escalating trend of electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use and dual smoking habits among youth, understanding their potential impact on psychological well-being is imperative. Limited research has explored this relationship, particularly among youth in settings where e-cigarettes are banned. This study investigates the relationship between current e-cigarette and traditional cigarette use patterns and the presence of depression and anxiety symptoms among youth in Thailand...

BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) play important roles in tissue homeostasis by providing a supportive microenvironmental niche for the hematopoietic system. Cigarette smoking induces systemic abnormalities, including an impeded recovery process after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. However, the role of cigarette smoking-mediated alterations in MSC niche function have not been investigated. METHODS: In the present study, we investigated whether exposure to cigarette smoking extract (CSE) disrupts the hematopoietic niche function of MSCs, and pathways impacted...

On 2 May 2023, the Australian Federal Government announced a suite of reforms aimed at ensuring the effectiveness of the prescription model of regulation of vaping (or e-cigarette) products in Australia. These reforms are intended to protect Australians, particularly young people, from the harms of vaping and nicotine dependence. The ensuing public debate on the issue has often created the impression that the options under consideration are to either retain 'recently introduced' prescription regulation or to 'revert to' a retail supply approach...

The surge in electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) usage, particularly among young adults, poses significant public health concerns. This study aimed to identify predictors of e-cigarette use, quit attempts, and frequency among undergraduate students in a Hispanic-serving university in Texas. A cross-sectional study was conducted between August 1 and October 26, 2023, recruiting undergraduate students through the Sona system, an online experiment management platform. Participants completed an online survey that covered demographics, educational status, vaping status, initiation age, reasons for first and current e-cigarette use, frequency of past usage, intentions to quit, and quit attempt frequency...

INTRODUCTION: Cigarettes containing nicotine (Nic) are a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. We reported that Nic delivered via injections or e-cigarette vapor led to hepatic steatosis in mice fed with a high-fat diet. High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is the main sweetener in sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) in the US. Increased consumption of SSBs with HFCS is associated with increased risks of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Nicotinamide riboside (NR) increases mitochondrial nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+ ) and protects mice against hepatic steatosis...

BACKGROUND: Article 14 of the WHO 'Framework Convention on Tobacco Control' recommends, that all oral healthcare providers provide support for tobacco cessation, to all patients. Despite evidence on the effectiveness of tobacco cessation interventions in dental settings, implementation remains low in most high-burden countries like Pakistan. A pragmatic pilot trial of a dentist-delivered behavioural support intervention for smokeless tobacco (ST) cessation, was conducted in dental hospitals in Pakistan...

BACKGROUND: With high rates of both e-cigarette and social media use among adolescents and young adults (AYAs), social media influencers who promote e-cigarettes are particularly concerning but are understudied. We examined the association between AYAs' use of 11 different social media platforms (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube) and exposure to social media e-cigarette influencers. OBJECTIVES: From November 2022 to February 2023, we conducted an online, US national survey of AYAs (14-29 years) who endorsed past-30-day e-cigarette use...

METHODS: We analysed data from participants aged 10-25 years in the UK Household Longitudinal Study 2015-2021. The amount of social media use reported on a normal weekday was related to current cigarette smoking and e-cigarette use. Generalised estimating equation (GEE) logistic regression models investigated associations of social media use with cigarette smoking and e-cigarette use...

INTRODUCTION: Promoting smoking cessation is a global public health priority. E-cigarettes are increasingly being used by individuals to try quitting smoking. Identifying sources and types of information available to adults who are trying to quit, and the impact of this information during a quit attempt, is critical to augment the potential public health benefit of e-cigarettes for reducing cigarette smoking. METHODS: US adults (N = 857) who reported using e-cigarettes in a recent smoking cessation attempt completed an anonymous, cross sectional, online survey...

BACKGROUND: E-cigarette promotional posts with misleading nicotine warning labels on social media may lower adolescents' risk perceptions of e-cigarettes. A between-subject experiment assessed effects of influencers' e-cigarette promotional posts with different nicotine warning labels on adolescents' e-cigarette harm perceptions, susceptibility to e-cigarette use and perceptions of influencer credibility. METHODS: In 2022, adolescents (N=1864, Mage =17 (SD=0.6)) were randomised to view six images and videos featuring influencers promoting e-cigarettes in one of five experimental conditions: two conditions with a 'tobacco-free nicotine' warning label (placed on an e-cigarette in the post or at the top of the post), two conditions with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) nicotine warning label (on an e-cigarette in the post or at the top of the post (control)) and one no-label condition...

Pain is a prevalent symptom among cancer patients and survivors. Psychoactive substance use (PSU) is associated with both the presence and severity of pain. However, little is known about this association in the context of cancer. The primary objective was to compare the prevalence of PSU and its relationship with pain during and after cancer. PSU was defined as the use of nonmedication substances (alcohol, tobacco, e-cigarettes, cannabidiol, and cannabis), with frequency categorized as at least yearly, monthly, weekly, or daily...
