BACKGROUND: Resolvins are endogenous mediators of the resolution of inflammation. They are derived from omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid precursors. Resolvin D1 (RvD1) and Resolvin E1 (RvE1) are the best-characterized members for actively promoting periodontal regeneration in experimental animal models. Here, we evaluated the efficacy of RvD1 and RvE1 on cementoblasts, the key cells involved in dental cementum regeneration and the attachment of the tooth to the alveolar bone. METHODS: Immortalized mouse cementoblasts (OCCM-30) were treated with different concentrations (0...

Radioiodine treatment is a fundamental therapy for patients with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). Sodium/iodide symporter (NIS)-mediated iodine uptake is a prerequisite for the efficacy of radioiodine therapy. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pro-tumor cytokine, but its regulation of NIS expression in PTC has not been elucidated. In this study, we found that IL-6 enhanced the proliferation ability of PTC cells. Moreover, the negative association between IL-6 and NIS expression in thyroid cancer tissues was demonstrated...

This study investigated the synergistic protective effects of melatonin (MEL) and ascorbic acid (vitamin C, ASA) in treating sepsis-induced lung injury in rats. Rats were divided into five groups: control, cecal ligation and puncture (CLP), CLP + MEL, CLP + ASA and CLP + MEL + ASA. The effects of MEL (10 mg/kg), ASA (100 mg/kg) and their combination on oxidative stress, inflammation and histopathology were evaluated in septic rats' lung tissues...

Oxidative stress is closely associated with diabetes and can cause free radical accumulation and eventually lead to ocular surface tissue damage. The purpose of this study was to investigate peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ) expression in the lacrimal gland (LG), meibomian gland, and cornea of diabetes-related dry eye mice and whether the PPARγ agonist rosiglitazone can alleviate the oxidative stress of the ocular surface, thereby improving the condition of diabetes-related dry eye...

Acrylamide (ACR) is formed during heat treatment of foodstuffs and ACR may serve as a probable malignant neoplastic disease agent in all organs and tissues of the human body. However, it is unknown if ACR is associated with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) pathogenesis. Cell viability and proliferation were determined using CCK-8 assay and EdU staining. Flow cytometry was used to determine cell death and cell cycle arrest. Intracellular lipid reactive oxygen species, Fe2+ and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) were analyzed using a C11-BODIPY581/591 fluorescent probe, FerroOrange staining and a JC-1 MMP Assay kit, respectively...

The use of arsenic in arsenic-based pesticides has been common in many countries in the past and today. There is considerable evidence linking arsenic exposure to hepatotoxicity and diabetes. Destructive phenomena such as hepatic oxidative stress and inflammation can interfere with glucose uptake and insulin function. In the present study, the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and molecular mechanism of citicoline against sodium arsenite-induced hepatotoxicity and glucose intolerance were investigated in mice...

Therefore, it is very promising for nutraceutical and the functional food industry applications. Three groups of Nile tilapia (forty-five fish/group) were fed on basal diets or diets containing 5% (N5) or 10% (N10) of the microalga N. oculata for seven weeks. The clinical therapeutics of cervical cancer is limited due to the drug resistance and metastasis of tumor. As a novel target for antitumor therapy, ferroptosis is deemed to be more susceptible for those cancer cells with resistance to apoptosis and chemotherapy. Dihydroartemisinin (DHA), the primary active metabolites of artemisinin and its derivatives, has exhibited a variety of anticancer properties with low toxicity. However, the role of DHA and ferroptosis in cervical cancer remained unclear. Here, we showed that DHA could time-dependently and dose-dependently inhibit the proliferation of cervical cancer cells, which could be alleviated by the inhibitors of ferroptosis rather than apoptosis...

Oxidative stress, which causes excessive production of reactive oxygen species, is generally thought to increase during exercise and is an indicator of fatigue. The current study assesses the protective effect of royal jelly (RJ) and Chlorella vulgaris (CV) on the genotoxicity and hepatic injury induced by GA3 in rats. Daily oral administration of 55 mg/kg GA3 to rats for 6 constitutive weeks induced biochemical and histopathological changes in the liver via oxidative stress and inflammation. Co-administration of 300 mg/kg RJ or 500 mg/kg CV with GA3 considerably ameliorated the serum levels of AST (aspartate aminotransferase), ALT (alanine aminotransferase), ALP (alkaline phosphatase), γGT (gamma-glutamyl transferase), total bilirubin, and albumin...

Objective: Hydroxytyrosol (HT) is a polyphenol with a wide range of biological activities. Excessive drinking can lead to oxidative stress and inflammation in the liver, which usually develop into alcohol liver disease (ALD). At present, there is no specific drug to treat ALD. In this paper, the protection effect of HT on ALD and the underline mechanism were studied. Methods: HepG2 cells were exposed to ethanol in vitro and C57BL/6J mice were fed with a Lieber-DeCarli ethanol liquid diet in vivo . Results: triglyceride (TG) level in serum and the expression of fatty acid synthase (FASN) were reduced significantly by the treatment with HT The acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activity was increased, the serum level of malondialdehyde (MDA) was decreased, catalase (CAT) and glutathione (GSH) were increased, suggesting that HT may reduce its oxidative damage to the body by promoting alcohol metabolism...

Chronic elevated free fatty acids (FFAs) impair pancreatic β cells, but the mechanisms remain elusive. In this study, palmitic acid (PA) impaired viability and glucose-stimulated insulin secretion of INS-1 cells. Microarray analysis showed that PA markedly altered the expression of 277 probe sets of genes with 232 upregulated and 45 downregulated (fold change ≥ 2.0 or ≤ -2.0; P < 0.05). Gene Ontology analysis displayed a series of the biological process of the differentially expressed genes, such as intrinsic apoptotic signaling pathway in response to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and oxidative stress, inflammatory response, positive regulation of macroautophagy, regulation of insulin secretion, cell proliferation and cycle, fatty acid metabolic process, glucose metabolic process and so on...
